View Full Version : Brembo Rear Brake Hanger - feeler

Guys,

I am looking into making a small run of the rear caliper mounts for the Brembo caliper, you know the one that tucks it in behind the swing arm. I'm still gathering quotes, but I think $50 each is do-able. they would be machined out of 7075 aluminum. to get the price down I'd have to have 12-14 of them made.

Anybody interested?

Would it relocate the factory one to that location?

EVLXB

No - you use a Ducati 2 piston rear brake caliper from a monster or 748/916. I can't take any credit for the idea, I am basing my design on an existing product. I am making 1 for myself and was just seeing if anyone else would be interested. Below is what the 'other' guy's looks like. Mine is similar, I've made a few changes - but in reality this is a simple bracket and really can't be changed a ton. I've got the 3D CAD at work - I can post a few screen dumps if anyone is interested.

EVLXB

You need the duc caliper. It is a better brake also, 2 piston vs 1. I bought mine on ebay for $40 shipped.

Anybody know the price of a new ducati caliper in case you can't find a used one? It would be a killer mod that would work tons better.

EVLXB
10-26-2008, 01:10 PM
I'm not sure how much new ones are, you could call a Duc shop and ask. Ebay has them all over the place.... just put "ducati rear brake caliper" in the search. $40 - $60 should be a pretty good price on a used caliper.

I am till waiting on the machining quote, but I'm 99% sure I'll be moving forward with this. I'll need to create the first one and test it to make sure there are no clearance issues first. When it is ready I'll let folks know.

....and just for some back-ground on me, I'm a senior product engineer for the worlds largest automotive parts manufacture. I have 7 years in manufacturing and 2 in product. I will not release a product if I am not 100% confident in it. The components I design at work are steering related and safety is our #1 focus.

Will the hydraulic hose not wear on the swingarm?
It looks a bit tight to me. Yould you send a detail picture of the hose? And maybe one from the other side?

I would probably go for a longer hose if there is a risk on wear.

But the idea and result is really great!

It sure fits the bike. I guess Erik would also give you two thumbs up. [up][up]

This, together with;
- removing belt guards,
- passenger peg bracket,
- mounting a fender eliminater like the sharknose(colorofspeed)
- and some marco polo black micro lights

It will surely finish my near future XB12Scg (still negotiating. Also Buell dealers feel the crisis...

The idea is great!

Sure you'll sell more of them.

And add powdercoated black.....

Stevenc150
11-20-2008, 07:05 PM
And add powdercoated black.....
But you can't see the finished product, it's sandwiched between the brake caliper and behind the swingarm . Unless it's one of those things for you, that just knowing it's that way, bothers you. [smirk]

EVLXB
11-20-2008, 07:23 PM
Yes the hose is tight. It will likely wear some paint off the swing arm. I am planning on getting a longer universal hose to go under the swing arm.

I will post some new pics tonight - close-ups.

Poohspot18
11-20-2008, 07:28 PM
Powdercoat it when you get it, Doesn't cost much. I know the 84 MM mounting centers will work, that's mostly consistent. I just don't know if it makes a difference if I get the 32 MM caliper or the 34 MM and if it will be better to have the inlet on the left or right or on the side. Probably on the RIGHT. Here's most of the different calipers available. Will probably go Ebay to get one, but I gotta make sure I get one that is compatible and won't require a hose stretcher. :) http://www.yoyodyneti.com/Category.aspx?CategoryID=3002

henri66
11-20-2008, 07:49 PM
34mm seem to have the hose connected to the side. I doubt if there is room for it. Sombody will have to try.

For the hose, I would suggest an extension of the connector. It will probably not need too much extra length. And it would re-use the original hose and clamps. That is why a picture would be nice.

Love the idea.

And to Stevenc150;
In the first pictures the bracket(mounted on another model) is visable. That is why I would like to see the details.
And YES!
Principles are Principles as Black is Black.
Footpegs, shifter and ceramic coated headers are also on the list.
Isn't that the spirit of Buell and what is customizing all about?

Everything is in the details.

Sure wish they would allow an all black licence plate too ;););)

I'll try to answer a few more questions.

I don't know if the caliper I have is 34 or 32 mm, and it is all mounted and loce-tite'd down. To be honest I didn't know there were 2 sizes. I can tell you it came of a later model duc monster. If mine is a 32 then there is probably room for a 34. I did build in a 2 mm clearance around the bracket to caliper. No guarantees though. If not, you could easily sand/grind in some additional clearance.

There should be room to use either top or side inlet/bleeder calipers - the bugger is with side mount you would probably have to bleed the caliper before you mount it. There is not enough room to get in there and if the bleeder is on the bottom then you will definitely have to bleed it before you mount it.

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1933_20081120163333_L.jpg

You can't really 'extend' the connector - both ends are banjo's and they are crimped on. Unless there is something that will connect to a banjo?

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1933_20081120163549_L.jpg

I had the parts vapor blasted (sand blasted) to give it the look of the silver swing arms - if yours is black - I think powder coat would look better. You'll have to do that on your own.

When I said the hose is tight - I should have been more clear. It looks like it is stretched tight - it is not. When I re-installed the hose I had to twist the hose to get it back on the master cylinder. this causes the hose to kinda 'coil'. There is plenty of slack in the line to move with the swing arm.

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1933_20081120163434_L.jpg

I rode it around tonight for 1/2 hour without any issues, I didn't really think there would be. I got a lot of strange looks though, it's 25 deg F and there was a few snow flakes falling. :D

Now that the first one is complete and tested, I will have the balance machined up. Should be another week at the most. I have the list of folks interested and will contact you when they are ready.

Also - Since this is such a litigious world (sue happy) - I want to make it very clear that if you buy this thing you decide what you want to do with it. I am selling these as aluminum brackets. I happened to use mine a bike, I would never suggest that you do the same. You could hang house plants from it just as easy. If you can agree to that - I'd be glad to send you an aluminum bracket.

Thanks guys - This has been a great project and I appreciate all the feedback.

Who talks about growing up?

I travel the world for a living, and have seen and experienced enough. And I shouldn't even react to your comments.

But in this case, as you finish with a question mark I will give you my opinion about your comment.

I do believe in forums.
They are a great way to share ideas. And it combines people with different views and background. And bonds them through the same passion.
Sharing all these ideas should results in a better or more beautiful product.

Sadly there are allways people who can't come up with ideas or even positive critics. They just fill these forums with all kinds of comments. Whatever is on their mind must be written down.
In this case your comment doesn't add nothing to the post.
And I doubt if your other 237 comments on this forum do.
Yes, do continue to reach a 'Lieutenant Colonel' rank or higher. But do it with some better comments/critics.
And please keep to the subject. In this case a great members initiative. Which surely deserves a lot better than 'non related comments' also known as 'spam'.

And what is wrong in trying to get an all black bike?

I am sure you can't resist another comment when I tell you that I also love my black wife.

I rest my case........... And can't wait for better comments.

Wow, I'm flattered. All That dedicated to me.

If you don't think I "add" to the posts...you must not be on here that much, or haven't read many other posts. These posts go "all over the map" once started.

Could care less about rank (it doesn't pay enough). ;)

Let's see, what else, ummmm, oh, could care less about what color your wife is.

Other than that, you're a melodramatic guy. http://smile.smilies.nl/542.gif

And just so this isn't a http://users.telenet.be/mdr/fun/smiley/spam.gif comment:

All - I did see everyone's request for the CAD and could probably send it to those who have asked. I would like a chance to re-cover some of my costs of these things. I have several hundred dollars into this so far (material, cutting and machining) and I have not sold one yet, not to mention the hours I have into designing. I only bought enough material to produce 13 brackets.... I have to sell most of them to get to a break-even point. I don't plan on producing more than the 13 - I only did this cuz I wanted one and I thought others would too.

I should have some to sell next week. The shop that is machining them got slammed with 'real' work. I will email those that are interested when I have them on hand.

Thanks all for understanding.

Bottom line, I am hopeful that viewer’s of this post take note and has the integrity not to purchase your product.

Dark Horse (Keith) - I apologize if you feel I am 'stealing' your design, I stated from the get-go that the idea of mounting a Brembo caliper to a Buell was not mine. The pictures I got were from the BW site - I guess I should have checked where they came from – sorry for that.

Point Doc - I think you are being a little hypocritical aren’t you? You basically stole the premise as well. I wonder who stole who's design - Dark Horse or Trojan Horse (weird how the names are so close too). And yes I realize you are not selling them - but you stole $70 from Keith too.

All other's - My intention is not to steal food from Keith's table. I took an existing idea/premise/design - tweaked the process, material and dimensions to improve upon the original. Something that has been done all over the world for who knows how long. I did not buy one of the existing brackets and reverse engineer it (that is un-ethical). $70 CNC from solid is probably a great price.. I felt $70 was too much (for me) to pay for that bracket.. so, I created my design to be waterjet friendly, it's cheaper and works just as well. I use 7075 aluminum because it has almost twice the properties as 6061, I have no idea what they use. I use 5/8" thick material to give the best strength, I have no idea what they use.

Integrity - please - this has nothing to do with integrity. I apologize for using the photos and nothing more. My kids have hundreds of crayons from a number of different manufactures, write them a letter.

I bought enough material to basically break even. I am not making these on an on-going basis.

If it makes you feel any better – I will not post on this subject anymore (unless my integrity is attacked)

Point_Doc

EVLXB,

If you read my first post, I tried for three weeks to purchase from ASB without success. And during this development, I was in contact with Keith. Not for details but to explain the circumstance and he was gracious in understooding.

I am respectful of Keith and any other product of this nature.

I did not post up to sale to others. I had several offers to make and sale but I will not do it.

No, that is not taking money from him. Its my money, not his, yours or anyones elses. Can't steal what is your own!!

My piece is completely CNC'd, from the model to the end product. I used the existing OEM piece as my model. Every detail on my piece was modeled and not just a plotted hole pattern.

It's good to share your talent and I was very interested to see your work, but to turn someone else's idea for profit is questionable.

EVLXB
11-30-2008, 01:31 AM
Oh - I see now. You had Keith's permission to steal his idea or did you invent the Brembo brake bracket and Keith stole the idea from you? Your bracket is killer looking for sure, but what are we arguing about here? The idea that I stole Keith’s idea or stole his design? I did steal his idea (if it was his originally - I really don't know), as you did and Trojan Horse did. I did not steal his design. It is my design (as is yours). Since it is mine I should be able to sell it - no?

My bracket is CNC'd as well, but to keep the cost down I water jet the profile first. I also have clearances machined in for the brake pad and rotor bolts. I have not seen these features in anyone else's designs. I designed those in. It is true I did not invent this 'wheel'.....

I'm sure someone will tell me that I have no dog in this fight, but.....you can't fault someone for using an "idea" to make thier own product, unless it's patented. Without a Patent, the concept is open to anyone to use, make thier own, and sell if they choose.

As far as what this shows for "integrity" or "ethics", that's a matter of opinion for people to decide on their own.

It is to the point of being humorous that you keep attempting to redirect the topic.

The topic is about you and your attempt to manufacture and sale another's product.

When reading your post and viewing the pics, one is left with the impression that the bracket is yours because the owner was not posted.

You did not post any details describing any differences, and how could you when you gave no credit to the designer of the pic.

If I was not familiar with the product I would have believed you designed and manufactured it.

I am left with the impression that identifying the owner of the pic was by design, or else you would not be trying so hard in changing the topic and shifting the attention off of you.

Yes you did apologize for using the pic, but as a reader it seems your intention was to mislead.

I believe your choice of mat'l and thinness is good. I think that the fact you are offering a slightly different model is good, marketable and nicely priced. Just post up using your own material and pic’s.

Thanks for posting pics.

Point Doc - What the hell are you talking about? and why am I getting beaten up for taking a great idea and improving upon it?

"The topic is about you and your attempt to manufacture and sale another's product."
- the topic is 'Brembo Rear Brake Hanger - feeler'
- the first sentence of my post was...
I am looking into making a small run of the rear caliper mounts for the Brembo caliper
- In no way did I mis-lead anyone into thinking I was selling another person's product.

"When reading your post and viewing the pics, one is left with the impression that the bracket is yours because the owner was not posted."
- Huh? The first 3 pics are not mine - the rest are.
- and I said... "Below is what the 'other' guy's looks like."

"You did not post any details describing any differences, and how could you when you gave no credit to the designer of the pic."
- "so, I created my design to be waterjet friendly, it's cheaper and works just as well. I use 7075 aluminum because it has almost twice the properties as 6061, I have no idea what they use. I use 5/8" thick material to give the best strength, I have no idea what they use."
- "I also have clearances machined in for the brake pad and rotor bolts."

"If I was not familiar with the product I would have believed you designed and manufactured it."
- Huh? I did design and manufature it. Not the one in the second pic, but I said... "Below is what the 'other' guy's looks like."

"I am left with the impression that identifying the owner of the pic was by design, or else you would not be trying so hard in changing the topic and shifting the attention off of you."
- Who's changing topics? I am the designer and manufacturer of my bracket.

"Yes you did apologize for using the pic, but as a reader it seems your intention was to mislead."
- re-read the posts - I said... "Below is what the 'other' guy's looks like."

"I believe your choice of mat'l and thinness is good. I think that the fact you are offering a slightly different model is good, marketable and nicely priced. Just post up using your own material and pic’s."
- Gee thanks - I appologized for using a photo that was not mine. Not that anyone else has ever done that... and again I said... "Below is what the 'other' guy's looks like." that should have been enought to say - these pics are not mine.

"Thanks for posting pics."
- no problem.

This does not have to be a pissing match between 2 people who can't stop bitching. EvlXB, I like your design better than some others I have seen and if I had the money to buy the caliper and your bracket I would gladly do so. If Point Doc along with Dark Horse can prove a patent then surely I would by their product because that would show integrity.

Point Doc, I somewhat understand where you're coming from but you made your statement and you should have left it there. The last thing I want to dig through when I'm going through the forums is someone bitching about somebody else. If it's a copyright issue contact the original maker who has that patent and inform them but don't just bitch about it on here.

"As far as what this shows for "integrity" or "ethics", that's a matter of opinion for people to decide on their own.”

I disagree and perhaps I should have explained in more detail in my original post.

There is nothing wrong with taking an existing idea and improving it. If no one did, we would still be riding horses to work every day. I do not want discourage folks from doing this at all.

What a lot of folks may not realize is that most of the Buell aftermarket is provided by mom and pop outfits. The Buell aftermarket is still very small.

We have so many things going against us that my wife keeps asking why we bother. There's not much money in it for sure. Our hourly salary is well below minimum wage.

Between carrying an inventory, advertising costs, attorney's fees, website hosting, raw materials, overhead, travel costs, taxes, etc., that what seems like a like a high price really does not add up that way. Then, nearly half of what we sell is wholesale, so our profits are reduced even more.

At DarkHorseMoto, we do all of the design work and most of the structural analysis in-house using state of the art CAD software. This isn't free either.

My poorly worded point is this: If I had known all of this four years ago when I started DarkHorseMoto, I probably would not have done it. When we have to compete with someone selling the same parts that we do with no overhead, it makes it very difficult. And then we all wonder why there are so few Buell aftermarket suppliers...

BTY, we too cut our bracket profile using a water jet. I developed my design making it as light as possible while keeping stresses below those what is allowed for the alloy we use. Our bracket combined with the Brembo caliper reduces unsprung mass by over a pound.

EVLXB, I appreciate your apology. Be sure and check the stresses in your mounting bolts. They are rather high.

Keith, you sound like a stand-up kinda guy. Thanks for taking the time to follow-up on your original post. I sympathize with your situation - my brother and brother-in-law are small mom-and-pop shops competing in the big-box world. I work at a mega-giant auto related company and watch our jobs get handed over to the Chinese everyday. My intention was never to steal from you, if it looked that way - I apologize and would offer to buy you a beer if we ever get a chance to meet.

Apology accepted sir. After rereading my original post, it did come accross a bit strong.

Regarding Point Doc, he as been nothing but honest with me. If ASB had had the DHM bracket in stock when he placed the order, his bike would have our bracket instead.

Now, about that beer... :):):):):)

Did you attend the 25th Anniversary and do you plan on making the 30th?

DarkHorseMoto LLC
12-01-2008, 05:27 PM
Buell celebrated their 25th Anniversary in July. It was a great time with fellow Buellers, factory tour, parade laps at Road America(!), food, music, and best of all, a slide show narrated by Erik covering 25 years of Buell history. After the celebration, a friend summed it up: "I feel as though I've been a part of something much bigger than motorcycles". I could not have said it better.

I won't make it back next year but would consider going back for the 30th.

DarkHorseMoto LLC

As far as I know, all Homecomings have been held in Milwaukee. This one was extra special as it was the 25th and Buell had sold over 100,000 bikes including the new 1125R.

Hi everyone...

My new caliper and bracket is on.... thanks again EVLXB. May your reputation soar, you get a nod from me!!!

While I was thinking about doing this mod, I researched calipers that would fit, I started a new thread with a list of all the calipers that should work for the mod. So if you need a resource to find calipers, or if you have done this mod, can you check and see if your caliper is listed or, if it is not, please add the caliper you used and the year make and model you got it from.

EVLXB: do you think changing the master cylinder to the ducati one, would help strengthen the braking power.

crxtasy169
07-31-2010, 04:55 PM
Depends on the bore size vs. stock, the bigger the bore the more fluid displaced means more clamping force and stopping power.

MY next mod also!! Hey maybe we could talk EVLXB into having some more brackets made for us(hint hint wink wink nudge nudge) How bout it EVLXB? I was wondering if anybody tried to get a front caliper on the rear? Does anybody think that this would work?

kbonarek
08-02-2010, 04:37 PM
Why would you want that much stopping power on your rear wheel? The original caliper is plenty strong enough...the brembo mod is more of a cosmetic change than a performance one. The unsprung weight difference is a benefit with the brembo, but the oem caliper can still lock up the wheel and has good feel to it.

batman6669

flaya564
08-02-2010, 05:56 PM
kbonarek, you're right, the orginal is plenty strong. I kind of thought the brembo would be the same or a little stronger but not in my case. It won't lock up the wheel any more.

Baal
08-02-2010, 08:41 PM

EVLXB

I have a 916 caliper and MC on the way; we'll see what kind of condition it's in and whether I try to make the MC conversion work as well.

Thought I'd post up pics of the powdercoated bracket. I wanted to go with anthracite (charcoal grey), but they didn't have the powder, so I went with flat black. They left the mating surface and the relief on one side bare milled.

Problem solved. I replaced the hose from cup to the master cylinder. Wrong hose. Replaced it and wala!! Thanks for helping me figure it out.

The hose from the cup to the master, really? It's a low pressure hose, u can squish it with your fingers. Was it blocked or kinked? I'm super curious.

Yeah but I didn't think anything about it and used a silicon vacuum hose. the brake fluid was eating it. I'm an idiot.

You can find the calipers anywhere from $25-$90. The bracket is whatever the price is for the current batch (if there is a current batch). At least on an Ss, you don't have to change the brake line. Other models, I don't know. Add brake fluid if you do a flush, and there you go.
