ASB and JT&S have the 1125 exhaust shootout set for May 17th - 19th most likely with Erik Buell present. This will take place at JT&S in Sonoma CA at infineon raceway(sears point). They may need help. Everyone is welcome to go hang out and bug Erik.

A few years ago, a bunch of badwebbers got together and conducted a fairly intense exhaust shootout for all of the easily obtained US XB exhausts. Prior to that test, the data that was present was all on different bikes, different dynos, different operators, different altitudes, different weather, etc.

Terry at JT&S and I have been talking about doing that same testing for the 1125 market for some time. We've locked down the date for doing it in approximately 5 weeks on the JT&S dyno in the days just after the AMA races conclude there on May 16th. We have a bike, we have the room, we have discussed the test plan but haven't written it down yet. It will be similar to the XB testing, with a few changes:
1) The XB testing was for both an XB9 and an XB12. This will be using a single 1125R only.

2) The sound testing in the original XB test was a bust. We had some setup problems, and determined that recording sound in a dyno room is pointless, as the dyno drum/tire noise is too prevalent in the actual sound files. So we’ll set up a drive by mic and capture the sound in the external environment just outside the shop.

3) We should be able to use the EBR tunable race ECM for fueling correction. But we’d probably swap the stock ECM in to establish how far off the pipe runs on the stock map with AFVs set at 100

4) This will likely be limited to slip-ons only, as we won't have time to do the engine pivot to mount up full systems.

I am going to contact all the exhaust manufacturers over the next few days to see who wants to play. For now, please respond here and tell me who you'd like to see contacted. If you have an email contact of someone at one of the manufacturers that you have communicated with, please provide that to me. I don't know how many of the European pipe makers will want to play, but I'd guess most of the US ones will. If one or more manufacturer won't provide a pipe, we'll see what we can do to scare one up somewhere, but we don't have a lot of time to get this prepped. I suspect most will want to participate, as it was GREAT publicity for the players in the 2006 XB test.

I'll start a short list, please feel free to add:
Jardine RT5
FMF Apex
D&D
HMF
Drummer
Brian Reinhart's
KEDA (version??)
Barker
TorqueHammer
FreeSpirit
HR1 Riot

I'm sure there are several more, let me know.

Al

This should be a good one.
My guess will be that the d&d will make the most peak power and The torque hammer will make the most all around.I think for fun we should all make a guess.

Ill give my guess towards the Drummer. I know a guy who has had 3 exhausts on his 1125 and the drummer is his favorite performance wise.

I hope Randy gets his done and enters. I would like to see his do well.

I haven't heard that Randy is producing one yet. I know he was working on it but I don't know that he has gotten it where he wants it yet.

I am excited for the results. I have been leaning toward the Keda RT-3, or FMF full if the funds are there, but I am dying to know how the various exhausts do.

I would love an HPE, Drummer or Free Spirits if it weren't for the price.

Glad I held out this long to get one. I'm planning on an exhaust in the next couple of months.

Im super siked too. This will be a great part of my decision on what to buy whether its a keda or a hmf or whatever it is.It usually takes a couple years for product development to come about for newer vehicles and I believe the companies have put up some good quality pieces. But some of the results havent been to peachy.
This shootout will be a great part of my decision.
I only wish I was closer to see the progress in person and to give a helping hand to keep it as straight forward as can be and keep everything documented well.
like I said I believe a wide open style will make the most peak power and a torque hammer will win accross the board.Dris has put tons of time in these bikes and I believe it will shine.:D

Al said it will take a couple of weeks to get all the data correlated and published. I haven't heard anything else.

The numbers will be out shortly. I have the preliminary report now, there will be some small changes, but the data is there and done.

Wow, finally. I read where Al was having some trouble with the data. Come on Dean, you can leak some info...I won't tell anybody. ;)

Can't leak any data, but the video I posted of the RT-4 on the dyno at EBR should give you a pretty good idea on what happens, although I didn't "win" both of the pipes I sent in did pretty good.

Wow, Awesome job guys! Thank you so much for all your hard work. Well, what do all you guys think? Is there a way to hear these pipes as you tested them? If a guy wants the most torque and hp for the money maybe Keda is the way to go? Lets hear your thoughts.

Hey d adams, thanks for the link. In your opinion, which exhaust had the deepest or lowest tone? I heard an after market exhaust on an XB at a dealer and if you had your eyes closed you would swear it was a big block v8 you were standing next to. Did any of the exhausts tested give you that kind of feeling?

d_adams
07-14-2010, 05:57 AM
I haven't listened to the audio clips from the report yet, but what I've heard in person, mine and the drummer are pretty close to the same sound at idle, above 5k rpm, mine are a litte louder and deeper toned. Standing next to mine, up to 5 feet away, you can feel it shaking stuff. 10 feet away, it's just a good rumble. Didn't hear the CES in person, so I can't comment on it. Jardine/FMF/HMF, etc. are pretty much all the same, loud/sharp sounding to me.

Either way, all the aftermarket pipes are pretty loud.

What octane fuel was used for the tests using the "race" tune? Was it done with standard 93 octane, or was it actually done with 100+ octane fuel? If so, wouldn't it have made more sense to do the test with a tune for pump gas, as that is what 90% of the people here will use. I only ask because EBR lists their ECM's for pump and race gas, with their being an obvious differentiation between the two.

d_adams
07-16-2010, 05:57 PM
From what I gathered, they used 93 octane fuel. Race fuel (sunoco 260?) is maybe 98 octane. There are 2 types of tunes, race w/pump gas & race w/race gas. They used what the average street rider will use.
