I got a 98 S3 I want to check and or adjust the primary chain. I ordered a service manual but can't wait it's going to be in the 80's the next few days. Can someone tell me the correct steps to check the play in the chain and how to adjust.

aaron, download the manuel for the xb up at the top of the fourm. I know it is a different bike but the steps will be the same. The only major difference is the inspecion cover is shaped different.

aaron, I have the same 98 s3

open the inspection cover above the shifter.
you will be able to see the chain, it should have 1/2-3/4 inch of slack if i remember. but rotate the rear tire with it in gear to see if it has any tight spots. the adjustment is on the bottom of the primary cover hex lock nut 3/4 or 7/8 and an allen bolt that does the actual adjustment. break the lock nut loose adjust the allen, then tighten it back up.
hope that helps

Cool, The one thing you have to keep an eye on is the adjuster block itself inside the primary cover, they wear and can come apart. There was a running change, but I don't know if there was ever a recall for it.

Going to pull it apart this fall and check that and the clutch now that I have a service manual.
