I'm thinking of replacing the 2nd gear set in my XB due to P.O. shenanigans. (Probably thought he was speed shifting or something). Can someone suggest a source? Also does the primary case take a gasket or is it silicone? I have not yet take it a part and probably won't till I have all the parts.

They usually have some of the cheapest prices. However, some of the roller bearings, spacers and clips you'll have to order from your local HD dealer.
The cases use a silicon sealant. I used permatex grey. Do a google search on motorcycle engine case sealants or something and decide what you think will work best. So far I've had not issues with the permatex.
I'm sure others will chime in and give you other tips.
One lesson I learned while splitting my cases and rebuilding the transmission on my 07 xb12r is that you REALLY need a GOOD set of snap ring pliers. It made a world of a difference. I learned the hard way that having the right tool for the job REALLY makes things easier!

Gotta ask a dumb question now. I thought I could just pull the primary and slide the trans out that side, but after much review that looks like my imagination working overtime. I just thought I had read that somewhere. ( bike is an '05 XB-9). If the cases need to be split, I don't need to fix it that bad! I can wait for something else to go wrong and shift slow into second.

Also it looks like there is no adjustment for the shift drum/mechanism either; if someone could confirm that?

It does shift slightly better with new oil in the primary and the shift lever adjusted down a bit. The clutch is also adjusted. So I'm guessing there is no easy way out on this one.
