hello i am new to buells. just got a new xb12r. i have been reading this forum for quite a long time now and have been wondering something. i am a gm technician and went to college for automotive. i have been reading alot about installing aftermarket parts like pipes and filters and such. you guys always talk about them running too lean when you do such things. i am confused because these bikes use a oxygen sensor to watch fuel ratio. and doing so they should be able to pick up on a lean/rich condition and adjusting the ratio accordingly. i dont understand with this technology why you have to remap the ecu to adjust for such upgrades when the ecu already has the info to keep up???

Bikes and cars may us the same style of technology, but its not apples to apples.  The motorcycle companies design the fuel injection systems to very tight parameters so you have to re-program the stock ECM or get some sort of upgrade to allow for modifications.

(I'm a certified auto mechanic, too  and it makes to sense to me either)

yay, another freakin' mekanik up in here. Which is good for now because it makes it easier for me to get an answer to stupid questions.

Well, there’s still a difference between an air- and watercooled engine.
the sensor can only adjust within set parameters/fuelmaps which are based on original setup (I’m actually guessing this is the same in the automotive section? => chiptuning?)
a car also has a lambda sensor to check AF ratio after burn and adjust accordingly (?)

Not entirely true, V-Rods and my CBR600RR are the same way.  They program very time fuel and ignition parameters into even the water cooled bikes.  Bike have all the main sensors as most cars do.

didnt 2008 models ecu update its self to engine conditions. i thought that that was one of the differences made to the 08 ecu??  also a lambda sensor does the same purpose as a regular oxygen sensor, it just gives it in a difference scale. in lamba 1 is the same as 14.7:1 just like 500mv is with old style o2 sensors

yes, they did change the ECM and system a bit, but its was mainly for the new pickup sensor, and one piece throttle body set up that doesnt need the traditional style TPS reset.

If you are looking to have it remapped I understand that they can do that for the '08 bikes at Americansportbikes.com. I hear you can send your ecm to them and they will do the nessesary changes and send it back. Something worth looking into if exhaust and air intake mods lay in your future. Worth calling them about anyhow, they can explain it all.

my point exactly...vrods are also watercooled, no?
aircooled engines, like the evo, have more variables like for instance, to engine temp. air gets warm & dense, which an o² sensor does not measure, but a lambda sensor does.

Well, air and water cooled engines both have MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensors, head temp sensors, and TPS (throttle position)sensors which read that kind of stuff.

I'm not sure what you're calling a lambda sensor.  Never heard of that reference before.

lambda or air/fuel ratio sensor is placed in the exhaust pipe just before the catalytic convertor to check if the how the actual af ratio was.

this because a catalytic convertor can only do what it needs to when the air/fuel ratio is exactly 14.7.
