Thread: Gas Leak?

  1. #1
I just filled up the tank two weeks ago and only put 80 miles on it and the gas light came on today. I open it up to look at the gas level and don't see any gas in the tank. I do smell gas from the muffler but no sign of leaks anywhere on the bike. Not even on the ground. Is that possible?

Gas smelling on the muffler is only when the bike is running. The garage does smell like gas after I go out for a ride.

might be something more going on here? any moisture around the fuel pump? it is at left rear bottom of frame. check the gasket for seeping. i'd pull the front spark plug which is easy to get at. see how it looks. burning nicely or black and sooty from overly rich mixture? and just for the hell of it, do you hear air pressure or vacuum when removing gas cap when the bike/frame is warm from running? if the gas cap vent is clogged you'll get some fumes and fuel out the tank vent. worth checking. maybe some other board members smell fuel when they put their bikes away in garage after riding but for me personally, that's a tad scary and usually a sign of a fuel problem somewhere on the bike. i'd check into it further if i were you. IMO

i can smell a little fuel after a hot days ride when im plugging in my battery tender but the plug is right next to the tank vent hose under the tail near the rear sets. I get about 150 miles b4 the low fuel light comes on on my uly 4.4 gal fuel cap.

everything looks dry to me and no air pressure when removing the gas cap. i will get the o2 sensor and the spark plug checked out though.

Unless you're riding around in the 5-7ktwo range all day, 80 miles is not normal.

its normal for both the xb and the 1125
its worse on hot days and breather reroute seems to make it worse.
this comes up at least 3 times a year since iv been on here usally in the hotter months though.
as far as milage there is about the same amount of threads a year anywhere between 70-130 miles the light will come on depending on how you ride and wich modle you ride.
