Buell Forum / Buell XB Forum / Buell X1, M2, S3 / Header Wrap Problem?

Posted:  09 Apr 2009 15:31 [?]
I took my S1 out of storage about a week ago. Got it home the first night with no problems. That night I put header wrap on it. The next day wen I took it out it started to pop on me. When riding at 3000 to 3500 RMP, the exhaust will pop. I thought it was just bad gas, so I dumped the tank and put fresh 93 in it. Nope, still doing it. Ripped apart my carbaratior and cleaned it out. Still doing it. Checked for a leak in the pipe, nothing. It almost leads me to think of the wrap. But I don;t want to take it off before I hear everything. It was a lot of hard work to put it on and I don;t want to mess it all up just to find out it was not the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

could be the wrap...
since the headers are now covered, there burnt a/f mixture doesn't cool down as much = has more moving particles, thus more pull, getting air out faster and maybe, as a result, burning a bit of left-over unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

is the popping bad/loud?
how old are your plugs?

You will be fine Taylor, its isolated and not a common issue.

The plugs where another thing I changed. They have about 50 mi. on them. The popping is not to bad. Like i said, only at 3000 to 3500 RPM. It also makes a weird sound when I turn it off. Almost like my pipe is storing air and when I turn it off, it sounds like a bunch of air just got released out of the tail pipe. No clue what it could be....

what kind of carb & exhaust are you running?
type of airfilter?

I just did the header on my 98 s3 this week. I have not had time to put it on yet. You got me a little worried it was my first time wrapin a header and it was a pain. I plan on firing it up this weekend. I let you know if it pops.

It has a Vance & Haines slip-on. Stock carb but has been jetted. The air filter is an after market Buell race air cleaner. the site I found it on

my guess would be to rejet your carb.

Thanks LeFox, I'm going to have to try that.

Put my bike back together last night. I never had any problems before wraping the header. The thing starts right up with the choke on but when I unchoke it dies it will not run at idle.

when hot & cold?
Posted:  24 Apr 2009 13:05 [?]
It will idle with the choke out about a 1/4 of the way hot or cold.

carb or injected?

Lefox

98 s3 stock cv carb buell pro oval air cleaner pro header with D&D slip-on. I had it dynoed a few years ago with the same set up but with the buell pro slip-on. If i remember right it was running rich when it was dynoed so the guy changed the main jet from I think a 200 to a 195 it ran smoother after he was done.

think you have the same problem as BuellS1Culver.

Thats what I was thinking going to get some new jets this weekend. I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks for the help.

Check your exhaust header torques. I suspect a leak.

My X1 started popping right at 3000, especially on decel. I had assumed intake problems but was shocked to find a broken exhaust stud and obvious leak at the header.

It may be a good time to pull your exhaust studs and replace them before they snap and install fresh gaskets and retaining rings. Cheap insurance so you don't have to drill out some busted stud down the road.

Not 100% on this, but did you have to remove the carb to do the header wrap? If so, you might have a vaccuum hose off. Sounds to me like both issues might just be a vaccuume leak. If it runs with the choke out a little, all you are doing is readjusting your A/F ratio. You are running real lean. Like Lefox said, check all your connections, but not just on the exhaust. Check the intake system as well.

I had to adjust my ilde a little. Went on 3 hour trip in June she ran fine.
