Pick up my 09 xb12ss 2 weeks ago.... and loving it!!!!! I've already had my first scheduled maintance (1000 miles in 4 days) I'm running SE full syn.
I've looked over the forum for an answer but couldn't find one.

ok, here's my question.

What's the black gunk that comes out of the exhaust when you start it? It's irritating cause every time I wash the bike and go for a ride, the rear wheel if full of oil, tar like particles.

Love the forum!!!

is it just on the rear wheel?

yeah, If stick my hand near the exhaust outlet it's full of oil spots, or unburnt fuel or whatever... althoutg the spots don't smell or smudge like oil.. really weird.

I have the gold/amber wheels and i get a lot of gunk on my rear wheel but i thought it was coming from the break dust... i'm running a drummer exhaust and i have put my hand over the outlet and not got any fluid or oil on my hands.
The stuff comes off when you wipe it down but i'm trying to find out what is the best stuff to clean the wheel off and remove any marks.

well like said the gunk comes off really easy, I don't think it's an issue but I'm curious why or what this stuff is.
Did you do the airbox mod?
I haven't and I'm thinking that's the reason..

i have a 2005 xb12s so i pulled out the snorkle that the 2005 have, drilled a few holes in the inner airbox cover added K&N filter, did the re-route and got re-maps plus a bunch of cosmetic stuff

cool, I have a feeling it's the re route mod, I haven't had a chance to do but once I do I'll post the results...
thanks and keep riding hard!!!

The stuff you talk about coming out of your exhaust is carbon. It is no big deal. When you wash your bike or especially in the morning, the exhaust is cold. When you fire the engine up it creates condinsation in the exhaust. (This is why exhausts rust out the majority of the time from the inside out.) THe moisture breaks down the carbon building up in the exhaust and spits it out the tip. Absolutely nothing to worry about or nothing you can do to fix it. THe only thing you can do is keep cleaning it off.
