Thinking about wrapping my headers, and had a couple questions. I went looking threw some old threads but couldnt find it all. Im thinking about getting the kit from DEI(design engeneering inc). Would there kit have enough wrap? How much wrap will I need to cover my headers? Is there another brand that you guys recomend besides from there? Or would I be ok going to the parts store and getting the wrap?

Thanks.

I usedthe 2" wide stuff and used almost 25' when I did mine, I soaked mine in water so it would stretch nice and tight. Did it last winter and it still fits nice and tight.

I used the black stuff, I think it is DEI, I got mine from ASB.

Here it is on my old bike as I never transfered the header to my new bike so it is just sitting in my garage for now.

cool, thanks man. the kit has 30', and it comes with the silicone spray and steel ties for 65 bucks. So I think I may end up just getting that.

Sounds good.

Big thing in making it look as good as possible is to take the header completly off, wrap the front/left side from the top down to the middle of the "Y" first and then wrap the rear/right side front the top down.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing, you got a link for where you found this kit?  Also...
Xtreme: Just want to be clear on how you did yours.  You wrapped the header that leads to the back cylinder first from the top down untill the crotch, then wrapped the front header fron the top down all the way, right?  Thanks.

Nope

wrap from the top down wrap the front cylinder down to the crotch and then the rear cylinder down to the bottom of the header.

This way from the side it appears as the header is wrapped with one piece as you can see the entire side rather than the front cylinder too.

I wrapped mine about 3yrs ago. Held up till the front started freying this summer and I just rewrapped that one. Like xtreme said get em wet first and you'll get a tighter fit. Another thing I didn't really think of but recently read in a mag is the more you over lap, the more efficant they will be. Just take your time and it's pretty cut and dry.   One last thing, mock it up first a few different ways to see what looks best. You'll be happy as heck   Bike runs cooler, and I swear mine sounded different after. A little low tone.   Happy trails

Xtreme- That looks clean as hell! I gotta do mine now definitely. Is there a noticeable drop in leg temp?

i plan on wraping my headers tonight... was wonder if i should buy that silicone spray they say to use  before you put it on  doesjust soaking it in water works just fine? i picked up a 51 foot roll from ebay for 9.99 plus 10 dollars shipping

My understanding was that the silicone spray goes on afterwards as a sealer.  The water just helps stretch and tighten your initial wrap.

should have looked into this a little better before i started did not know you had to pretty much pull out the motor to get the headers all the way out so i got them most of the way with out "rotating" the motor and im going to do it on the bike see how it turns out worse comes to worse buy another roll off e-bay and do it the right way with a lot more time on my hands like in the WINTER!!!

Did mine last week. Definitely took longer than I was anticipating.
I found the very bottom of the twin pipe to be the hardest where it slopes back into one.

I am thinking about wrapping mine, is it possible to do it with the headers on the bike?
Posted:  17 Jul 2010 02:13 [?]
yes, just time, water and patience......

You can do it with the headers on the bike, thats how i did mine and it turned out fine. just take your time and make sure to pull it tight and keep just about a 1/4 inch overlap all the way threw and youll be fine. check out that link that i posted twards the top of the page, that stuff worked really well. it already had a line stiched in it for the correct overlay and all. i ended up ordering it from summit for around 50 bucks and had it within 2 days.
