Ok so here is my problem and first proper post on here, i took my bike (2009 XB9SX) to a Buell/Harley Dealer to be serviced today, They tell me the bike stopped running on the work stand whilst it was linked up to there diagnostic gear and they think the ECM has failed (bike was running fine previously) Im trying to work out if this is coincidence or that something has gone wrong whilst linked up to the interface on the diagnostic gear and fried or wiped the ECM?

    Any Advice Appreciated

    Cheers

ECM's don't fail like that. If they don't replace it for free, get a lawyer

^Yep. Not impossible for electrical components to fail while connected to the bench but extremely unlikely. The fact that the tech had it connected when it failed speaks volumes.

Press the test button with the manager and express extreme dissatisfaction. If he/she can't/won't resolve your issue, escalate it. Always try to resolve the issue at the lowest point possible within the management chain. Avoid yelling, cursing, etc but be persistent. If, you are unable to resolve it through HD themselves, do as suggested and contact an attorney with conversation notes, documentation etc. Good luck

The probability of the ECM failing due to the ECM itself is probably on par with winning the lottery. The more likely scenario their computer sent too much electrical energy to the ECM, they bricked it while programming, or they didn't know what they were doing! Is it possible yes. Can you prove they did it. No. Good luck!

I took you the bike and it was running. You connected your device and fried my ECM due to a faulty machine, technician, or improper programming sequence. Either replace the factory ECM or I will pay the difference to upgrade to a Race/EBR ECM.

Thanks people just confirmed what i thought, i just want to get to the bottom of what exactly went wrong and what was being done at the time of failure. owner of the garage happens to be my sisters future father in law so hopefully will get the truth, bikes only done 3,500 miles and always be kept indoors and pristine. never had any previous issues at all.

Anyone know of the best place to get a new stock or ERB unit from and roughly what it would cost?

I am based in the UK and just trying to do as much re search on this issue as i can so i am clued up when i speak the Techs in garage

    Thanks Again

since you're in the UK, twinmotorcycles.com would be your best bet for a new ecm. they are in the Netherlands.

Well the ECM hasn't failed apparently somewhere in the 2 negative leads off the battery there is a positive charge coming through indicating a shorting wire somewhere in the loom which they think is causing the ECM to through out fault codes and make the bike run unstable and cut out. i have trawled the forum tonight but cant find anything relating to my issue, anyone have any ideas of coming wiring problems that would affect the ECM, i have read something previously relating to relays affecting the running but am unable to find that post again atm

Seems to me a "Buell/Harley dealer" could figure out an electrical short with the bike in the shop easier than we can.

I smell something fishy with them. Good luck Buellsurfer.
