I hit my first rain while riding my XT last month and the bike almost immediately started to stutter. Does anyone have the same problem and how did you solve it. I'm thinking that water is getting in through the air filter and it needs a rain sock. Any help out there?

Does it run fine once the rain stops or its dry? If so, your spark plug wires are probably cracked. Replace them.

My 06 does the same. It has 16,000 miles on it and just replaced the plugs and the wires looked new.

My XB12Ss had the open air box mod and a paper filter when I got it, ran poorly in the rain due to the filter getting wet. Switched to a K&N and it solved my problem.

Get a squirt bottle full of water and mix in a drop or two of mild dish soap. When the bike is dry and running well spray the water on the plug wires and coil. If it stutters or you hear and see arcing... that would be the problem.

I already have a K&N filter so that's not the problem. I bought the bike this spring with 8 miles on it. It did sit in a garage, covered up, for nearly 5 years. Could the plug wires go bad just from that? I like the idea of using the spray bottle. I should have thought of that. That's my next move. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

    Yes, rubber cracks/degrades with age.
