Sounds like a rod to me. Check exhaust to make sure it's all tight first
My bike is making a knocking sound and I was hoping someone can point me in the direction as to what it is, I was thinking maybe the timing is off or the plugs are bad. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Link to video http://youtu.be/Mc6yAOSbEro

Time for a new crank and rods.... Throw a magnet in the oil bag and I bet you'll find some silver fish.... Or drain the oil.
How many miles? Seen a few 07 xb9 fail now. Another went around 30k & 40k but I've seen xb9 way over 100k.
My 08 had 29k (running fine) last time I did maintenance for the current owner.
PS I have a good xb12 crank, ECM & intake if you want to convert to xb12 :)
Let me know. It will be cheaper than new one or buying a used motor
Sounds like my 08 XB12scg that had a rod bearing failure. I had to replace everything and I'm still putting it back together. Bearing race metal is like a sand blaster to the internals. I got a nib crank assy from surdyke for $536. new cams, lifters, pistons & barrels, oil pump internals, ect... the rebuild is over $2k... If you do rebuild, it will be a new engine. Just inspect everything when its apart and I recommend not starting it anymore because every second that engine is running it's nuking more parts. Good luck man...
Damn lots of 07 xb9's are starting to have crank failures. This is really sad. Too bad there wasn't a recall of something.
I've been wanting a stt bad but all I see are 07's for sale and the whole crank failure thing makes me stay away.
Good luck man.... If it were me I'd try and grab a 06 or older engine and swap it in. If you get a 04-05 engine swap out the oil pump gear while the engine is out. I'd assume you could get a engine for around a grand.
Oh and please add your Vin to the crank failure thread on badweb.
if it helps i have a complete good running xb9 engine sitting here waiting for someone to buy it....
I'm weighting my options as far as what to do with the bike, any opinions on how much i could get selling the bike as is? I also have a question why wasn't there ever a recall from this problem?
because not enough of them fail.
i think the 12's were more prone to failure.
i had one but it was even more rare....crank was fine, but pinion shaft bearing started falling apart and tore up the outer race. i had .005" runout on pinion side and .004" on stator side.
bearing rollers. my guess is either a sh1tty part, incorrect original tolerance, or the runout finally caught up to it..
heres the race:
i have only seen one other documented case like this and it was from Twin.
Superbikes of Dallas, Tx, has an XB9 engine sitting on a pallet with only 2k Miles on it. The mechanic said it ran before he removed it. He also did say that he was going to put it in a chopper, but he was thinking of selling for $1500.
