I just thought I would post a walk-through of my XBR top triple conversion for my XBS. I looked everywhere for a step by step for this mod, and got some good leads, but nothing that explained it all. So here it is for those who might want to do this.

Things you'll need:
Dremmel
Drill
Rubber mallet
3 rivet-nuts size 5/16
JB weld

Step 1:
Cut ignition loop off XBR top tripple

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154454_L.jpg
Smooth out cuts with grinding/sanding bits
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154440_L.jpg

Step 2:
Remove windscreen, lights, ignition, modules etc...
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154429_L.jpg
Take XBR triple and place over XBS triple to line up holes that you will be drilling. With a ruler line up middle hole placement and mark a dot on top triple in center.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154415_L.jpg
Then measure distance and make dots on the two sides of center dot.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154404_L.jpg
After you have made your marks drill holes and insert 5/16 rivet-nuts.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154554_L.jpg
Remove old top triple. You will probably need to give it some love taps with a rubber mallet.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154347_L.jpg
Use JB weld to glue rivet-nuts into the triple. And let it fully harden over night.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154328_L.jpg

Step 3:
Cut notches out of modules so clip-ons will have clearance. Just try to bolt them back up to see where cuts are needed.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154317_L.jpg

Bolt ignition and modules back to triple and drill hole for clutch cable.http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154303_L.jpg

Now put front end back together.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154236_L.jpg
While I was putting my blinkers on I made them shorter by putting the extension on the inside of the modules. I hate those long blinkers.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154221_L.jpg
Replace windshield and your done.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154207_L.jpg
Except for grinding down your key.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154031_L.jpg
You need to do this to make it fit.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154012_L.jpg

I used spacers to push out my modules a little so stock master cylinder would fit.
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154126_L.jpg
As soon as I get an XBRR master cylinder I'll remove them.

Before.http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1864_20080803154519_L.jpg

After.

I hope this helps anyone who is interested in doing this.:D

Oh yeah, how do you like the feel compared to stock? I think I would have to ride an R before attempting this mod.

Thanks for the good rep blackedout I appreciate that. To answer your question I am really happy with it! Cornering is a lot better and on the freeway at high speeds I feel more stable. Being in a more aggressive position makes the little cosmetic windshield feel like it's doing something.:D

I love my Bikini fairing, keeps me from driving too much faster than I should... Any idea how this compares to the other top triple mods?

The only other clip-on style mod I can think of would be the Crossroads bars. Which are in the same position but a couple of inches taller due to being bolted to the stock handlebar clamp. I was really surprised when I decided to do this to find out that the aftermarket for XB bars is pretty slim.

Hi Shilo,

what a work you've been doing- puhh!
Excuse me for saying this; - had it not been easier to just buy either the Crossroads Performance - 7 degree (steeper) or the 0 degree bars directly?
I think the 0 degree is very nice. That voids all modification as it works as bolt on.

I agree with you sin it would have been much easier but I really like the factory look of the XBR clip-ons. I was going to go the crossroads route but ended up buying the XBR triple for $50 and you can't beat that. Plus this is a way easier mod than I expected. If I ever want to go back to stock all I will need is new modules $80 total plus the $50 for the triple. That is still way less money than the crossroads. Regardless of the money factor it was a lot of fun to do, I love tinkering with stuff.:D

I'd really like to do this eventually too. I like to keep all of my original parts in original shape though, so I'll probably have to wait until I can find those side pieces for the flyscreen to cut up, as well as the top triple.

What's the situation with the xbrr master cylinder? Does it just swap in with all the xb parts without having to replace anything else(aside from the brake fluid)? I'm currently looking for a new front end to replace my short stuff with the normal length forks, and I'm hoping when I find the right set I can get the top triple with them.

Alien those bars look good but you should find some aluminum bar that just fits inside the part of your handlebars that is clamped and jbweld it in there. Your bars will probably be ok, but the thought if the bars being crimped and the whole thing coming loose while you're riding scares me a little.

I finally have an xbr top triple in the mail so I can do this conversion! I need to find the actual clipons. I'm thinking about replacing my headlight and flyscreen with one from an M2, so I may just hold off on the whole thing until then. I don't really want to cut up the side pieces to my flyscreen.

I will be doing this mod soon and have all the pieces so i wont be using any of my stock parts but i am unclear about the cutting of the modules. I thought i just needed to drill a hole for the clutch cable in the L side module. and for that could i just make a bracket that that extends the modules out about 1 1/2 inches from triple clamp. any feedback on this mod would be great!

Aside from the clutch cable you also need to cut it so the front of the new triple clamp isn't hitting it. If you move your modules out far enough you might not have to do that at all. If you get it to work with just spacers you should definitely post up some pictures. If it works without cutting/drilling I'd probably do the conversion on mine before I found the M2 front end I was looking for.

I'll have to try to find some pictures of what I did with the old handlebars on my GS500. I had a pair of clipons that were almost an inch too short fo the controls and grips so I took some steel bicycle handlebars and cut off 2 pieces the same length off the ends. Then I got a hollow steel rod from home depot and just ground it down slightly so it would fit into the handlebar tubes. I put some JBweld on it and wedged it into the bars lightly with a hammer and then put the extension piece on it. It's pretty sturdy, but isn't on a weight bearing part of the handlebar anyway. It was pretty much for the last half inch of grip and to hold bar ends.

You could do something similar with your bars. Measure the distance between the 2 bars where you cut it, cut out a chunk of steel bicycle handlebar that's 7/8ths, get a piece of steel tube and connect it all back into 1 piece. You could bondo the seat and spray paint it again and you'd never even know it was there.

Ailen: Is that just the stock bar clamp that has the middle section cut out? I planned on doing that eventually someday when I have a spare clamp.

Can you tell me if that was originally a 20" Schwinn stingray chopper handlebar set? A friend has one and I can't manage to find what I want exactly... I'd be willing to copy your idea if I may? I love it!

Has to be much longer than 20"??? Did you extend the bar tips or was your original "uncut" set just way longer than 20

Thx

sorry i didnt get back to you sooner i couldent remember my user name lol im not sure of the lengh i just took em off the bike used a bench grinder to cut em in half and extended them enough to not hit the air cover if you do it you have to angle the bars on each side enough to when you make turns you dont crush your thumbs they gave me way more control of my bike after i got used to them and i could ride longer cause they make you lean foward a bit and take weight off your butt lol

I followed this write-up a few years ago when I bought my 08Scg. The set-up still works great. Glad I did it.

Here's a link with the HD part# for the mastercylinder that's needed.
