I used a the new lid I bought and kinda modified the kit to make it easier to service once it is installed. Here is a full install.....
Stuff needed
New open style airbox lid (bought or can be made from metal or thick plastic)
Section of 5/16 threaded rod
One 5/16 wing nuts
One 5/16 Nylock nut
Two 5/16 fender washers
One zip tie
(XB12 guys will need 3 10-32x1 3/4 with 3 nylock nuts and washers to mount the interactive exhaust stepper motor to the new air box delete lid if you are retaining the stock exhaust)
Tools
5/16 drill bit
#10 drill bit (XB12 install)
T27 Torx
Sharpie
Remove the seat, colored intake cover, and the stock airbox lid, and toss the stock airbox lid onto pile of stock parts left over from other mods XB12 guys, remove the 3 screws on the stepper motor on the airbox and remove the motor from the airbox lid and let it hang off to the side for now, we'll get back to that. Next, mark a hole centered just in front of the air temp sensor hump, where the threaded rod will go through. Next, Dont fully remove the air box base, but loosen it enough to make sure where you are drilling will not damage or interfere with anything. Drill a 5/16 hole at your mark, making sure not to damage any other components while doing so. Put the threaded rod through the hole you just drilled towards the bottom and put one fender washer and one nylock nut on the bottom of the air box base and thread on the nut about 1/4 of an inch onto the threaded rod. I just use a zip tie on the top of the air box base at the base of the threaded rod you just put through to hold the threaded rod from falling back through. Re-install the air box base. Next, set the filter back on the air box base to be able to know where the lid is going to sit. Now some companies if you buy an airbox delete off the internet already have a hole drilled in the new lid, so their hole placement my be different, but this is just the best way I have found to do this if you are making one yourself or where you bought it didnt pre drill a hole in the new lid. Now get down eye level with the top of the filter and hold the threaded rod directly straight up and down and make a mark on the rod with the sharpie about 3/4 of an inch above the filter. Next, thread the wing nut onto the threaded rod past the mark you just made (this is so you can chase the threads back once you cut the excess rod off from above the filter) Now, cut the rod at teh mark you just made to remove the excess length that isnt needed. Make your cut as clean as possible so that it is easier to thread the wing nut back onto the rod once you make the cut. Remove the wing nut and install the new air box delete lid onto the threaded rod then install the fender washer and wing nut. XB9 guys and XB12 guys not retaining the stock exhuast, you are done, go tear it up out there. XB12 guys keeping the stock exhuast with the stepper motor, you have a few more steps. Next, set the stepper motor back onto the new lid in a position as close to factory position where it was on the stock lid as you can. Make sure the wiring and cable have proper slack in them and where you routed them doesnt rest anywhere it could get damaged. Use the hole on the motor to mark where to drill the new mounting holes. Remove the air box delete lid and use the #10 drill bit to drill the 3 holes you just marked for the stepper motor. Next, use the longer 10-32 bolts you aquired from a local hardware store with the nylock nuts and washers to fasten the stepper motor to the air box delete lid. Last, re-install the new lid, seat, and the colored intake cover and go out and ride...
If anybody has an revisions or things they would like to add to this from their experiences, feel free to add them.

when you install the air box delete do you need to also install the fuel breather line, or is that optional

Just tie it where ever you want. Nd while your at it you might as well do the exhaust gas tube mod too.

Does anyone know if performing this airbox delete will cause me to fail emissions test for Texas? I just moved here and havnt had my inspection yet and it would be good to know ahead of time. Thanks

Shouldn't do as long as you dont do the breather hose re-route till after your emissions test

Hey no problem. The Air Box Delete just increases airflow, it shouldnt affect the emissions. The breather hose re-route is actually taking un burned fumes and re-cycling them back through the engine. If any mod will cause you to fail your emissions...then the hose re route will probably do it.
How often do you have to get tested anyways? Is it a one time thing, or something done yearly?

From what I have been told you have to get it done every year, so if I end up doing the re-route I will more than likely have to change it back before I get it tested, but it's only once a year so the extra hassle will still be worth it.

Ok, so I found out today when I went in for my inspection that they dont even do emissions tests. It was only an inspection to see that everything on the bike/vehicle is running correctly. So as soon as I get a free weekend, I will definatly be doing the airbox delete w/ hose re-route. Thank god for no emissions tests!

why would you have to re route the breather hoses. they only come up inside the filter. if you have an air box lid cover over only the filter, it shouldnt matter right?

im trying to do this airbox delete by cutting the filter cover off the airbox lid. i dont see a need to re route the hoses when essentially there is no difference in the airbox but more air flow

Its not the factor of air flow when you re-route the breather houses to outside of the airbox. You are taking the crankcase vapors out of the induction and venting them to the air outside. It helps with throttle response and those hiccups some people get while taking off from a stoplight when the engine is warm.

is there anything i should do after installing the airbox delete, maybe get the bike tuned? i guess im asking if it was the cold that caused the rough idle or the airbox delete.

Just take it out on a ride where you can hold it between 3500-4500 rpm for 5 mins. That will reset the learned map in the ECM and it will set to the airbox mod you just did. You still might want to consider having the TPS reset though. Not a bad idea.

what about the colored plastic cover, the one that goes over the airbox lid. if i have the old one, without the holes near the gas cap, do i have to change it to perform this mod?
