I have tried every concievable angle to get this thing to connect to ecm spy and I get nothing but "failed to get com port! I'm about ready to start throwing things!
    My setup:
    Bike: 2005 XB12R-stock ECM
    Computer: laptop running windows 8
    ECMSPY version: 1.12.26

It took me forever and a day to get windows 8 to use the driver I needed (it kept wanting to "help" me by picking a driver for me that didn't work) but I finally got that ironed out. the computer recognizes the cable and I have no errors.
I have continuity on all wires on the cable itself.
It plugs firmly into the bike
Im sure I'm forgetting about 100 things I've gone though but I'm just so flustered right now I can hardly see straight. I've literally been trying to get this to work for a couple of months now off and on)!
I could really use some insight or advice here before I go ballistic on something!

At least one case where ECMSpy will give that message is when you use "autodetect" on the COM port, in which case ECMSpy attempts to query the ECM but receives no reply and then times out.

What is the status at the bottom? Does it say "COM: Transmission timed out!" ? And what is the message/status in the bottom left-side area? Does it say "COM: 0 Error".

How are you selecting the comm port number to use? Have you accessed a dialog that has a selection of com port numbers to choose from? I am using Win 8.1, too. Not that familiar with it, and also I have Bluetooth dongle instead of a cable. But I had to go into the Bluetooth setup to select a comm port number. Prior to explicitly selecting a comm port number, I was getting an error similar to yours.

I know I've gotten the 'timed out' error. I can't say I've really paid attention to whether the "COM:0 Error" has popped up.

I have tried selecting the port as well as letting it find it itself. Both methods ended in failure (repeatedly).

How would I go about testing the cable itself (other than a basic continuity test)?
I have removed the outer casing from the USB end and tested wire continuity from the soldered connection in the USB side to the ECM side connector and all was good. How do I determine if that little circuit board inside the USB end is OK? Really, that about the only thing left I can think of. :(

if the cable is messed up it would be the end that plugs in to the bike most likely. you can pull it apart but be careful, I pulled mine apart and soldered the wires in the pins because the wires came out of the pins and could not get com. I have a second cable and that is how I found out the other one was bad because it connected right away so I pulled it apart and fixed it. Mite not be your problem worth a look.

Just copied the entire file onto CDR, 10 files total on the disc with drivers included...you should be able to load it to your laptop/desktop and good to go...pm me your address and I'll mail it to you on Tuesday.
