Thread: noise

I know this has been talked about but the sewing machine noise I am experiencing is the most pronounced at 2500rpm.
I don't here it at idle.
is this just a Harley motor normality.

Buells make ALOT of noise, Its impossible to say if your's is normal or not without video or seeing it in person. There are some noises buells make that I might would liken to satans sewing machine.

My guess is you're hearing the primary chain....especially if it's on the tight side of spec or tighter. Mine makes that sound as well. But like Cosworth said....we may not be talking about the same noise.

Does seem like Primary, I describe it as "whirly" noise but sewing machine works too. I describe I4 motors as sewing machine noise

No, take the adjustement inspection cover off the primary cover and adjust the chain shoe till you get approximately 1/4" deflection.

Its kinda difficult, Ive marked a piece of paper where I can stick it up there and move the chain up and down 1/4" in both directions.

Keep it in spec....NOT too tight. If set too tight when cold or warm, once it gets hot, it will be TOO tight and you chance hurting bearings, etc. Again...in spec is fine. I use a little ruler....push down LIGHTLY and put the ruler at the chain lined up at an 'inch line'. Hold ruler steady and push up on chain LIGHTLY and read ruler.
