I have a 2007 XB9r and I have no electrical power whatsoever. The speedometer and tachometer sometimes reset, but other than that nothing happens. I have tested the battery. 12.8 V All fuses are good.

I used to be able to turn the key and the lights would turn on, but when I hit the start button it would die, as in all electrical power would be lost. The problem progressed to where it is described above.

I thought the problem at first was a bad relay, but I replaced them and it still had no effect.

The problem started when I turned off the bike and the fan turned on to cool off the engine. I flipped the red kill switch to on and the fan stopped. I flipped it to off and the fan started. I flipped it to on again, and the fan started and quite quickly. I am thinking that maybe this flipping may have fried some electrical component, but I am not sure where to begin to look. If anyone has had this problem or any suggestions I would appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance.

not sure the purpose of all this red run switch flipping you're describing.....but for starters do the simple under-seat things first if you haven't: battery terminals and cable connections must be pristine. then trace your negative cable over to it's attachment point. remove the torx screw.....look....scrape....clean...reattach. then trace your positive cable down to it's connection at starter and do the same. remove fuse box cover again and check the fuse/diode with the arrow on it. be sure arrow facing correct direction as per logo under box cover. report back.

Great advice, as usual, from lunatic. I'd also suggest checking the kill switch. Open up the switch housing and check for corrosion, frayed or disconnect wire... ...anything that looks out of the ordinary.

On the R the negative cable mounts to the subframe/battery tray. They catch fire because of how close the hot terminal is to the subframe. That's what I've figured out from fire damaged ones.

    Anyway,
I suggest an attempt at jump starting the bike with a car at idle or a jump box.

There is a main fuse under the seat on R model, might check that. The dash is lower right fuse I believe in the fuse box sitting on bike so check that. The ignition switch could be bad also.

Without being there in person we can only suggest things to check.

I've had bad fuses which appear good before.

Sounds to me like your battery is dead. I've had a couple now that show 12+ volts but don't have enough life left in them to turn the engine over. My last battery gave all the symptoms you described when it went out (right down to he lights not working), including reading 12.8v at rest.

As far as the fan and the kill switch, that's normal. Shut bike off, fan engages... Turn switch back on and fan shuts off to preserve battery power for starting. There's nothing wrong there, and it's unlikely you damaged anything.

A jump start will tell you if the battery is shot. If you're using a car to jump it, leave the car off. Idling the car could overwhelm the bike after it starts.

    I will try that.
In the mean time I was taking it apart and seeing other things to fix.
