This is a cross post that I was asked to post here on BuellXb so the times and dates will be a little off as the original thread is close to a year old.

The bars, air bottle clamp, shift light (Dyna Shift Minder) and Engine Kill Module. Air over electric shifter has to be picked up still.

For whatever reason I was sent an 18" strut! That would not work as it is entirely way to long and has the wrong ends on top of that. I grabbed a piece of stainless and threaded both ends (left and right hand threads). Added a notch in the middle for a 1/2" wrench. This will allow me to adjust the strut without having to remove it from the bike.

For the top and bottom of the strut I used rod ends. Because of this I had to make up the extra space between the shock mount up top.

The left side bottom bar as you could see made contact with the swing arm "as is".

The front end limiting straps did not show up so I don't have the bars adjusted exactly where I want them yet. This is close. My target measurement will be 1 1/2" with the font end straped down. As they are now, they work. I tried a few soft 3-4k launches and the bike just wanted to squirt out from under me. I got tire shake a few time as I wasn't heating up the tire at all.

Shock length compared to strut length.

I may cut my DHM sliders down so they mount directly to the wheelie bar mounts. This would save on the changeover time.

I have the bars on and the front end strapped....and it works. It has been said that living in my area you can Drag Race everyday but Monday if your willing to travel and that is true. I made it to the track for some test runs.

Let me start by saying I'm no pro on a bike nor in car however I have a lot more experience in the car and zero on the bike. I am rusty for sure! I made 10 passes on the bike and honestly could have made more, I was hot in my leathers. I went to the track solo so I have no pics but I do have a stack of time slips.

The numbers and some info.

1st pass, 2nd slowest of the night. Front end strapped a little to tight for my liking. Left at 6k or close. With no one watching I could not tell what the bike was doing so I just had fun! Stock street tire pressure.

The numbers tell me I left A LOT on the track. Between hitting the limiter more times than not and clutch shifting tells me I need to get the air shifter installed! My best MPH tells me I should be a hi 9. I definitely need to leave harder. I can't tell if I'm spinning or riding the clutch. I'll take my buddy John with me to help me get a idea what is going on.

The light is on the left side of the fairing. During mockup it fit fine, during final installation it is placing a little pressure on the fairing. I'm going to look and see if I can flip the light and still use the same mounting holes. If not I'll just lower it a 1/4". The light is bright for sure!

Made it to the track again on Friday. The humidity was hi to say the least. It is tough burning water over air! I did not best my ET however I was very close to my PB and my MPH picked up. I'm still foot shifting and still grabbing the clutch running down the track, hard habit to break. I ran my buddy on a 06 GSXR 1000 11 times! I'm 10-1.
We both were launching at 8k plus. If I hesitated at all he was all over me with that 1000. He regularly "treed" me on the Pro tree but I'd make it up within 60' and hold the lead from there on out. Needless to say we had a blast as there was hardly anyone at the track so it was like a $25 private track rental.

I worked on the bike a little last night. I spent some time mounting the piston for the air shifter. Currently there isn't an off the shelf mounting kit for these bikes. What I came up with I feel should work just fine, we'll see.

I made a paper template first than transfered it over to my piece of 1/2" aluminum. If I had something thinner here I probably would have used that instead as 1/2" is overkill.

Next up was fitting the piston to the shifter arm. The arm is slightly wider than the clevis opening. I quick trip to the table sander knocked the finish off of the shifter and allowed the clevis to slide over.

A quick mock up shows where I need to trim my bracket some, more for aesthetics than anything else. I'm going to machine a small pocket in the bracket for the piston to sit in. This will help with the angle at which the piston sits. I gave a little pull on the shifter arm to pull it away from the bike to also help with alignment. The range of motion feels smooth.

I finished the air piston bracket this afternoon. Overall I'm happy with it. When I make a batch of them I'm going to make a couple of small changes to the design.

I machined a couple of pockets for the bolts to sit in. This keeps the heads from sticking out to far. Just for grins I ran a bit around the edge of the bracket just so it didn't look like a simple flat piece of bar stock. I also machined a pocket for the air piston to sit in. I would enlarge this area a little on the next one. The piston mount via drilled and tapped hole. I went with a 1/4"x28 fine thread to get as many threads as possible in the aluminum.

Here is a view of the air shifter from the seat. Despite the way it looks it does not protrude out enough to bother your foot. Than again it unbolts in about a minute so removal would not be tough either.

Next up was the mounting of the air bottle. I choose to mount it on the wheelie bars as opposed to the bike. This way when I remove the bars the air goes with it. I may want to rethink that! The bottle bracket will get clamped to the wheelie bar support bracket.

One of the two blunders of the night. I staged the bike at around 9k and I must have given it more throttle to hit 10.5K and the air shifter hit placing the bike in second, the light changed and I left in second. I didn't have my foot on the shifter so there was no way I could have shifted back into 1st. Oh well a 9k launch in 2nd gear. The 60' was horrible but the overall mph was decent.

went to the track again Wednesday. It was Hot as Hell again. Enough so that I had sweat dripping out of my helmet. I made ten runs and called it a night. My times were nothing to brag about as both ET and MPH were down. All in all my runs were relatively consistent. The V-Twin simply did not like the heat. I don't ever recall hearing my fans run so much. They ran so often that my battery light flickered a few times on start up. I found myself watching the IC and battery voltage more so than ever before. With 46 runs on my street Dunlop it is officially toast. Toward the end of the night it simply was not hooking. I have no complaints with how the tire performed overall for not being a drag tire.

The 27 will give me stock R gearing while the 26 will put me in between the R and CR gearing and the 25 will get me real close to the CR gearing. I'll update the thread when I start machining.

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z238/mlcorrell/2008%20Buell%201125R/344.jpg

As you can see there is a difference in diameter from the original center hub and the pulley center hole. There is also a height difference from the mounting flange on the pulley stock to the original cut up piece of compensating sprocket.

The aluminum piece on top is the belt retaining ring. It will get drilled along with the flange which also gets tapped and drilled for 7/16" dowl pins. So I'll have 3 bolts holding the assembly together as well as 3 dowl pins to drive the pulley.

The new assembly with the 27 tooth sprocket weighed in at 2 pounds 6 ounces. That is 2 pounds 8 ounces lighter than stock. What affect do you think that will have on the motor spooling up? Rotating mass!

I machined all three pulleys so I can maintain stock gearing as well as dropping two teeth in the front. I may consider machining one more pulley, a 28 tooth. This may help with some top end for the MPH runs.

27/70 = 2.59 to 1 Stock R gearing
26/70 = 2.69 to 1 (4% change) 1 down on trans sprocket
25/70 = 2.8 to 1 (8.3% change) 2 down on trans sprocket

After drilling and pinning the the hub next up is seeing how the belt and tensioner will take these changes. If there isn't enough movement on the tensioner to take up the two tooth change I may make a slightly larger idler pulley.

My intentions are to replace the idler pulley with a tensioner pulley. I have some preliminary belt tension readings from the stock set up and now I'm trying to convert them over to what the tensioner industry uses.

As a quick test I bolted a manual XB chain adjuster to the bike (with the sprocket removed). That will definitely take the slack up. Now it is a matter of getting the tension correct with either an elastomer or spring type self adjuster. For my application a manual adjuster is just fine as my suspension is strutted for drag racing hence no swing arm travel. However I would like something that will adjust on its own for the various pulley sizes while maintaining sufficient tension.

I hit the track again last night. While it was still humid it was not nearly as hot as it has been.

I made 5 passes, 4 were 10.3's and 1 11.4 where I spun off of the line and the bike shifted into 2nd gear.

60' ET MPH
1.682 10.336 128.030
1.686 10.318 133.610
1.692 10.398 131.770
1.671 10.357 125.960
2.005 11.490 129.140

The bike felt good with the direct drive front sprocket. I had my tire pressure high as a starting point. I did expierence some tire spin so I will start dropping pressure to find what the tire/track likes. Something new, the bike was shifting into 5th at the line. This is a first as I would catch 4th before the traps and run through the lights with some RPM left. I'm considering lowering the front a little. I have to read up on this some however I noticed that the fast bikes were slammed.

I hit the track again tonight. I'm getting better a little at a time. I did experience a little tire spin from time to time. As the night went on I did drop the tire pressure some.

On one particular run the bike launched, spun, hooked and than shifted into second. It shifted so hard that the air box came up and slammed me in the chest knocking a little wind out of me. I was laughing like a little kid when it happened, that was cool.

I think with some time spent setting the bike up, the little things, my high 9 with a street tune is possible. I say that purely based on my MPH. That MPH is a 9.7/9.8. That tells me I'm leaving a lot at the starting line between my 60' numbers and my 660' numbers. So now I have to figure out how to improve those numbers. I will start with a front tire change, simply because it is toast. Once a good tire is on the bike I'll put some air to the tire to try and limit rolling resistance. Next up is lowering my shift points. Looking at my dyno sheet the bike goes linear at 10k to 10.5k. I'm shifting at 10.5k. Knocking it down to say 10.2 k may save with wasting time running up in the rpms with no power gain as well as dropping me back into the torque after the shift. I also HAVE to concentrate on going to WOT immediately, sometimes I don't think I do this quick enough. This is where the two stage limiter will help.

I'll get this bike in the nines on a street tune with street exhaust before the summer is over. Than it will get a race tune and possibly a race exhaust, mid 9's is the goal. From there maybe a little nitrous to see how low in the 9's the bike will go.

One run I just aborted and the other I foot shifted to the tune of a 10.338. With that fixed my times were dropping. I was concentrating of going full throttle as soon as I could. I had my shifter set at 9500 tonight, a full one thousand lower than where I have been running it. My next time out I'll try the shifter with a little less/more RPM's.

I lowered the bars a little tonight. They were a tad high from where I originally set them. I only recall the bike acting weird once tonight. It was launching like a SOB tonight turning 1.51-1.52 60' times. There may be a little more in there..............

I received my product of choice this week so I decided to give it a shot and insulate the frame in an attempt to cut down on the heat transferred to the frame from the motor. I used the 3/16 material from DEI rated to 1750 degrees. While it claims to be 3/16 of an inch thick I don't think so. The entire piece I ordered 21"x24" weighed in at 1 pound exactly. I used about half of the sheet adding a half pound to the bike. While cutting the material for the frame I traced the patten onto cardboard so I have a template to cut pieces for my street bike. I'm a little curious if I'll be able to install it with the motor in place. If not I'll wait until it is valve adjustment time.

The material is self adhesive and while it sticks fast fairly decent there is a little ability to manipulate it to where you need it.

I made my initial contact with a CP Piston rep today in an attempt to get some parts ordered. Michael at EBR turned me onto CP as they (EBR) predominately carry road race geared parts. I dealt with a Terry Stewart who is a CP distributor and a Nitro drag racer, cool!

Mike1125 had given me the heads up in regards to having to order 4 pistons when ordering custom pistons. So at this time I'm looking to see if I can go bigger than the 3 MM overbore (1190) that the road race guys are limited to. In the area 1250cc would be fine if doable.

CP is also Carillo rods so I am looking to change the rods also. Erik himself told me to at least change the rod bolts.

Terry has done cam work on the 1125's so I'll wait to see what he has to offer as well as what they are going to run me.

I'm hoping to get some numbers on pricing here shortly as well as availability (sounds like everything is 6-8 weeks for custom). I'm OK with the time frame at this point as this stuff isn't on the shelf anywhere and what is is for the street or road racers.

I picked up some of the bodywork I'm going to use and started test fitting it. I originally was going to use a stock tail as I wanted to be able to gain access to my electronics. I have since given thought to that and I'm going to mount them in the nose where the headlights use to sit.

I went with a Flexi-Glass Super-bike tail section with integrated seat pan and their ultra light nose. I also picked up a front fender and under-tail but decided to not use them.

OK I believe I have come up with my bore size of choice. As of now I'm going to go with a 4.270" bore which will net me close to a 1250 CC displacement (1247). This bore size will leave me plenty of wall thickness on both the thrust and non thrust side as well as the skirt. By going this way I won't have to use epoxy or block fill to reinforce the areas that may be a little close to my minimum clearances that I desire.

I CC'd the heads tonight (non scientific way) and came up with 26.4 Combustion Chamber volume, small!

The rods are complete! Waiting on the pistons and rings still. The heads are on their way to be ported as well as the cylinders are en-route to get bored.

I have my contact info for Cometic to get my gaskets. I have a call into ARP for head bolts. The next thing is cams, I have multiple calls into EBR with not a single return call so I'm going to contact a cam company I know that has already cut some Rotax cams.

Once I get the rods and pistons I can balance the rotating assembly and start assembling. I still lack an exhaust but have made some calls to see what I can come up with. While I know I need a good exhaust I'm not to worried about it as an off the shelf complete system will be better than what I currently have.

Received an email the other day that the rods and pistons are done. Now its time for me to split the cases and get the crank ready to balance. The heads and cylinders should be at their locations Monday. The cylinders are going to take 2 weeks according to Millenium and I'd guess the heads will take just as long if not longer.

I spoke with Dan from Crower Performance (Son of Crower Cams) today. He was excited to work on a drag bike project as to date it has all been street and road race stuff for him. I boxed my cam cores up and they are off to him tomorrow. Once he receives them he'll give me a call and we'll discuss what the 1250 will like cam wise.

It looks like I'm down to gaskets, seals, bearings etc. and head studs as far as the hard parts go. Assembly and tuning will be a joy. The local guys don't want to touch the race ECM so I may have to take a run to EBR in Wisconsin to get this thing tuned. It sure is a little hard to believe someone closer can't tune using the EBR Race tuner. The local guys want to install Power Commander crap, I don't think so!

Here are the new rods, pistons and crank ready to go for balancing.

I'm keeping it moving.

The rotating assembly was dropped off for balancing this morning.

This afternoon I ordered my head gaskets from Ashley at Cometic. I had to go with copper gaskets due to the bore size as the multi layer gaskets didn't have enough room for the crush ring.

I was finally able to order some parts from EBR. I ordered a set of ARP head studs as they stock them.

Aside from assembly I'm down to ordering a race exhaust system.

Gaskets....

The complete gasket kit is a Buell part number that I picked up from ST. Paul HD. The head gaskets are from Cometic. As you can see they are copper. I ordered two different sizes as I wasn't exactly sure what I will need. Since there is very little gasket surface from the cylinder to the cam chain chest I'm going to O-ring the heads to help insure the seal. Originally I was going to O-ring the cylinder however that would be cutting into an already thin wall. So the heads make more sense (my first drag car motor was done this way).

So I get the cases cleaned and they are in front of the heater drying. I go to pick them up to run some air pressure over them and on the floor is a spring. Uh oh where did it come from? I spent and hour and a half trying to find where this spring came from. I did not want to proceed without knowing this as I didn't easily spot it in the manual or parts breakdown. Cleaning the cases must have removed the oil film holding the spring in and allowed it to drop out on the floor.

The crank installation is straight forward. Pay attention to crank orientation and which holes you have the rods in. While connecting the two case halves you have a few ends from the trans that have to get guided through some holes. A few taps from my hand and they fit right together. I ran the eight gazillion case bolts in with my 18 volt Dewalt and than torqued them from there.

Heads,
42mm TI Intake valves
35.4MM TI Exhaust valves
Beryllium Copper Seats
Del West bronze guides
"Stage 3" port work
.010" milled surface

With a .032 head gasket I'm looking at 15.4 to 1 compression.
With a .043 head gasket I'm looking at 14.75 to 1 compression.

My valve to piston clearance will determine which head gasket I go with (silly puddy time).

Looks like I'm down to the pipe as far as parts go that I'm aware of. I'm sure there will be something I forgot along the way. I still have body work to sort out also.

I was finally able to get a few moments to work on the heads this morning. The objective was to add a receiver groove for an "O-ring" seal. The "O-ring" is simple MIG wire. Since the cylinder wall thickness is thin to start with the receiver groove will be cut in the head as opposed to the cylinder. By adding the "O-ring" this will help with sealing the cylinder to the head.

Here are a few shots of the heads after they came back from Revolution.

Once the head and cutting tool were set up next up was to locate where the "O-ring" groove was going to be cut. The gasket bore diameter, cylinder wall thickness, wire thickness and head gasket thickness all determined where and how deep the groove gets cut.

I worked on the bike a little this morning. After cleaning the lift off which obviously had become a storage bench I was good to go. I started out with just setting the parts up and re-familiarizing myself with them. Next up was file fitting the rings. CP has me running the rings a little looser than the stock rings. I have a ring set which I have no idea where they go. I called Terry from CP and he stated they are a filler ring of sorts to go under the oil pack. The measurements didn't seem right however I'll go back out and double check. From there I'll call CP Tech tomorrow. I forgot that I have to assemble the heads also. So if I can't figure out the rings I'll start on the heads.

I now have the rings all file fitted and on the pistons. Next up was installing the pistons on the rods. I do have the piston clip installer but for the life of me I sure can't figure out how it is suppose to work. So I did it the old fashioned way, with my fingers and a small blade screw driver. 8, eight is the number of times I dropped one clip down in the motor before I developed a "system" to install the clips. I had intentions of installing the cylinders when I realized I don't have a ring compressor that will work on this bike. I ordered one that I should have here sometime next week.

I'll install and lap the valves myself. It isn't tough at all with the correct tools. ;)

Nothing bad has happened. Life has gotten in the way, super bust with work which is a good thing.

There is talk of our local track closing so that has put a damper on finishing the bike.

I did pick up "another" Buell, this one an 09 1125CR. I want to turn it into a little more of a sport touring bike (windshield, bags, all the electronics).

I have someone interested in the drag bike parts so I have to sit down and put a price tag on them to see how interested they are.

Buell 1125 Race Motor

1250CC
Millenium Technologies Cylinders, Stripped, Overbore, Nocosil coat, diamond hone
CP 4.275" domed pistons, pins, wire locks and rings
Carillo Rods
ARP rod bolts
ARP/EBR Head studs, washer and nuts
Revolution Stage 3 head porting
.010" milled surface
Heads are O-ringed for lock-wire
Del West/EBR 42MM Titanium Intake valves, 35.4MM Titanium Exhaust valves
Del West/EBR Springs
Del West/EBR Bronze guides
Beryllium Copper seats
Crower Performance Drag Race Cams
Balanced and welded crank
Cometic head gaskets
Buell gasket kit

Bottom end of the motor is assembled. The top end will have to be finished up, the parts are all here.

$6500.00 plus shipping. I know this is more then some paid for their complete stock motorcycle. Then again the heads alone are close to what an 1125 was selling for during the "Fire sale". This IS NOT a street motor. This is for racing. Current cam selection is a drag race cam, with a different cam choice you could have a road race motor.

My local drag strip has closed their doors and I have no desire to travel to race, so I'm selling my drag race stuff.

haha, so depressing to get through all the posts and then your selling at the end. Oh well, can understand why your not continuing with the build, fun to read the build though. GLWS.

Do you have the dementions of the wheeliebar... I'm looking for the same set up also have you ran with a strut and shock.. which is better.. mind you I'm just throwing a wheelie bar on and going to the local 1/8.. this isn't a drag bike by any means

I'm on the fence in regards to just finishing the motor......

Hey Puzzled, I was gonna start using mine more at the 1/4 mile track but unfortunately I had my 'off-roading accident' with the R and that went out the window. Im left with the 2009 CR and its still in shop waiting on parts for the charging issue. Im gonna do the EBR rotor mod, re-wire stator with 'Rick's', and maybe the MOSFET regulator that roadstercycle puts out. If I end up keeping it, I will try and do the EBR exhaust and ECM and then just ride it like I stole it. (Hopefully)

So I want to know what's going on with the motor and bike? I would be interested in that motor but I would need a different cam.

Yep, sweet motor for sure but I really don't want to get into Buell motors That Much. Maybe if I was just gonna use it on the track.
