I have been running royal purple synthetic in my engine for a while now and decided to put it in my primary/trans. all I can say is WOW, the shifting CLUNK turned into a light click and neutral is always where it should be. everyone should go out and do this today!!!

Any synthetic engine oil can be used as transmission oil in a Buell.

research I did showed royal purple to be the best for protection + power, 2nd was amsoil. all you have to do is pull the plug under the primary and add 1qt, its a shame I waited 5 years to do this 15min job! I use 20w50 syn3 in both holes.

Royal Purple is probably the best i've found. Most of the Chain stores dont carry it ( at least by me ). I get it from a small local auto store.

I used BelRay primary oil and it didn't work as good as I was hoping it would. I will be switching over to Royal Purple for my next change. When you are changing your oil don't forget the new o-ring gasket for the primary and the swingarm!!!

Wet clutches in transmissions require a very specific friction coefficient. How sure are you that these oils you guys are using meet that specific requirement?

The viscosity between the Formula + stuff they say to put in there is a lot higher than the Syn3 engine oil. I don't think it would be a good idea to put other kinds of fluid in there other than what they call for.

For your motor oil I would say go ahead and run what you want, just don't put in a different kind every oil change.

Heck yeah...I've been running Royal Purple in my Wrangler for a few years..great..smooths out everything.

Royal Purple is the Chuck Norris of Motor Oil...

Bordsnbikes
07-14-2008, 09:47 PM
Haha well put Fido. But what about in the trans, does it meet the same friction coefficient? Same with the Syn3?

That I don't know, best bet would be to ask someone that would, call Royal Purple...The Company, not chuck norris.[cool]

Haha damn, I already had Chuck on the phone.

So no one knows how compatible these fluids are? BPG, Lefox, you two seem to be some of the most knowledgeable. Any ideas? Tin Man, you said any Synthetic oil can be used, how sure are you? I really like the idea of getting rid of that clunk when shifting, but not at the expense of my clutch material or worse, transmission life.

Thaloc
07-23-2008, 03:27 PM
That clunk reminds me im on an american bike, not a japanese wind-up toy. (Although my FZR had a clunky tranny also)

Bordsnbikes
07-23-2008, 04:10 PM
Yeah but when things clunk it's harder on them. The point however, is about the compatibility of the fluid with the tranny.

Thaloc
07-23-2008, 04:20 PM
Synchromax is what Royal Purple advises for tranny fluid.

For a Buell? Or in general?

For "Manual" transmissions.

sadly we can't get royal purple...so i don't know the specifics :o

but according to the site:

Max-Cycle is specifically formulated to significantly improve motorcycle, ATV and snowmobile engine (and transmission) performance. It’s recommended for use in both air-cooled and liquid-cooled 4-cycle engines and it’s compatible with wet-clutch transmissions.

FIDOSOL

Hmm, why can't you get it LeFox? No shipping to Belgium?

LeFox
07-23-2008, 10:35 PM
shipping maybe, but then i'll pay alot more on taxes. i can go for an alternative with about the same quality for a cheaper price. ;)

FIDOSOL

Taxes, that sucks, kinda why we fought england in the first place...Maybe you could join us...take a stand against Belgium/EU...lol j/k

Bordsnbikes

Yeah I read the site, but that just seems very broadform.

I know when your talking about an automatic transmission, which uses wet clutchs like we have in our bikes, the friction coeficient is very important. If you have the wrong one is makes your clutches slip and eats them up, or grab to hard/fast and thats really hard on the whole unit.

I am gonna call them tomorrow and get all technical on that ass. I'll let you guys know what comes of it.

The guy at the harley dealer recomends the stuff, but he might get spiffed from the company, all I know is it's been in for 10 days and I still love it, when a bike runs this good I dont see any reason to worry about reliability.

changed over to the purple stuff today all i can say is there is a drastic radiant temp reduction from just the oil.

I know this thread is old but figured I would throw my 2 cents into the mix. Royal Purple Engine/Trans Oil (http://www.royalpurple.com/rp-which-oil-mc.html)

Going to pick it up today...so I'll let ya'll know in a day or so, keep in mind that I will be going from stock fluids. So should be quite a change.

FIDOSOL

Okay so I got all the fluids and am doing this tomorrow, I had to wait until freakin' 1830 to pick up my Royal Purple from Oreilly's and nobody else even had it, had to have it trucked up from Louisville, no extra charge though.

Hi,

Thought i'd give this a go as well. Have managed to find dealers in the UK. Royal purples web-site recommends the following:

Harley Davidson Sportster and Buell Engine Max-Cycle 20W50

Harley Davidson Sportster and Buell Transmissions Max-Cycle 10W30

You are "special" Special K, it's cool though I call my daughter (6mnths on the 27th) my little special ed monster, she does the cutest most retarded stuff sometimes...

I did switch out to the 20w50 Royal Purple oil today. I noticed a bit more engine noise, but fan seems not to kick on too bad, old oil was diirrrtttyyyy... Did ya'll know that Oreilly's will take your old oil? Did notice it seemed to tach up a bit quicker than before could be my imagination yet. When changing the transmission fluid do you have to change out the primary cover gasket thingy? Didn't want to crack into it until I knew for sure. Thanks Ya'll

My gasket came off perfectly intact and could have been reused if you are careful. I fouled a plug the day before and bought a gasket while I was at the dealership though.

FIDOSOL

Does Oreilly's or Autozone carry the gasket? I am replacing my plugs with iridiums today...

i just switched from harley brand non-synthetic to royal purple synthetic in both holes yesterday and i have noticed immediate power results.

the bike revs up much quicker and performs better at higher rpms. i am amazed at what a difference in engine performance can come from just oil.

the bike is more responsive and eager to pop up the front wheel. it feels like my engine was freed up. thank god for this website and the people who share information on it because without it would have been thinking Harley brand is the best for the buell.

absolutely recommend royal purple.
