View Full Version : Erik Buell Racing 1190 Typhon: a naked 1190RR

11-26-2010, 07:07 AM

The bike you see here is not an official product of Erik Buell Racing, but instead a concept created by the largest Buell race team in the world. Based on one of their EBR 1190RR-B racebikes, Pegasus Race Team wanted to explore what a naked version of the 185rwhp v-twin superbike could look and function like. Think of this as America’s Tuono, via Germany. The EBR 1190 Typhon is exclusive to Hell For Leather.

While I was visiting Pegasus at Biketoberfest Oschersleben and interviewing Erik Buell, one of the team’s members, Heiko Jessat, approached the team’s owner, Thomas Wanner, with an idea. Thinking that running a volunteer race team, winning the European Sound of Thunder championship and continuing the development of EBR race bikes wasn’t enough, Thomas gave the idea the go ahead and the bike you see here was assembled for the Essen Motor Show, which starts today.

“The idea with the Typhon is to combine new aerodynamic solutions like the Moto2-style covered lower fork legs and the air splitters on the upper frame edge with traditional EBR design elements,” explains Pegasus’s Jens Krüper. “One of the big challenges with the original bike’s layout is that there’s not much space between the front wheel and the engine when the forks are fully compressed. So this was one of the first focuses, working out a proper solution to nicely integrate the radiators, oil-cooler and ram air intakes.”

You can see the result of the team’s work in the neat integration of the cooling elements and splitters in an Aprilia Tuono-style cowling at the front of the bike. Note how the two radiators leave a gap in the middle to allow room for the front wheel under full compression. You can also see the ram air intake in white peaking out from under the triple clamp. Pegasus has more experience with the 1190RR than anyone else in the world and the knowledge they’ve gained can be seen in solutions like this. All the new parts, including the headlights, were made using a rapid prototype process. The parts were designed in CAD then brought to life by a 3D printer.

The rest of the 1190RR lends itself surprisingly well to becoming an attractive naked. Check out the skeletal rear subframe, the AST shock and traditional EBR engineering solutions like the fuel-in-frame and Zero Torsional Load front brake. The EBR 1190RR is the company’s flagship superbike racer. Its 1190cc Rotax v-twin puts out 185hp at the rear wheel at 11,500rpm and 93lb/ft at 9,500rpm. That engine is converted by hand at EBR from stock 1125 motors and the whole $44,900 bike weighs just 163kg/360lbs (dry). The 1190RR is forming the basis for the street-legal EBR 1190RS that will go on-sale this winter. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first 1190RR to ever be modified. Erik assisted in the Typhon’s development.

We’ll bring your more photos and information in the coming days.

11-26-2010, 07:22 AM
Thaloc---- i gave my brother in law your info , he loves white/ blue firebolts and promises to rock your world! And , that is an awsome looking bike but just a TAD expensive.

11-26-2010, 07:38 AM
Beautiful motorcycle. I often find myself just staring at my XB and I think it would be the same with this bike. I love the proportions and the balance of the body work.

11-26-2010, 07:52 AM
WALLSXB, You tell him I do package deals if he has any friends. And if white and blue bolts do it for him. we can work it into the scenario...lols

11-26-2010, 08:54 AM
Looks great. Put some taller handlebars on it and you'd be set. I wish that lower cowl had a little curve to it like the XBs do, but I know they're just going off of the shape of the radiators. Hopefully some of those other pictures get posted around at some point so I can see them without having to join HFL.

11-26-2010, 09:33 AM
This is a very exciting concept bike. Exotic American motorcycles in full series production is sort of a new thing. It'd be really cool if other American designers were inspired to join they fray.

Imagine a handful of different American brands, all of whom making super awesome bikes.

I need to work out some kind of annuity to fund a whole **** load of killer machines in my retirement.

11-26-2010, 09:49 AM
Thats pretty damn sexy

11-26-2010, 12:33 PM

11-26-2010, 08:51 PM

xb12scg for sale

11-26-2010, 09:23 PM
wow that is one sweet bike. I wonder where those digital gauges are from or if there costom?

such a sweet bike

11-26-2010, 11:50 PM
I have found out that after experiencing many different riding positions, the XB12Scg with a slightly lower bar and Select seat fits me perfectly. I also know that maybe someday I will want a new bike, so I have been looking at the latest naked superbikes, because the power my gixxer has I feel would be quite nice in the naked form, for which I have even considered "street-fightering" my gsxr750 just for fun.

Now, I see this bike, the Typhon. It is PERFECT. (ok, the front fender looks kinda funky) When the 1125CR came out, I was disappointed. Hell, I still haven't succumbed to the ugly pods, the headlights were kinda cool, but I still prefer the Lightning tail. This bike has a minimal tail, an attractive chopped fairing, and Lighting like dual headlights. scginmd, I am about to jizz in my pants, too!

Did Hell For Leather go to pay subscription recently or has it been that way for a long time?

Seems to me I was checking out free galleries not too long ago.

Now I can't see the whole thing because I'm a lecherous freeloader.

11-27-2010, 12:02 PM
They just switched like 2 weeks ago. $2 a mo. Iv been seeing alot of websites talking about doing this. Anyhow, they keep the full story up for anywhere from 12hrs to a day then take it down so you have to subscribe to see old stories, photo galleries, and comments.

It sounded like they were doing it so they could make their website their primary focus of energy instead of working, and it also must be a great source of funds. Think about it, HFL is pretty popular, I bet 10 thousand people subscribed almost right away.. Thas $20k a mo. I need to make a kick ass website, start chargin 2 bucks to subscribe

11-28-2010, 08:50 AM
found a few more pics of this sweet bike.

11-28-2010, 09:09 AM
One of the sexiest bikes I've ever seen. Sexiest American bike I've ever seen BY FAR. If it was produced and priced anywhere near my price range I'm sure I'd be selling everything I own to get one.

Holy crap I want this bike!

11-28-2010, 07:26 PM
thanks for the pics , just makes me want it even more now , plus its my new desktop wallpaper now. I wonder who is making any new fairings for the 1125 like this or anything other than the regular fairngs ??

11-28-2010, 07:43 PM
Well I have a new background!!! [up]

I really like how the pods are nonexistent. IMO the pods are what ruin the CR.

11-28-2010, 08:00 PM
Couldn't agree more! The CR pods are the equivalent of a big juicy wart on the tip of Megan Fox's nose , FUGLY!! The Pegasus bike looks great , it's modern, sleek, and is easy to recocgnize as a Buell . Those radiators would take a beating on the street though.

11-28-2010, 08:10 PM
Those radiators would take a beating on the street though.

Nothing a simple mesh grill couldn't fix, left raw or coated black. Or even some type of downward facing louvers to stop the upsray off the wheels.

11-28-2010, 09:59 PM
Here is a bigger pic that I found and tweaked the colors. This is my wallpaper, too!

11-28-2010, 10:14 PM
Nice +[up]

11-29-2010, 01:48 PM
Looks like they used the Barracuda tail and airbox. But I really love what they did with radiators and entire front end. Damn sexy!

Pic of the Barracuda for reference.

11-29-2010, 02:23 PM
i wish i could put those thin radiators on my 1125r and make it look more like that...i like my bike but i REALLY like the look of that much better

11-29-2010, 06:06 PM
I like how the kickstand slips into that molded area. Probably good for aerodynamics, gives me some ideas :-)

11-30-2010, 06:50 AM

11-30-2010, 10:16 AM
I like the way it has the dual round headlamp like the lightnings , to me that's the face of a Buell . Also really like that gauge cluster , that's is slick. Hell i like the whole thing ! It sucks seeing what could of been with the Barracuda , THANKS H-D !!!![mad]

11-30-2010, 11:00 AM
looks freakin sweet... however im not sure i would like to sit on it for very long.

11-30-2010, 11:14 AM
Agreed on the headlights WallsXB.

11-30-2010, 11:27 AM
Hahahahs slap a cut up gas mask on that bike and you have one awesome face!!! :)

11-30-2010, 12:16 PM
Have you seen the prototype for the RR....
Batman style....

11-30-2010, 12:34 PM
WTF!!! That is Fugly ! I hope that was built for a movie or something .[down]

11-30-2010, 08:33 PM
here are some more picture's of this prototype which is almost on the way to be streetlegal!!!

11-30-2010, 08:53 PM
Thanks amerikaner those pics on the second link are awesome!

11-30-2010, 10:07 PM
The typhoon is probably the ony bike that could tur me away from my XB.

The batman bike and the typhoon share the same builder. Pegasus race team.

12-01-2010, 12:28 AM
I want one of these made by buell, tootsweet.
right away, damn, comfort handling and motor,....

12-01-2010, 03:00 AM
Born of Mother Earth Gaia and Tartarus, he commands the fierce destructive winds of the world, which he used on land to destroy crops and in water to sink ships and drown sailors.

Typhon was the largest and most grotesque of all creatures that have ever lived. He was so tall that he towered over the highest mountains, and his head often brushed the stars. He was of human form down to his thighs, but he had huge snake coils instead of legs. When the coils were drawn out, they reached all the way to his head and let out a loud hissing.

A hundred dragons’ heads sprung from his shoulders and his body was covered with feathers. His body was winged: scruffy hair streamed on the wind from his head and cheeks; and fire flashed from his eyes.

He made sounds of a bull, lion, and dog, and has even been said to have made hissing sounds like a snake.

After the defeat of the Giants against the Olympian gods, Gaia brought forth Typhon, a super-Giant. He was larger and stronger that any of Earth's other children.

One time Typhon challenged the heavens and the gods were so frightened by Typhon's features that they fled to Egypt and disguised themselves among the wild. Only Athena stood her ground and accused the Great Zeus of cowardice.

Zeus had to defend Mount Olympus so he threw bolts of lightning at Typhon. Typhon fought back with force and cut off several of Zeus' muscles from his hands and feet, leaving him helpless.

Typhon had his sister, Delphyne, guard the muscles in a cave, but Hermes and Pan tricked her and the muscles were returned to Zeus. Zeus became even more distraught and threw more thunderbolts at Typhon. Typhon fled around the world and in Sicily Zeus threw Mount Etna on top of him, which crushed Typhon. It is said to this day that the flames and steam that rise from the volcano are from Typhon.

Typhon fathered a foul brood of other monsters on Echidna from pieces of his body torn by Zeus' stricking thunderbolts: the Chimaera, the Nemean Lion, Orthus (two-headed dog) and Cerberus, the Hydra of Lerne, Ladon (a sleepless dragon that guards the golden apples of the Hesperides garden), the Sphinx, Prometheus' eagle, and Phaea, the Crommyonian sow.

you may need to translate the page so you can read it there's several ways to do this, easiest is with
windows 7 /internet explorer 8 right click empty space on page, then click translate or translate with bing .

12-01-2010, 09:47 AM
I forgot to mention it is worth the translate and the read as it says towards the bottom !!!

The complete front will match available for XB models!
It is planned to offer bodyparts (also cooler!) as individual parts for 1125er models in the modular system!
To buy from 2011 at buell-parts.com

where the person that posted this info there is
unknown to me, maybe he has inside info(I hope), but like someone said before Erik says this is not the 1190rs , the 1190RS is not finished & has a ways to go.

12-01-2010, 10:26 AM
I can't even find the kickstand, can someone tell me what I'm missing?? haha

12-01-2010, 11:26 AM
I'm not sure how I missed this thread but I LOVE this bike!!!! Like the next natural progression for the XB Lightning!

12-01-2010, 12:17 PM
50dro------- i was thinking the same thing, it looks like the evolution of the Lightning , modernizing the current design. The more I look at it I wish Erik would announce it was the new 1190RS instead of a race teams project.

12-01-2010, 12:26 PM
I can't even find the kickstand, can someone tell me what I'm missing?? haha

Nevermind, you were talking about the yellow bike above, not the typhon on the first page.

12-01-2010, 02:08 PM
this bike is sweeeeeet!

p.s. what the heck is a "m-unit" ?

12-01-2010, 03:37 PM
Anyone want to buy a used xb lightning. I want this bike nay I need this bike.

12-06-2010, 04:23 PM
I want it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

12-08-2010, 07:14 PM
If they can manage to move forward with the 1190RS and the Typhon(which r both friggin awesome bikes) I hope they build something to the tune of a Ulysses with an 1190 in it. Talk About a do all monster of a bike. At least that way when i was ready 4 a new bike there'd actually b some thin better than my old one.

12-10-2010, 01:27 AM
am i the only one that hates those 2 headlights? put the cr headlight on it it looks so mean

12-10-2010, 04:51 AM
Those 2 headlights are what gives it the Buell identity. That style goes back to 03 with the Lightning models . The CR light looks nice but IMO it lacks identity. It's kinda like a Rolls Royce or BMW grille , those 2 lights give it that Buell stamp. [smirk]

12-18-2010, 11:58 PM
"Typhon" (Greek God etc etc).
Some vids to savour (in English):

12-19-2010, 12:11 PM
Hurry up eric I want one of these.look real nice parked next to my lighting :D

12-19-2010, 05:20 PM
Typhoon = a bike I'd ****.

12-19-2010, 05:24 PM
Lol.... Typhon.... Sorry

12-25-2010, 04:15 AM
Heheh... already ready treating her like another one nighter hey. :D

05-22-2011, 08:01 AM
damn i just posted about this because i found it online and was amazed lol its awesome. and i look stupid but oh well. I want this!!!

05-22-2011, 08:18 AM
i really like that bike too.if erik had hooked up with a company other than hd that might be what my bike looks like now

05-22-2011, 08:36 AM
THAT BIKE NEEDS TO GO INTO MASS PRODUCTION!!! i'd love to see it in the mags up against the aprilia's and dookies. The CR already held it's ground in every comparo and even won a few. That would K.O. the competition.

05-22-2011, 08:41 AM
not to mention make every girl within 1000 miles forget her name, its basicity the personification of sex appeal .

and with all the specs as the race model.... 185 rw hp and redonkules torque on a naked bike, this is the best example out there of what bike makers can do now!

I know Mr Buell is to smart to see a concept like this go to waste. its only a matter of time. hell there is already an EBR 1190RR coming down the pipe. this will be here soon.

05-22-2011, 08:40 PM
hey Cheezits ,
dont worry everyone gets out of the loop every once and a while !!:D:D dont worry here is where to get the parts to make a 1125 into the Typhoon... and more buell OEM & aftermarket parts. I copied this below from my post on
Buell-Clothing--Parts-List---Foreign--Domestic (http://www.buellxb.com/Buells-for-Sale/Buell-Parts-for-Sale/Buell-Clothing--Parts-List---Foreign--Domestic) thread..

08-13-2012, 08:27 PM
now that is a sick bike...
is anyone know what "the Man" think about it?

I definitely would put my name on the waiting list right now...
