    Hi All,

First post here. :). Hope someone has some ideas. The starter on my 2008 XB 12Ss just spins freely. It doesn't push out to engage and start cranking. Looking at the manual starter diagram it seems to me it shouldn't start spinning until it has engaged. Bike has a new battery.
Suggestions please. Possible short? I'll pull it out this week. Bike's my commuter ...... sigh.

    Cheers,
    Seb.

I'm willing to bet your starter went out. Sounds like the Bendix is stuck. You could manually put power to it but I'm pretty sure your going to have to replace it.

I had the same thing happen on my suzuki, it was a bolt that worked it's self loose on the starter gear.

A bad ground did this to me...i had a 06ss...it turned out to be the that grounds the engine. Under the air cleaner. Flexible wire that went from the frame to a triangle shaped bracket.

My 08 XB 12R- had to have a starter put on it at only 2'300something miles. A new primary gasket and possible shifter seal too before you remove it. Yes I would check all the grounds on the bike and Snug them if needed. Battery is new? so if the Starter is not touching/Enguaging the Clutch shell/Sprocket then either there is not enought juice to the starter OR the Starter Solenoid is in need of replacement. Might want to remove it and take it to an Generator/ Starter and Alternator service shop. The Starter Resembles a Chrysler Mimi van Starter(older Model) so have it checked out where you can trust them, before you buy a new one. At least you will be more informed when you do!I always keep a extra Solenoid replacement kit for my bikes . Hope it's just a ground.Good Hunting.*Jimi

Thanks Jimi. yeah it's not a ground and I have started looking for somewhere to get it fixed. I think it is the solenoid. I hear it make a "clack" sound when I first push the starter button (as it spins freely). I think the solenoid plunger is being physically prevented from moving far enough to engage. I need to get it out and bench run it. Will have to wait for the weekend to do it.

    Thanks a lot guys.

Seb Check with your dealer and see if they sell a starter kit, as long as they are buell friendly. The Part number may still be #31603-91 for the 2008 through 2010 XB model bikes.
If they tell you it's not available & you have to buy a whole one then get a print out of the Exploded View get a price on the new one complete then be polite and go check around maybe another H/D dealer OR lshd.com/ after removal check with auto /Starter shops but do not leave it there unless you have a picture and mark it before you take it there and have a price and something to show you left it there. Those Starters are Expensive!
With a good Shop it should not take a 1/2 day to get it done, make sure to ask for them to save any extra parts for you need to save them etc..Take your time you will get it.*Jimi

Jimi, I'm pulling out the starter today. There are limited options here on the island (Mallorca). It's dangerous to take a Buell to the Harley dealer here. Once the warranty ran out I started working on the bike and fixing the problems it had. It's a long story but they stripped threads and generally were totally incompetent. When I changed the plugs I found they'd put a different spec plug in each cyclinder! Anyway I'm pricing starters. Here in Europe I'm looking at over 400€ (US$524) for a Spyke (not going near Harley). But first option is to try and repair mine.
Thanks for the tip on marking it.
    Cheers.
