I'd say chain tightness, gear wear, clutch plates wear, and any excessive metal flaking in the primary case. At the top end check the valves and pistons just to make sure there's no damage. Also bearing condition on crank and connecting rods.
I'm considering going through the engine on my 06 xb12ss but I'm not sure exactly what to look for. It seems to have a lot of bottom end and value train noise. I plan on doing this in the late fall so I can piece together what I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm thinking it's probably bearings when I roll on it hard it's started to make this wonderful pinging noise that's what worries me.
I've done some random searching for bearings and gaskets. What is the xb 12? What rebuild kit do I need? Thanks!
How many miles? Shouldn't have issues till 50k+
It only has 16.5k on it. I changed the oil on it a few weeks ago because it really needed it. I changed it again last night to see if there were any metal shavings on the drain plug magnet it was clean but the oil was really dark and smelled funny now like gas. I'm the third owner so all I really know is what I've done to it.
The oil didn't smell like gas just funny type o
So when I got home from work today I readjusted the primary to .5 inch cold . Most of the noise I seems to be primary side.
