Thread: swing arm bearings

    How often do these need to be replaced? Could this have caused my recent bearing ruining my aluminum rim? Or is the swing arm tweeked? How to check that beats me.

    it almost takes a jig to be able to check the swing arm for being tweaked. It can be done with gages or ground precision rods in a GDT table if you have the prints with the dimensions. I wouldn't think that it would be easy to tweak or twist the swing arms on these bikes, it's pretty rugged. I think that if it was me I would send an email to EBR asking for help in diagnosing your rear wheel bearing issue. It may be something they are familiar with.

    As long as your axle bolt is straight... just threading it in by hand without wheel would be good enough for me. If it spins in all the way easy and smooth that should be good enough and rule out a bent swing arm without crazy, difficult measurements.

    You have a few threads going about this, and been offered good advise. But you left out lots of things, then dropped in a low side. The second wheel you bought used... did you change the bearing? Did it press in tight? Or did you just install the wheel with old bearings?

    Your first wheel bearing issue, did you buy the bike new? Or was there a PO for that as well? What bearing is it? One or both?

    I'm just asking to help with diagnosis. This whole thing is weird.

    is the swing arm tweeked? How to check that beats me.
    go to pulley side of swingarm. with bike sitting close to vertical on level ground....remove the swingarm bridge. can you easily remove and replace it? if so nothing is bent.

    1. Bought bike around 25k miles used. A little rash on ignition cover. None on the pod. Maybe a new one was installed. Bike rode well. No strange wear patterns on tire. No noises. Even had bike up for valves and pulled the rear wheel off and all was well.
    2. Rode bike for a few k. Then one day I heard a popping from the rear. Pulley side bearing wore out wheel.
    3.Bought used wheel. Pulled bearings. Installed new ones. As well as a new spacer. Thermal methods. All Balls.
    4.Rode bike a few k again. I had a low slide one afternoon. Left side pod got a little scuffed but we dusted ourselves off and rode on to put a few k more until...
    5.I heard the pop again. No unusual wear on tire.
