replacing header and damaged cam cover. bwb seems to adamantly oppose attempting to remove cover without first removing the rocker box covers (at least one of them) to relieve tension on the cams. i've read a few threads here where guys have had success simply leaning the bike over toward the primary side and being patient / mindful of cams potentially coming off with the cover or falling out on their own.

any one have success with this tool:

perhaps if cover drawn off evenly and slowly the cams would have a better chance of staying put.

looking for first hand accounts and experience if possible. i understand the 'right' way / book way of doing this, just looking for real world experiences. I removed the cam cover off an xl sporty and had a cam fall out. i simply lined up the timing marks to put them back in, no big deal. I imagine the process is similar for the buell.

any insight appreciated, thank you guys.

I have done it many times but you have to make sure the cams don't pull out. If they do, you will have to remove the rocker boxes so you can raise the lifter up as you replace the cam. I just slightly wiggle the cam cover back and forth as I pull it off, looking between the cover and the case to be sure all of the cams are staying in place.

I have done it twice, with out rotatining the motor. The first time I did it I had e3 cam come out in with the timing cover. That was because I had the motor at tdc. But I was able to put it back in place with out rotating and removing the rocker arm.
The second time I rotated the crank 180 pass tdc and the cams stayed in.
Also I didn't use a puller, I just used my dead blow.

The only time that I have had a problems pulling the cam cover off is, if the motor is high milage (40,000 plus)
Or there was a bearing that failed.

thanks guys. think i'll give it a shot.

would like to think i could do this without rotating the engine/removing rocker covers if enough planning and patience involved.

good place for cam cover gasket? do you guys use rtv in conjunction?

If I didn't tear the gasket, most of the time I just reuse the old one. I don't use rtv
