Buell Forum / Buell XB Forum / Buell Lightning XB12S, XB12Ss, CityX, XB12Scg / Ok to run different tire front vs back?

Posted:  03 Mar 2010 19:17 [?]
Currently I have the stock set of Perelli Diablo's on my xb12s. It is time to change the rear tire, but the front one still has a good bit of tread left on it. I ordered a set of Michelin pilot power 2ct's recently and was wondering if it is ok to just replace the rear tire and run the front Perelli until it is time to change it... or is the best bet to just keep tires matches and swap out both???

Good question! I have a different rear on since my front wasn't worn yet. Just saving the front for later... not sure if that is "Kosher"

It's never recomended for street riding but many people do. Infact it is reccomended to always replace 2 at a time even if it's the same tire model, the front and rear wear in together and contour(sp?) alike and when you throw in a different tire that doesn't match the contour it can have adverse effects on your handling. The same goes for mis matched tires that are manufactured to match one another and have slightly different profiles and wear patterns due to rubber compounds and tread patterns. The tread is the biggest factor and why it makes less diference with race tires.

This is all less critical on non sportbikes.

Yes.

It wont make a big difference in "normal" road use.

Okay to me.
Tires aren't rigidly & directly connected, nor roll on uniform surfaces.

Back tires wear faster than front tires, so if you replace the back before you do the front, you're eventually going to replace your front and have an already worn rear, making the problem even worse next time you need to replace the rear. If anything I'd buy another of the same rear, replace it, and hold on to your matching set until you're ready to do both. If your front wears down first, use it as an excuse to go for a ride and do a couple good burnouts before you get home.

Other than that, if you have non matching tires just be positive you have the stickier tire on the front, and never mix radials with normal tires.

I'm rolling a BT016 up front and PP2ct in the rear with no problems.

i've never had an issue on my ex harley. dont know bout how it would be on a sportbike. i even ran a reg front and a radial rear on the harley per avon recomendations cuz of 06 and newer tire sizes prob not a good idea though. never again for me

Just put the rear tire on and learn to ride around any weird shit it does. Once when I was very poor ( like that's changed ! ) I rode for most of a summer with a FRONT 110/80/18 on the rear of my 750 GPZ.  I
didn't push it real hard but it worked fine. With my new Buell things may change but I've run cast off used tires from the dealer's dead pile for years. They're free and I used to get at least a season out of them!!  Cheap bastards RULE !!!   Wayne

if you have already bought both new front and rear tires then , why not change them both and sell your old front on ebay , to get some money for something else you want or for gas money to break in the new set of tires. this is what i did when i needed my first rear tire on my buell my front was new when i bought my buell  wore the rear out quick and replaced both for the best handling and performance and then  kept the old front for a few months needed some money for mods on the buell, so i sold on ebay i got about $68 for a tire with only about 1800miles on it (metzler tire).

I ran the stock front tire with a few new 2ct rears, i felt just fine, Now that my front tire is bald, I am getting a 2ct front to match my half worn 2ct on the rear

Great info guys, I appreciate it...

One more question though as I am bad at judging tires... Think I could do a track day on this tire to kill it off? 5000 miles on it right now...

you may be able to swing it

post a pic with Lincolns head down and one showing how flat the tire is and I will be able to guess better. but all that it will still be is a guess.

Some tracks are VERY picky on tread depth.
