Thread: How high can I rev it?

  1. #1
Hey fellow Buellers! I own a 2006 city x. My question is this. I know that our Buells dont rev as high as the rice rockets, but how high can I safely bring it up to? Im not talking about a throttle wrenching and going through the gears at a stoplight, but say on the highway? I cruise at 80 and it revs pretty high up there and i begin to get scared im gonna hurt my baby if I keep it up for a prolonged period of time. Any expert advice or opinions?

agree with nik and squid. these 9 motors will live all day at 4700 rpm as the piston ft. speed is still reasonable at that rpm. think of it in the same terms as having an older V-8 powered car that was red-lined at 5500rpm on the tach and you could comfortably cruise the interstate all day long at 3000rpm and never hurt a thing. it is all in the piston foot speeed per mile.

Personally I wouldn't flip the gearing to the 12 if I had more than 1 bike. But, I don't so I use the Buell for the twisties and commutes. Although it worries me some times how high I'm cruising at I see people getting 50+k out of these motors when properly maintained.

XB12 gearing results in 60 MPH @ 3000 rpm, 70 MPH is approx 3500 RPM, 80 MPH is closer to 4000 RPM.

there's a yellow/redline for a reason... at 80 mph you should be well below the redline in 5th gear. It is made to run there.

Im curious where the limits are without a rev limiter, what kinda RPM range can we adjust it too? Upgrading rods and pistons? Can it be done to increase the RPMs?

to be in the same subject...
is it realy bad if I reved my baby once until the rev limiter?
I mean... I had to "race" a little against an asshole in a car at a red lignt and with adrenaline, I cranked my bike till the rev limiter did his job and cut the fire. did'nt check what was the number but... if the rev limiter did his job, I assume it was a little high.
when I suddenly realized that, I pulled over slowly, let the bike run on idle for 30sec, turned it off, light up a cigaret telling me how stupid I am. then, started the bike and nothing wrong.

    is it bad?
    did I hurt my baby?
