Welcome!
I would double check that my battery was FULLY charged and the terminals on the battery and starter were all clean and tight.
First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Eric, 29 years old, live in the south of The Netherlands and ride a 2008 XB12s with some mods done by myself.
The problem started after dismounting the starter motor, primary cover, oilpump cover and refreshing the motor oil.
First there was only a problem with the slipclutch from the starter. It started but with very much slipping noise. I ordered a new slipclutch at Twin Motorcycles and repaired it. Because the primary cover was dismounted, I also dismounted the oilpump cover so I could powdercoat them black (together with the heelguards).
Everything was put in place, oil filled, primary chain set at aprox 1cm play, but the starter can't turn the motor around. When I place the rearwheel on a paddock, put it in 5th gear, I hardly can spin the rearwheel when standing on it. Feels like very much compression, so I took out the sparkplugs... Now the starter can turn the whole thing around.
What could be the problem?

^^^^^ what cooter said plus slight possibility you hydrauliced the motor. USE CARE doing this by isolating the spark from the cylinder heads but with plugs removed crank motor for approx. 7 seconds or so and see if any fluids coming out of spark plug holes. a hydraulic-locked motor will prevent cranking. if dry then your problem lies elsewhere.
Thnx. I will double check, but that's not the problem I think. This morning I went to a shop for a new battery, they checked it and said it was OK. Charged it a few times till LED flashed green...
Also hooked the bike to my car's battery without any result...
I tried that with the sparkplugs out. Indeed there was a fuell cloud comming out! But only started it for 1 second and switched it off... Should i do this again and now a lil' longer?
if plugs still out you can. just be DAMN CAREFUL doing it and by that i mean isolate any spark coming from each plug wire. fuel load coming out any plug holes and source of localized ignition ingredients for fire. crank for time i mentioned to clear the cylinders....install plugs and leads...then see what you have. also eric you mentioned that you powder-coated many parts. keep in mind that powder-coating is a very thick materials application and these factory starters properly engaging the starter mechanism and working properly rely on some fairly tight tolerances to work properly. powder-coating these surfaces might be a source of your problem. check all mating surfaces closely.
Just connected some copper wires to the sparkplug so they make propper contact to the mass, and wrapped them with isolation tape so no fuel can reach the spark. Started a few seconds without sparkplugs and nothing coming out... After installing sparkplugs and switching the contact I hear a kind of soft "explosion" and a cloud of ... is coming out of the air intake. Again the starter has not the power to turn the motor around.
Manual turning the rearwheel in 5th gear is also difficult.
The powdercoated parts are not coated on the gasket surfaces, and have nothing to do with electric conduction.
I also coated the seat subframe where the mass from the battery is connected (a long time ago) and I knew I had to sand the screwholes for propper contact.
Is it possible that the starter motor has "half power" or "power loss"? First it even started with a slippery clutch...
Here we are again. Today I tried to run it on 1 cylinder, but even with the compression of 1 it can't turn around.
I'm going to order a used starter motor at Twin and hope it'll work with that one.
I have a used known good starter...
There may be a reason for the issue. Check inside the cylinders if you can. Also, if it doesn't turn over without the plugs in and you can't turn the rear wheel there may be other issues.
