Hi, I'm new to Buells as I just got my first one July 11, 2008.  So far I love it!

I've read most of the posts here and haven't seen this one come up.

Does anyone else wonder why there is such a small hole in the airbox cover on the 2008s?  Since they got rid of the snorkel thru the frame, the only place where air can get into the airbox is thru the small opening behind the fuel cap.  And if you look close, most of it is blocked by the internal airbox. Has anyone tried to open this up or make any additional holes to get air in?

Hey they did that in 07' take out the metal mesh thing if you like and there are custom airboxes out there. You could just get creative and put more holes in your airbox yourself. I'd recommend buying a stock replacement first though, if you butcher one you still have the other.

There are alot of post about air box mods on here (ALOT). Lefox will probably get you a link he is good about knowing were everything is on here. open up your inner air box top by cutting holes in it.
Here is a Pic of mine.

I have read the threads on modifying the inner airbox. The 08s seem to have plenty of holes already in the inner cover. But I'm concerned about the outer cover. The only inlet I see is behind the gas cap. This hole is dressed up by the metal mesh. And if you look thru it, most of the hole is blocked by the inner cover. It doesn't make sense to cut more holes in the inner cover if the outer cover is the restriction.

you could go for a airbox delete, which is on here several times, which will resolve the obstruction infront of the mesh.
found here and here

you can also get other type of airbox covers like  this or this

Or you can cut the front of your inner air box. then it will match the hole that is in your out cover.

Just because the out cover is on the air box doesn't mean air isn't getting in there.  There is still plenty of air getting in that air box.  I drilled about 150 holes in my stock air box cover not the one painted with the Buell logo's but the inner one and it made a difference.

I put mine out side and that made a huge difference.

I noticed that Firechicken it just looks out of place to me with a air filter outside the bike like that.  It is probably incredible for incoming air just not my cup of tea.

Some dont like it but it is crazy the pull it has all the way to red in 5th gear. HOLD ON  Motors are big pumps, pumps air in and then out, the more air in and out(with more fuel) means more power.

Besides big bugs/rain. What would be the adverse effects of just running the airbox delete kit and not putting the outer airbox cover back on the outside..I know they make a rain sock thingy for the k&n air filter. That would fix the rain problem... Any ideas?

I think that looks awesome Fire, did u make that yourself or was it a kit u purchased?

No kit all hand built. I'm trying to get pics on here. You biggest think is I had to add a lot of fuel on the top end. Thanks Thaloc

The outer airbox can't be restrictive. It's not sealed to the frame so there is an air gap all the way around it plus the grille in the front. As stated earlier there is plenty of air getting in there. I would cut the front of the inner though so you can't see it. You'll just see the filter then, that looks cool and may let cooler air in? I have an '06 and cut holes in my inner in a manner so it looks factory but is almost totally open, I'll have to post pics of it sometime
