Well, I got the guts to try my hand at a hack pipe. Cost me all of $15 and 2hrs. I spaced on taking pics of the process, but basically it was cutting the muffler into 3 pieces. I kept the front and back stock, pulled out the center sleeve, and created my own internal pipe to connect the inlet and outlet.

I say create because there is no "pipe" connecting the two. I used 1/8" diamond mesh from Home Depot and rolled it around a wrapping paper tube to shape.I had my buddy tack it every few inches with a mig welder to keep it from unravelling.  The mesh itself is about 6" wide and I overlapped it 3" to keep the shape. Then, I wrapped that tube with chopped fiberglass matting (Bondo brand if it matters). Wrapped that in another layer of mesh to keep it together (again, tacked together). Slid the inner "pipe" into the empty muffler over the exhaust port and packed the sides with more chopped matting. Welded the ends back on and BAM! Hack pipe that sounds pretty good! I'll post up a sound clip ASAP.http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/5366_20100119170435_L.jpg

I don't know if my phone will pic it up accurately, but I'll see what I can do.

ooh, can't wait to hear it!

Ok, I tried posting on Youtube but it comes out REALLY odd. Can anyone here transfer my 3g2 file to wmv or something that WILL play normally on Youtube? It sounds like someone is keeping time on a bass drum (thump ...... thump ....... thump). Very slow motion but the video part is in real time. It works fine with Quicktime and RealPlayer. The sounds isn't very good at all, but it at least gives a VERY rough idea.

What's 3g2 from? I haven't heard of that one.

Oops on that... 3GPP2 format. It's what my phone takes. Verizon Motorola. It comes up as Quicktime by default. The file name says Pipesound.3g2 (as I saved it), but the properties says it's a 3GPP2 movie.

I found this converter software, but my work has a firewall that won't allow me to use it! Help 3G movie converter

I have a digital recorder at home that I'll try out tonight. I just don't know if I can upload a mp3 file without video on Youtube.

What year is your bike?  Did you retune it? How does it ride?
Posted:  22 Jan 2010 22:40 [?]
It's a '09 XB9SX with no retune yet. From what I've read, it's a learning ECM so you don't have to remap unless doing a K&N also. I'll let everyone know how it rides next week. Lots of rain here now.

Getting back to BlackandChrome's question, it rides really well! There's a wicked flat spot though around 4500 but I'm guessing that will have to be remapped once the 08+ ECMSpy is ready. There is a bit of popping on decel, but it's a straight through design so I'm not surprised.

Finally got a sound clip. I think I'm going to open it up again and redo some of it. Not loud enough.

Riding off...

I am in the throws of planing my pipe mod. I like the look of this one.

Tell me, what changes are you going to make?
Posted:  01 Feb 2010 16:58 [?]
sounds ALOT like mine, i also think im going to open mine back up for some changes

I'll be removing the outer later of mesh and replacing it with a 2-1/4" pipe. It should be a lot louder. Basically, it will be a glasspack inside a stock can. Total cost with mod revision will be $32.

I have my can all opened up right now and was wondering a few things before I weld it back together.

1) I was planning on just having it come out of the tube that connects to the header into an empty can and out the stock hole (ok, slightly larger than stock). Is this a bad idea? Should I perhaps put in some "flowmaster" type baffles?

2) I have an 04 XB9SX, am I going to have to get it re-mapped? From what I am hearing on this subject it is not necessary unless combined with a K&N filter swap. Is this true?

3) Lastly, if I hate what I come up with, do you think that Randy (Hawk performance) could fix where I f***ed up?

Thanks,   Ben

1) I'd definitely suggest some kind of baffling or running a tube in side. An empty can will sound hollow and not have any "grunt"
2) You'll be fine without a remap as long as you don't do the filter.
3) From what I've read, Randy is a god of mufflers so I'd say yes.

Well, my pipe went under the knife again. Replaced the outer mesh layer with a piece of 2.5" straight pipe with the packing and inner mesh inside that. Basically a glass pack. DEAR LORD this thing is loud! Sounds like a Sportster now. Definitely a noticeable torque increase though. Pulled the nose up without trying last night. Sound clip in the next couple days.

I just ordered one of Hawk's. Its supposed to be a good pipe though and the only one under $200. Should have it back hopefully next week. Here is one of the clips of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=001nPS_sB5s
I did find another cheap stock pipe and I am going to try to do it myself. I have seen some that are open in the middle like your first cut out, but just have screen or mesh welded to the inlet and outlet inside the can. Would that provide enough back pressure for the bike?

I'll be doing yet another hack and pretty much keeping the outer shell of my stock can just for mounting points. Pics to come next week.
