It been about 7 years and 9000mi since the kit was installed and I just pulled the airbox to check out the filter, which was very clean.......was this an oiled gauze type or some sort of funky paper? It looked really dry, but like fiberglass....I oiled it....did I screw the pooch?

If it isn't stamped somewhere along the rim K&N then I can't help other than to suggest replacing with a genuine K&N. It could be paper and if so then yes oiling it is NOT a good thing.
If it is K&N you need a K&N charge kit from any local auto parts store. Follow instructions to a T.
Pretty simple and they are lifetime filters but kind of costly ($50-60) bucks.

you really should atleast buy a new paper filter for now. If that one you oiled IS paper it might cause plugs to foul out or worse. [up]

greetings and welcome BTW

Yes, it was NOT a K&N filter.....though it looked VERY similar, hence the confusion. It was pleated with a wire mesh holding the material. And the material had a textured look to it.

Already buttoned up....will take back apart later and send pic.

All of this would be answered if someone could tell me what type air filter came in the race kit to begin with.

Yeah I'm not sure. Are you the original owner?

Everyone feel free to correct me, but I've been looking at filters lately (K&N obviously, Buell Race if I can find one, might have found two of them for sale, and Pipercross). I was looking for a Buell Race Filter when I bought the bike and I quickly realized a F.A.S.T. Intake was next to impossible to find. Anyways,

Left: original filter
Middle: K&N
Right: Original Buell Race Filter (That pic is from this BadWeb Thread (http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/146704.html?1141033249) where they talk about it getting discontinued.

And from what I can tell this is what it was replaced with (Part Number 29388-02YB):

And it is what appears to have been in the factory race kits:

I have a 2005 dealer installed race kit and mine has a stamped K&N so apparently it was up to each dealer in what was considered a race filter.

Sorry I would have stated that earlier had I known there were discrepencies.
