New to Buell/ a few problems.

Well just picked up a 99 X1 at the weekend, 10k miles and has sat for three years. Stuck a new battery in it and checked plugs but only really runs for any length of time on brake cleaner. Pump runs and pulled injectors and they spray. I suspect the fuel pump is gummy but need to get a fuel pressure gauge to verify. FI light goes out when running so that is a good sign. We build XB based choppers at work and have a few parts laying around but nothing I can use on the X1 :( Clean bike, SS2R pipe, k&n intake.

i cant help you but you wouldnt happen to have a shift linkage for an 07 XB12SS

Your on the right track. The fuel pump would be my guess also. deff check the pressure.

Still trying to locate a service manual, local dealer did search and found twelve dealers in the USA still have one in stock according to online inventory. I did come across a recall bulletin that mentioned 49 psi as pressure, I think that sounds about right IMO.

Nothing likes to run on 3 year old gas. Did you at least drain what was in there and try putting some new gas in? If you don't actually get everything pulled apart to clean you might just have to wait until it runs through a tank or two to flush everything. Likely that it'll never run perfect until you clean it out properly though.

It has fresh fuel, 110 octane sunoco that I wipped from my CB350 race bike, gas is less than a weak old. Old gas still burned (i tested it on the driveway) but I'm sure it was no good for engine use. Old owner swears it ran fine before he parked it.

I second what strmvt said, Seafoam the piss out of it! If that doesn't cure your problem, it's probably the fuel pump, or, it could be either the petcock, fuel line or fuel filter too.

Well fixed it. Checked fuel pressure, too low to even read on gauge (just enough to squirt out injectors and give me false hope though). Pump ran so suspected pressure regulator stuck, pulled regulator and noticed o-rings looked a little ragged, soaked reg in cartb cleaner for a bit and reinstalled. Still would not run but noticed fuel would shoot out of side of regulator area and not the bottom. Took back out (very easy and quick second time around) and replaced o-rings donated from a XB pump assy. The regulator looked the same too but wasn't sure of specs so took gamble on mine still being good. Reinstalled and fired right up, yay!!! [up]

Dale, thanks again for the heads up on fuel pressure. Very easy to check too. Rode it thirty miles and runs perfect. Still has original tires wih 6500 miles so really needs them asap. Still managed to sneak in a few small wheelies though!

Be careful running leaded race gas. It will ruin your oxygen sensor.

Well have about 150 miles on it now, enjoying a bunch. Waiting on front tire that should be here any day now. I noticed that it has a slight burple at 2400-2700 rpms, is tat normal? I had a similar cough(burple) while running 60-70mph steady, I rejetted it a little richer and that took care of the issue.

FI bike no jets.

Make sure you either have a Race ECM or have Race maps loaded onto your stock ECM. Otherwise you are runing too lean with the K&N and the V&H. I have the same exact set up on my '00 X1 and it runs a lot better with the Race maps. Just load the maps not the EEPROM. Contrary to what most people say, I've found the FI system in X1s bulletproof once you figure out what each sensor does. Also, these bikes need to be ridden regularly. The people with most problems are the ones with very low mileage or store their bikes for long periods.

Kalali, I do have a Carb, an 1998 S3, therefore Re-jetted. and I do realize that the X1's along with the 99 and up S3's and all XB's are fuel-injected. Fatten up the fuel map, same deal.

Got it. I take it you didn't like the Buell DDFI and converted to carb. I've seen a few folks who have gone that route with good results.

No, the '98 S3/S3T's were the last year for the carb setup, the S1's became the X1's the M2 retained the carb setup throughout 2002, when it was discontinued.
I did at one time have a dual carb setup on it, but it wouldn't pass our emission test here in Phoenix, so I had to take it off.

If mine would have had the FI I would of loved it.
Carbs are always a compromise, with FI Tweak it where you need it and leave the rest alone.

Well the bike was running great until last week. Got caught in major storm and 45 mins of stop/start traffic. A few miles down the road after the traffic the bike just quit. Turns out the fuel pump locked up. Not sure if it had anything to do with the fact it sat for a few years but I'm sure that didn't help. Scouring ebay right now, I miss my running buell! [sad]
