In the current issue of SuperStreet Bikes they offer a used XB12R buyers guide. At the bottom of the article it says something about a wire going to the ecu that you can remove to retard the timing to give a few more ponies. Has anybody heard of this?

I would stay away from retarding the timing on your bike. You only want to retard timing if you are going to boost the the bike with a turbo or Nitrous.

i believe if you retard the timing you would get less combustion efficiency right. less time to get full explosion b4 the piston is on its way down. retard would be the wrong way to get more you would get less

robk, they were talking about the "white wire cutting mod" in that article. You can find the ways to do it by searching on here. There is a post somewhere that explains it.

Buell has the timing advanced so far for emission purposes that it actually cuts power. In this case it benefits to retard the timing.

If memory serves me correctly that white wire mod only works for CA emissions bikes. Like BPG says, search the site for that thread to be sure.

works (http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Buell-Firebolt-XB12-XB9-2008-1125R/Buell-XB9-white-wire) here in europe too, MrOrange ;)

It also works on the 9 model only you can't do it to the 12 model. I will probably do this mod if it really does help. I didn't know they were that far advanced that retarding it would help. Usually advancing the timing gives you a gain in power.

So will it work on a 08 xb12r.I saw on the other post about this that it works on both the 12 and the 9 but on this one dans03 said it wont...

Might it be better to optimize ECM timing parameters on a dyno instead of just cutting a wire?

No Zombie it will not work on the 12r you have. It will only work on the 9 model. I got a write up at home that says it will only work on the 9 and not the 12.

Thruster you obviously don't know anything about Buell. There is no custom ecm that you can set the parameters yourself. It is the Buell Race ECM or the Doebeck Techlusion right now. Remus just starting making a FI controller too. But you can't just custom flash the stock ecm.

Direct Link allows you to be able to adjust them. Kind of an elaborate set up and hard to work with for most people.

I found that out after I posted that you can't adjust them. That was my bad.

Dear Dan and others,

Actually, our Buell ECUs are very similar to stand alone units (e.g. Performance Electronics). Using the proper software they can be completely custom tuned for timing and fuel. ECMSpy is an open source project by Buell enthusiasts from all over the world, based in Germany. The software is free. The (lengthy) tuning guide is free. The cable to connect from PC (or Palm device) can be built from available parts for about $30. The dyno- or seat of the pants-time is up to you.
