Hello every one! I have been doing maintenance on my new to me 2003 xb9s low.
Have done tires, oil, plugs/wires, and bearings. Here is my dilemma, I see I have a leak from
shifter shaft seal. I am going to replace it but my question is as follows. Are there supposed to be 2 seals on that shaft? From what I can see there is a seal in the actual primary case then the is another black seal looking thing in between the case and the thing that goes on the splines and that is held in place by a screw. I don't know if I am describing it right. Could the PO have put 2 on? or could what I see in the primary case part actually be the shifter bushing popping out? I'm so lost!

    I have the manual
    on figure 6-1

What I think I see is that I have an extra 19 in between the leaky 19 and the number 9.
Can I be wrong and the the first 19 I'm seeing actually 2 poking out and my then 19 just in between floating?

    Thank you for your time!

Oh and if someone can provide the part number for the 03 I would appreciate it as well!

Edit: i tried to add a picture of figure 6-1 from the manual but I didnt know how to make it work.

I went to my HD dealer when I noticed mine was weeping a little. I had asked for one, requesting it for a 2009 HD Sportster 1200 (when I told them it was for a Buell, they told me they didn't have it. Typical).

The one I got is a harder rubber compound and has a small spring. When I picked my old one out, I only noticed one seal. Let me see if I can find a part number for the one I used for you.

I had the same issue last spring on my then, new-to-me, 2003 xb9r. I am one that usually just prefers to pay someone to deal with the hassle so I had the Harley dealership replaced all the seals and they did a dye test which would show up pretty brightly if anymore oil leaked while my bike was parked.

I will look at my invoice once I get home from work tonight and will send you a listing of part numbers they charged me for to do that service. I am not sure if the parts are difference on the primary between the two engine sizes but maybe that will get you started in the right direction.

I thought I had a part number somewhere here on the forums but I do not.

For my bike (2009 XB12Scg), I just requested the part for a 2009 Sportster 1200. You shouldn't have a problem if you do the same. I do know the seal I got was much, much better than the one I took off.

The seal you want is a U shaped circular channel with a coil of wire in the middle - the one from the Sportster will be fine. The other piece I don't think you need. I don't remember there being one when I did my seal.
