I'm looking at buying a 2003 XB9R. The bike has about 40,000 miles on it. I was wondering when the motors and transmissions on these bikes are usually rebuilt. Thanks.

my trans bearing went out at 27k miles. the primary side crank bearing was bad too. was about $1k to fix. others have made it past 40k. hard to say what kind of condition that stuff is in.

I would say it depends mostly on how it was maintained and ridden. How many of those miles are 3 digit miles.

If it runs strong, doesn't leak oil, doesn't slip out of gear, the price is right, and the owner has decent service records, I would say you're good to go. Sporty engines (from which these are based) are supremely reliable and durable.
