So here's the deal...

I know a bunch of you just bought a bunch of these from Blackflash (Nice job BTW Black![up]) but since I posted pics of the sliders I had made for me a while back I had some interest so I looked into what it would take to have them made...

Long story short, I can also offer them at $65 per set shipped (continental US only unless you pay additional shipping). I'm thinking Paypal unless you're in the Pittsburgh Area and want to pick them up in person, then cash will be fine. I will need at least 20 sets ordered to make it worth while. Give me a head count and if I get enough orders I'll make it happen. Post here or PM me if you're interested.

Here's the details:

-6061 Al
-Stainless all-thread and hardware
-Set-screw on one side to lock it in
-Designed with a stand-off to let them tighten on the axle so they don't touch your forks or swing-arm.
-Made specifically for XB models (not sure if the Uly is the same or not?)
-Expect a 2 week turn-around time to give me time to have them made.

I haven't looked into a powder-coating yet but will consider it at an extra cost to be determined.

Here's what mine look like:

Can you make the rear pair with the notch for the stands?

Can you make the rear pair with the notch for the stands?

That shouldn't be a problem...I'll have to just figure out the dimensions.

Would you consider making shorter ones like the Dark Horse sliders?

Would you consider making shorter ones like the Dark Horse sliders?

Yeah. Perhaps everyone would prefer the front's shorter? From a machinability standpoint, it's no problem at all. I'd prefer to standardize the parts as much as possible though...One-offs would end up being waaaaay more expensive.

IMO the same length set I have from work look better than different sizes, the same size evens itself out although the front is much smaller and doesnt really need the larger size.

My vote is for unification, and same size.[smirk]

would really be cool if you can make almost a dome design with a domed apex

kinda like a hearshey kiss

Any of those ideas "could" be achieved with a CNC machine but in order to offer them at a reasonable price they have to be pretty much one design...unless I had interest for hundreds of them of course.;)

I certainly don't mind changing it up a bit if we agree on a design. Feel free to offer up ideas!:D

Some ideas off the top of my head:

-Hemispherical ends
-Spikes
-Chamfered (this is what Blackflash offers)
-Grooveed (on end or shaft)
-Spooled rear

can I use my Pitbull stands with them?

50dro
04-18-2010, 03:21 AM
can I use my Pitbull stands with them?

I haven't worked out the dimensions to that yet (assuming you have a spool-type stand and you're referring to the rears) but there's no reason that I couldn't make a feature in the rears to accept a spool-stand as the Darkhorse ones do.

If you can give me the width where the stand would lift it and the diameter in the area that it would be lifted, I can work it into the design no problem.

Thanks!

xtremelow
04-18-2010, 07:25 AM
Pitbull stands dont use the axle slider so yes you could still use the stand if you have this one that is.

I called a few powder-coaters today and got 1 quote so far. Looks like it would be an additional $25 based on this quote alone but I'd like to get that lower and would definitely pass along the savings to you if I could. Let me know what you think and what prices you may have paid for coating in the past.

I looked into hard anodizing (class III)today. It turns out that ASB offers their sliders with an anodized finish. It is significantly less expensive to do and from what I've learned today, it has similar (if not better) performance when compared to powder coating. It actually penetrates into the aluminum so the adhesion is better.

I can offer that at an additional $10 per set or $75 total per set for a matte black anodized set.

Those of you that asked for "powser-coated" please confirm that the anodized version is acceptable.

Thanks!!

PS - Still need 12 more orders to make this happen...[cool]

I would get a set...with grooves. I would prefer a 'cone shaped' version...with black anodizing.

I'm nterested in a thinner set.

50dro
04-20-2010, 06:28 PM
OK guys...THANKS!!

uh2: Can you post a sketch of your idea? If everyone interested likes your's more we could switch.

Keep in mind that I have to go with the consensus to keep the price down. One-offs can get real expensive to machine. I may be able to do thinner or thicker sets or spooled or non-spooled versions without much hassle but a completely different design isn't possible at these low quantities and low prices. If the demand is there for an alternate design I can definitely accommodate but so far I only have interest in 10 sets and need 20 to make it a go.

dave_xb12r
04-20-2010, 07:00 PM
I "tested" the dark horse sliders and they worked great. To me, I don't see a point in having them so long. If I was designing them, I'd make them more like the dark horse sliders. Also, it would be cool to offer a graphite color to match our 12 frames.

50dro
04-20-2010, 07:41 PM
Thanks Dave! Maybe I'll lean towards the shorter ones? And I noticed that Dark Horse also doesn't do the set screw thing so I may just leave that out and put in a "leverage hole" like they do?

Are the newer XB's frames and swing arms graphite as well or did the go completely black? Again...Standardization is key here. I don't think I'll be selling enough to warrant multiple colors, so black may be the best bet for now...

BTW...Did you want a set? :D

icepop77
04-20-2010, 07:44 PM
You can't go wrong with black. Even on a silver swing arm, black looks good. I personally don't care how big they are. They just need to be functional and do the job if they're ever called on to do it.

dave_xb12r
04-20-2010, 07:51 PM
I dont want to commit to a set right now being how funds are tight and I already have dark horse sliders. Although I do need to replace my left sides still. But I'll def get a few of my friends to order some.

Black may be the way to go then. I would def do a leverage hole to make it easier for someone changing a tire. Having to search for the right hex would be a PITA vs any screwdriver

If I get a side job this month I'll order a set. Unless you wanna trade for graphic work.

50dro
04-20-2010, 07:58 PM
That's cool Dave! Thanks for the plug with your friends! Much appreciated! +1 for that!

I don't need any graphic work right now but if these things happen to take off I might need some marketing ideas, web sites etc. Here's hoping...

Not to get off topic, but what "graphic work" do you offer?

dave_xb12r

Leverage hike would be the way to go. I would be hesitant to use a set screw as it may mess up the threads on the rod.

Plus that is one less step tapping those holes too.

I did create the dowel design and it is a shame that you admited you took an idea and now are trying to use it.Be careful I have my idea covered. Its been in the works for 3 weeks now.The file date was april 1st and it only cost me 130.00 so far.Be careful

I also want to note that I was contacted from a member on this forum as a group buy.You are simply advertising .Which I believe should not be tolerated in any forum. That is not fair to the vendors.Vendors are the people that pay to keep this site up.I kept myself in check with the folks to let them know the progress.I didnt advertise.I hope a moderator comes in and takes care of this swiftly. Most forums ban for this.[down]

Blackflash, there's enough business to go around. I have my adblock on but just curious, are you sponsoring this site?

Here on Buellxb, we don't stop anyone from selling things. We have a wide range of custom products available here that no other forum has.

Check this link and you'll see how he's been working on these for some time now.

link (http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Do-It-Yourself-Buell-Mods/Dark-Horse-Axle-Sliders)

Also, as you can see from the updates, he's decided to do a completely different style than yours.

for a minute i thought this was the badweb forum from what blackflash said...no fighting here and free to sell whatever you want

04-21-2010, 02:15 AM
Wow! Where do I begin?

Let me start by saying that I refuse to join into a pissing match over this but due to the inaccuracies of your statements and threats, I feel that I need to reply. I won’t drag all the good people here at BuellXB through the mud that you created by taking this conversation any further than this post.

I did create the dowel design and it is a shame that you admited you took an idea and now are trying to use it.Be careful I have my idea covered. Its been in the works for 3 weeks now.The file date was april 1st and it only cost me 130.00 so far.Be careful

As Dave graciously pointed out to you, I’ve been working on mine since January. Furthermore, do you seriously think you came up with the “dowel design” on your own? Dark Horse has been using it for some time now and it’s not like it’s not used in industry anywhere else. In patent language, they call that "prior art"…Look it up! I think you just lost $130. If it makes any difference, I was inspired by the Dark Horse design, NOT yours.

Most forums ban for this.

I’m barely a vendor. I’m just a dude that owns a Buell that developed a good idea and is trying to offer it to other Buell owners at a good price. Whether you were contacted by a member or are a member and are offering something, I don’t see much of a difference here. We’re in the same boat believe it or not. I see it as friendly competition and capitalism at work. I suggest you see it the same way. We are offering similar products after all. They will look similar to one another by default but I assure you, they won’t be exact. It looks like the moderator has “taken care of it swiftly” as you asked. And if the other moderators disagree, I’ll gracefully bow out.

There are lots of people on this forum and in the Buell community that started off the same way…small operation on the side. Special O.P.S., Hawk Performance, Voodoo, Mattr, and Polkiejoe are a few that come to mind. That’s what makes BuellXB home to me. They (unlike other forums...not mentioning any names)encourage people to offer something up that will help us all out in the end. If this endeavor becomes a legit motorcycle business for me someday (and it may), you better believe I would become a sponsor of this site (you can count on that Dave). If I were “banned” from doing this project, who would benefit? You?

Count me in for a set as well.
I dont even own a xb but I'll buy a set.

For our mutual benefit and to keep the peace here, I’ll trade you a set once I get to 20 sets. If you’re serious, PM me..

Now let’s act like gentlemen and drop this promptly… (no handshake icon [confused])

Good luck!

I did mean to post the last statement .I wrote it up and clicked it off but for some odd reason it still posted it.I hit the contact button to talk to someone off this site and left a message. But since dave got on and explained how this site works " custom parts are tolerated" .That is completely awesome.I was told by other forums to leave because my parts are interfearing with their vendors.
So thats completely awesome that stuff like this is okay.Like I said I didnt mean to post this up but it happened.Maybe dave can clean the mess up.

So skinny is the it design then?

I would think a skinny set for both front and back would be easier to produce and quicker since you would only have to make 2 seperate sets since the inner axle sizes are different aide to side. As far as inner sizes I would just make them up to fit the front and let the rears ride off those.

50dro
04-21-2010, 10:47 PM
It seems to be the consensus for the most part. I'm going to lean in that direction I think.

It would be nice to standardize the fronts and rears (inner dimensions) but I'll have to look into the feasibility of that. Are yours like that Xtreme? I would prefer that the sliders don't come in contact with the swing arm or the forks. That's one of my favorite features of my design. If I can make them rest on the axle and standardize the inners, that would be great! Thanks for the input Xtreme![up]

I still need more orders though..Bring em on!!:D

So what style are you gonna go with? a few people have put in some great design ideas but I am still down for the same exact ones I signed on for originally, the ones at the top of the thread. In black anodized though. I personally like the basic stubby look of them, they go good with the XBS style.

50dro
04-22-2010, 10:24 PM
I was working on that today! I think I'm going to reduce the length by 3/8". It does look nice at that length! I'll post a picture of the CAD file tomorrow to give you an idea of what it will look like.

If you're set on the longer ones, I can always sell you the ones that are on my bike now if you want? I think I may go with the shorter ones myself...

Stay tuned...

xtremelow
04-22-2010, 10:34 PM
The sliders I made had one side lathed to fit the nut side of the axle and the other side front and back were sized for the front axle round side.

Originally I had all 4 sliders different in one way or another weither it be lenght or centering section that would sit inside the axles.

Here are my older set, my new ones have the rears the same as the front

saw the listing on CL pitts.

i may be in for a set of these,(shame i just purchased the hf ones...) looks like the final design is set, just waiting for people to jump in on them?

i don't care about color, whatever is cheaper to be honest.

my only question is in regards to how they will be fastened. off an on talks about a set screw or leverage. any idea which it's going to be?

50dro
04-26-2010, 05:52 PM
Hi Matt!

The final design is about 99% set right now. I'd like to see the feasibility of making them fit the 1125's so if you know anyone that owns one that would be willing to take a few dimensions for me please send them my way. I hope to have the 1st set machined this week so that I can verify the fit before I have a bunch made up. At that point I plan to give you all a few days to commit to the purchase then put the total order in for machining. The goal is to have them all machined by May 15th then probably another week for the anodized ones.

A machined set would be the most economical...$65

They will be fastened using a hex nut on one side (with threadlocker) between the all-thread and the slider and a leverage hole on the other slider (with threadlocker). I was going to do the set screw idea but it tends to damage the threads.

Please confirm that you want a set and I'll put you down for 1...Thanks![up]

To get into this build, please post your interest on this thread by NO LATER THAN Sunday, May 2, 2010.

I will be PMing all of you that have already shown interest with my PayPal info. The goal is to have the machining done by May 15, 2010 and the anodizing about a week thereafter.

FYI...I think I stated in my PM's to you that you had until Friday to commit. That was a typo. I'd like to have your payment by Sunday, May 2 to be in this build.

Also...While waiting for my first-off samples, I thought you might like a profile view of the sliders to get a feel for the "shorter" profile. I think it's just the right length!:p

The set I have picture earlier in the thread have the same OD dim. as the axle so the don't touch the swing arm and the ID that fits inside the axle is standardized front and back, this would allow you to make just two different sliders basically one for each side ad they would fit front and back.

Best shot I have right now

Thanks Xtreme! Mine are a bit larger than the large side of the rear axle but my "stand-off" takes care of them not touching the swingarm. I took some measurements on my bike the other night and got it down to 2 sizes. :D Just need that 1st set to verify and I can have my machinist knock 'em out!

Thanks everyone for being patient. Trust me...I'm working hard to get these out to you ASAP!

so when should shipment be expected? a week or so?

50dro
05-10-2010, 01:01 AM
That sounds about right...I'm expecting the 1st round of machined parts tomorrow which I'll take to the anodizer by Tuesday. 3-5 days there, then pack and ship them. Meanwhile the rest of the machined parts should arrive through the week. All the all-thread is ready to go![up] I'm also expecting the packaging to be in later this week.

Look for status updates, pics etc throughout the week.

Thanks for your patience! [up]

No set plans yet I have to wait on the insurance company to see what they say[sad]

if they cover the damages or total it out I will just make my bike better, but if for some reason they dont I will basically make it back to what it was with a different paint job. If I cant buy it back I basically have an empty templet to work with so I have no clue where I would start the CR modified would be sweet but I have money wrapped up in other places so I am a bit tight so a brand new bike might be out of the picture[smirk]

50dro
05-18-2010, 10:36 AM
@ Xtremelow:
Pretty sure buying it back is always an option. You'll just have to deal with a salvage/reconstructed title.[down]

----------OR---------------

Find out what the amount is that they will total it at and negotiate with the insurance company for just under that amount (if it's feasible to do so financially)

Good luck X!! We'll all be patiently waiting and watching.;)

As far as doing more...I need to look into that. I definitely underestimated some costs and cut it closer than I had hoped. I have some feelers out there to get some better prices on components.
