i know this has been posted before but i am having trouble finding it.  i just bought a left over 06 firebolt xb12.  it's my first buell, i have been riding harleys for years.  i would like to put an aftermarket pipe on it.  i'll admit mostly for sound, the bike has enough go.  my question is how many miles should the bike be broken in for before putting a pipe on?  it only has 250 miles so far.  also i HAVE to replace the ecm?  also i am looking for input on different pipes.

thanks for your help.  sorry that these questions have prob been asked 1000s of times

My gathering is that you DO need to enhance your EFI, remapping is best, next best is the buell race ecm, and last is an "in-between" box such as the dobeck techlusion or power commander.  Your bike's AF ratio will be off otherwise, resulting in possible engine damage and/or loss of power.

I don't know about waiting...I got my bike with 5200 miles on it, so it was well broken in.

I have the Jardine pipe on my 9R...not much noticable power difference, but the sound is great....loud and raw.  Above all, you'll get what you pay for...a Jardine is a decent pipe, but it gives little power gain, and has to be maintained every 5K miles or so...but it's cheap.  You could go for a D&D or micron...both expensive, but have good sound and power.  One thing you can look at is Americansportbike.com, they have a "XB exhaust shootout," which compares pretty much all exhaust on the market today on a XB9 and XB12, complete with photos, dyno readouts, and sound files.  It's worth a peek.

nah, wait till you can have your ecm remapped...you'll be surprized of the low-end power gain

Sorry, LeFox, I was speaking of my experience so far with the Jardine and no ECM modification.  I'm still waiting on that.  I know there will be gain when I put the ECM with it.  I apoligize for the error in clarity.

i know what you ment scobbie001

i'm just pointing out that when you are able to remap your ecm, you'll be pleasantly surprized with  your jardine.

I'm still in search of someone who can do that...but so far I can't find anyone within 300 miles that has the equipment to do so.  I guess I'm going to have to settle with the race ECM until then.
