I'm wondering if this will come with instructions on how to bend the seat. I have heard the old pm performance had instructions using a hair dryer and ratchet strap as well as spacers to move the seat latch

jmcrutch
04-04-2010, 03:56 AM
That might be something that they want us to figure out and give feedback about what worked to get the seat on.

Gotta bend the seat to get it to work?? meh [sad]

jmcrutch
04-04-2010, 04:01 AM
Well, all the mounting locations for the seat should be the same, because they will just get lifted along with the subframe. The only thing I think that might interfere would be the top front edge of the seat against the airbox cover. Anyone out there actually have one of these lifts who can chime in?

BuddhaBuell
04-04-2010, 04:03 AM
from what I have read due to my interest in this look...
...is that you also have to remove or shave some of the foam so that when you do bend the seat itself and put the cover back on it fits/forms better because you are shortening the area in which the seat sits when you jack up the rails with the spacers
[smirk]

but then again this is my 420th post so ya know it could all just be in my head...:p

Evil Mechanic
04-04-2010, 05:07 AM
Happy 420 buddha!

You won't have to do any of those things. I have different spacers, but they all do the same thing. You will just need to use a good bit of force when putting your seat back on for the first few times. After a while the seat kinda remembers the bend and it gets easier. What I did was kinda curled it against my elbows while reinstalling the seat, and then put a lot of force at the very end of the tail to get it to lock down.

Great price! I might pick up a set for just incase my ideas don't work out.

Hey Army how long did it take to figure out that D2Moto was going to refund your money? I've paid for the K&N a while ago, and my profile on their website claims that my item was shipped on March 30th. You said that they gave you a similar run-around, but how long did it take?

Got a set of these today. They aren't as agressive as my current lift by far so I don't think I will like them. Also the tap job they did is pretty shabby atleast on mine. Id be afraid they would cross thread, or even strip when torqued down. I might swing by their shop and see if they can make spacers to match my lift.

browland

My current lift is based off the trojan horse brackets just to give everyone an idea how agressive mine are. These DM spacers would be good for someone short , or someone who wants a small lift.

04-08-2010, 01:01 PM
Hey Evil, are you going to mention the passive look to them? I'd really like them super aggro, plus I'm over 6'..

browland
04-08-2010, 04:49 PM
are you going to mention the passive look to them?

Seriously? I was hoping for the seat height to only be slightly raised for rider and an aggressive tilt in the back I guess I'll be disappointed

Evil Mechanic
04-08-2010, 04:53 PM
The more agressive the tilt, the higher the seat will be. There is no way around that man.

I am going to mention it to them dude [up]

I just got mine... and as Evil said the tap job is kinda scarin' me a bit. Appears that some of the material caved in or didn't fill during the casting process. The surface is also a little on the rough side and could use a little smoothing prior to paint. I'm gonna do a quick install when I get home and will be sure to post up. [up]

jmcrutch
04-08-2010, 08:44 PM
Haven't got mine yet. Is the thread issue something you think you could just chase through with a fresh tap?

xtremelow
04-08-2010, 09:43 PM
Yeah as far as the void in the casting I think it is just a spot that hold air during the curing process, probably could be fixed by tilting the mold a little.

My biggest issue was the threads being very thin as the castes hole that they tapped was to big. Also the hole that the stock bolt goes through to mount the spacer to the frame is in the complete wrong spot, both sets I ordered have the hole
about 1/4" to high so I had to mill the holes out.

I will post pics tonight after work, I have mine all polished up and redrilled for proper fitment. I will also post side by sides of what I had to do since I have two sets.

xtremelow
04-08-2010, 11:04 PM
K, I noted on the site all the issues I had. I was also amazed at how rough the cast was, we have cast parts here at my shop and they are still smooth not a dang 60 grit piece of sand paper.

meetch, did you have any issues getting the seat on? Did you have to bend it at all?

meetch
04-08-2010, 11:27 PM
As for the void in the tapped hole... I plan on using a drop of loctite and slightly snugging it up.. I'm sure tightening it too much will cause a break for sure.

And for the seat... It fits decent without bending and locks in no problem... but for the perfect fit I will be slightly bending it. You can feel a little bit of pressure at the tail of the seat.

oh and thanks rory

buellbee
04-10-2010, 03:55 PM
i got mine installed. The holes are off but a little help from the GF I got them installed. Definitely not flush to the frame, about an 1/8th of an inch gap, only because the holes aren't lined up. As others said, the treading is questionable. I used copious amounts of Loc-Tite Blue.

That being said, they still work as intended. And for $30, I wasn't expecting a masterpiece of work.

browland
04-10-2010, 03:59 PM

true but you would think when a company wants to test a product, especially one geared towards a group with a tight user base, they would at least make it functional without modification.

Crap- bought mine from pm-performance a year ago and cost me a kidney, oh well.
They came with some spacers for the seat lock and instructions on bending the seat with ratchet straps and a hairdryer. Didn't need to bend or modify the seat at all it.

tf1175
04-10-2010, 05:21 PM
i test fit mine and they fit pretty good to the frame but like everyone has said, the holes on the bottom need to be drilled out so get a bolt in there. The threads look kinda sketchy too but im gunna put some loctite on it and that should work just fine. All i did to my seat was bend it in my arms and it fit perfectly. All in all its not bad for 30 bucks

That's the point of a "beta" product. It won't be perfect. I myself didn't need to modify it to fit.

I agree though, some things like the quality of the cast shouldn't be there. The shotty threading also irked me. But I got it all installed and am pretty happy with it. Looks much better than stock.

xtreme how does the ride feel with the lift?

xtremelow
04-11-2010, 12:04 AM
Awsome, more agressive but still comfortable, also make wheelies easier since you have more of an upright area to sit on while on one tire.

Little to nice, got pulled over on my test ride, but it was just coming off a corner and tire was only a couple inches off the ground while speeding up, I got away with an explination of what my bike was since the cop was a motor head and a warning, oh and he bent my plate back a bit so it was straight (bent it back as soon as I got home).

man, i can't keep my front wheel down as it is. the more and more I've been riding (i've only got 2000 miles under my belt so far) the faster i find myself going with out even realizing it. even with the crossroads and leaning over i'm lifting from 1st to second and 2nd to 3rd. I think it saved me from a wreck the other day too. came off and exit ramp in second and rolled on hard, literally as i was clutching to shift i started a tank slapper for the brief moment before i shifted, and the front lifted and ended the wobble.

I am just happy with the overall appearance that the seat/tank/fairing are all on nearly the same height plane. If you set a yard stick on the front windscreen to the seat it all holds an equal line which has been one of my overall appearance mods since I chopped the fairing last year.

xtremelow

No I am waiting on hers until we powder coat them.

IMO just from my bike the overall rider seat height doesnt change. Atleast not enough to notice so to do the tail lift for the shorter riders wont effect the ridability for them. It only really effects the passenger part of the seat, if you ever carry a rider on that small ass thing[smirk]

04-14-2010, 06:05 PM
So besides polishing and moving the mounting hole did anyone else feel like it was a total pain in the ass to put these things on?...

I decided I would keep them and give em a try took me a bit of dremeling which was easy but... As far as mounting, I had to mount to the side rail first to make sure that hole would line up. Then to the actual frame and with that bolt going through the back side it was a pain in the ass to get threaded then tighten with an allen wrench because I couldn't get a ratchet back there. Seating position is nice haven't taken it for a spin yet. The fitment left some gaps.

Anyone want to trade a low seat for my S? I hear it makes the lift look more dramatic.

AN UPDATE:

Hello,

Thank you for your recent purchase. It has come to my attention that the pieces you received in our attempt to test release the new XB-S Subframe Spacers have failed across the board. I am honestly embarrassed by the outcome of this test but with an operation as small as ours these experiments can sometimes yield unfavorable results.

Regardless, I stick by our products, even the ones that suck. I have not forgotten about you and in an effort to remedy the situation I will continue to send you prototype iterations until the piece is nothing but absolutely perfect. Please bear with us -- while the suits at H-D may have their turned their backs on the Buellers, I will not. Stay tuned and thank you for your opinions, even the painfully honest ones.

id be willing to take an old jank pair from someone at a reduced price if/when you guys get your new ones. But it would be better they go toward their intended purpose than the scrap yeard.

I dont really forsee them just shipping out all new lifts to everyone. IMO they will just run another Beta set and see how it goes. Not saying they arent a good business but to completely lose out on the costs of producing each part good or bad just doesnt make sense since we all knew it was a Beta test and problems would most likely be found.

BUT I am am all for lifts that are just how we need them (with no mods).

konarider94
04-16-2010, 02:31 AM
maybe i read that email differently than you extreme. i guess time will tell. i too thought it would be pretty amazing if they did sent out new parts to everyone but the cost per part is really small if you dont include the tooling.

Phew I just spent most of my day grinding, drilling, and sanding these spacers in order to make them look nice and fit. I still haven't been able to get the upper bolt holes to align. Its very fortunate that they will be sending all of us new and improved versions as they are developed.

Did you try bolting in the top first then checking the bottom holes for alignment mark what needs to be removed finish the drilling the mount the top first again followed by the bottom?

What I did to tighten my bolts was use the adaptor for a cordless gun to mount 1/4" drive sockets to (same size as the allen drive) then used two 12" 1/4" extensions and a 1/4" wrench to reach through the base of the seat and tighten it that way.

Ive been talking with Tom about something... Is there anybody on here that is against another 1/4 inch of lift on these things (basicly the hight of the trojan horse and pm performance lift)? He is worried poeple will complain about how the seat fits against the airbox cover, and i reassured him its not going to be any different than it already is. Nobody ever complained about the trojan horse kit, or pm performance kit fitment other than having to man up when putting the seat on the first few times. From what i read, the seat didnt slide right on with the d-moto kit either so other than having an agressive stance to match the other 2 kits out there there would be no difference in my eyes.

jmcrutch
04-26-2010, 10:18 PM
I actually gave him feedback that I would have liked the lift to be slightly more aggressive. I think a good reference to talk about the effect of the lift is the resulting height of the taillight. I told him that I would prefer the taillight to end up being about and inch taller (not much). I think that making the spacer 1/4" taller might have a bit too much effect on the height of the taillight, IMO. But certainly I'm in favor of a slight increase.

Evil Mechanic
04-26-2010, 11:47 PM
Just curious then how you expect him to make it more agressive without making the space between the lower mounts and main frame greater?

Also, go measure the height of your tail light for me. Ill measure mine. We can see if mine is where you want yours to be. I might be swingin by so he can get some measurments in the coming weeks.

jmcrutch
04-27-2010, 12:54 AM
I don't expect the tail to lift more without the spacers getting taller. I just contemplate that increasing the height of the spacer by a quarter of an inch would lift the back of the tail too high for my tastes. I haven't calculated the exact trigonometry between the relationship of the spacer height and the tail piece, but for sure by pivoting the subframe from the forward bolts, adding a certain amount of height to the spacers midway to the tail lifts the end of the tail a greater distance than the added thickness of the spacer. I was contemplating that adding a quarter of an inch to the current height spacer might result in a larger lift at the tail than would be aesthetically pleasing. My preference would be to say that I would like the tip of the tail to be 1-2 inches higher than the current spacer configuration yields, and then add whatever additional thickness to the spacer required to yield the desired tail height. Hopefully that best explains my position.

Evil Mechanic
04-27-2010, 02:53 AM
yeah i gotcha. I just wasnt sure if you were smart enough to realize that you can't give the tail a more agressive lift without adding to the gap between the subframe and the main frame, but i see that you meant you didnt think it needed a full 1/4in, and that you are one of the smart ones :D I think 1/4in is going to be perfect for the 1 to 2 more inches you are looking for. Do you have an s, scg, or ss?

Well I shot them an email yesterday and got this response.

"We are expecting a shipment from the foundry this week. From there, they just need to be drilled, tapped, and powder coated. The first two steps can be done this weekend, it all depends on how fast we can get them back from the painter."

So it looks like they are actually making some headway.

jmcrutch
08-24-2010, 11:25 AM
The second round of prototypes did still have some fitment issues that resulted in some remaining gaps. The guy at Diesel thinks that the problem is too much tolerance issues having two fixed fasteners (2 bolts into 2 tapped holes), and no floating fasteners (bolt and nut through two holes). So the next iteration may not be as clean as original design concept, and may include two exposed bolts, which is okay with me as long as the fitment is spot on. But overall the second prototype is VASTLY improved over what was delivered the first time, which required a ton of modification to get to fit at all. But I'm guessing that if they improved the production spacers over the second prototype by as much as they improved the second over the first prototype, it should be pretty darn close to perfect.

well I'm doing a rear conversion to the lightning from my fire bolt, i took care of it last night though, i have like zero patience. They spacers are great but they are gonna need some massaging to remove the little gaps. I'll post a pic when i get back, i def love the look of the lift with these spacers, now all i gotta do is send my tail to get chopped and then figure out where to mount my brae reservoir, any thoughts from factory lightning owners, maybe a peek inside your tail? or anyone who's done a swap, where'd you put everything?

Mine definitely have a gap between the spacer and the subframe rail, one side is larger than the other. I thought that's the kind of stuff the first round of spacers was supposed to work out for this batch, but I won mine for free so I'm not about to complain about it. Someday I may spend a little time and see if I can get them flush. I pulled them off until I find the normal XBS seat anyway. I think my tail looked weird with the low seat, but I think the normal seat will definitely help that out.

Mine on the right side had a gap issue also - '09 XB9SX. Just bought a set last month. I don't think it was as great as a gap as yours, but its there. I used some black silicon to fill mine since I have a black frame. Looks better now, but I wished it fit as good as the left side.
