So I am looking to trying and making my own axle sliders and was wondering if anyone has had any exprience with this. Or if you already have axle sliders would you be able to provide some info on how it went together. By the looks of it, you just still a rod through your axle and put the sliders on. Is there more to it then this? Any info would be great.

Thanks

Someone over on Badweatherbikers.com had a whole writeup on DIY Axle sliders that were made out of Skateboard wheels I believe which were pretty cool.

I bought some from Dark Horse Moto (http://www.darkhorsemoto.com/homepage.html) and that is basically how they are built (threaded rod, through the axle, into the sliders). I got the one with the built in spool, so it can fit the stand i had, nice touch...

it's about the same as this:

it's very simple to make ;)

I bought these because everyone was saying how good they were and what not. I didn't want to spend $50 or more and sliders for this bike when I saw you could get them for less on the jap bikes. That is why I bought the eco sliders from them.

I am a little more then dissapointed in this whole thing. I thought there was going to be a little more to it then a long bolt with a couple of nuts and bolts. For $42 shipped, $34.95 before S/H, I was expecting a little more. Not to mention I didn't get the "thread locker goo" to make sure might my right one stays on.....

I wish someone had pictures of theres for others to see. So that is why i'm posting these pictures. For the person that is tossing around the idea of making their own or buying them. You can see that these things are not worth the money they are charging. No offense....
The delrin does have a better finish then what I would have been able to do.Yes, they will save your bike from far more worse fate then not having them. As you can see though. It doesn't take a brainiac to see how to make these. Just look at the pictures and you can figure it out from there. If you do have any questions then please ask. Nothing really special and definately not worth $42.

How much did it cost to make yours lefox? I'm probably gonna end up making my own for the front axle.

Since it is so easy, and I know someone with machining equipment, I think I'll make my own....does anyone know the length the internal bar needs to be as not to have a bunch of threaded bar hanging out the end? And what is the internal diameter of the axle? How long do they need to protrude from the axle to prevent fork/swingarm damage in the case of a spill? Hmm...I don't think I need any other dimensions, do I?

nothing...i had the parts laying around.
price is hard to say, cause i don't know how much anything costs on your side of the pond...

mine are just straight, there's no part in the axle itself, although that would make them a bit better fitting/looking.
the lenght of the bar depends on the protection your fitting. mine is about 4cm (1.6inch) and they were tested and worked [sad]

I just bought 1/2 inch allthread that real close to the I.D. of the axel then wrap some electrical tape down its lenght and its snug in the axel. Then drilled out some skateboard wheels, slid them on then a washer then a lock washer and a nut or a lock nut if you can find one and you wouldnt need that secound washer

I wonder if skateboard wheels would work. Hard Urethane.

In the unfortunate event that some of you have gone down, does anyone of you feel it is necessary to put axle sliders on the front axle? If you could share your opinion i would appreciate it, thanks.

rider, yes, do front and rear. if the bike even tips over the bottom of the fork leg will see damage :D

Ok Will do typeone. I have already done the rears with the hardest type of skateboard wheels i could find. They are not expensive Lsl sliders but they don't look bad at all. I'll use the other two wheels on the front. Also, for anyone else thinking about using skateboard wheels that are concerned with loosing paint from the wheels being against the swingarm i found some rubber washers that work perfect. You can find them most likely at Home Depot or local hardware stores.

Do the front, as I did not and had some rash when I went down.

Made mine out of a kids skateboard i found in Target - $12.
Wheels are pretty hard and i bought a 6' threaded rod from Lowes and a couple of washers and nuts.
I do need to modify them a bit better as i am using pressure from the tighten nuts to keep the wheels in place (just enough to hold them steady) but they haven't moved yet, nor is pressure affecting the wheel. Did both front and rear.
Not thought about it for a while as i am doing other mods but will get round to it soon.

What do these slide on?
Hopefully nothing, but if you go down, they save the swingarm & forks from the pavement. They're a precautionary measure you hope you never need. ;)

I know how important sliders are. But I wish they weren't so damn ugly. Someone needs to come up with a better design. I think XB frame pucks look way better than sliders poking out of your frame. Why not something more stealth for your axles. Just something to think about if you even care.

Let me try again. I think I didn't load my response properly. Anyway, I made a set front and rear from 6051 Aluminum 1-1/4" bar stock. I turned the pieces on a machinists lathe. pretty simply to do. I just drilled and tapped the interior fitting stub with a 5/16" thread (coarse, I think)and connected them with stainless steel threaded rod. I used nylon washers available from the hardware store and drilled them out to fit the interior stub. I custom made a six-sided washer to fit the interior of the hub where the nut would fit in. The removal nut is in your tool bag. Use it to scribe the shape on a nylon washer of at least 1/8" thickness, just center it over the right size hole, one you will have to drill out if need be. This centers the unit on the nut side. The other side is sized about right as it is smaller. I painted mine to match the bike color, I will anodized the next set I make. Here are some pix that show dimension and a 3d look aswell.

I have been thinking about getting thos sliders from dark horse moto and they look really cool too. For the rear sliders can you get them the same as the front without the extra space for the stands? I kind of like the front set better because it sits flush and doesnt stick out far but those back ones do!

I made my own out of some black delrin rod for the front and rear. Then I made some to replace the passenger brackets.

Trill are the spools just for the stands to have something to lift it on or for anything else? I agree though that more meat sounds like a good idea because I sometimes wonder if that little skinny front one will do much when u crash but they must work.

Also is that hole in the sliders for a water drain out?

I think the hole is so that you can stick a tool in there an tighten them.

Had my Tool Guy at work make these up on the lathe. Each is designed to fit in each specific axle to self center. And the outer diameters of each match the diameter of the axles outer width.

My darkhorsemotors sliders just paid for them selves this afternoon. The wife didn't notice my bike in the driveway and backed into it. luckily the only damage was a scuffed slider a broken footpeg and some ruber chunked out of the end of the throttle grip.

Went with the skateboard wheel idea for now. $16 at walmart. Took the wheels to a grinder, cut them down and they now sit flush on the swing arm. Have some more grinding for the front set. If you take the time to trim them down they dont look as goofy.Good sliders are too expensive. I would rather spend the money on gas.

just ordered some delrin rod with a 1" diameter off of ebay for $9 including shipping...should be enough for all 6 sliders and at a good price too!...did you just drill a 1/2 inch diameter hole on the inside of the slider for the rod to fit through? and a larger one on the outside to accomodate a place for the locking nut and washer to sit?

Just thought I would share a thought. I have used both Black Delrin and Black UHMW or Duralene for these parts. The best wearing is the UHMW. It was tough to find at first, but I found 2 guys that stock it in a bunch of diameters.
