I am new to this forum. I bought my first buell from a friend in april. It is a 2003 XB9 with screamin eagle ECM, Exhaust, and air box mod. I have a bad tap and am pretty sure (along with my friend harley mechanic) it has a collapsed lifter. Anyway if im going to be taking the motor out to replace the lifter i figure midaswell do a big bore. I dont want to get into case boring and all that nonsense. I talked to and rode a friends sportster with the SE stage 1 1200cc conversion kit installed and really like the power. I was wondering if anyone has installed this on the buell and if it would work or not? Please give me any info you have.
Thanks
Steve

Well, the xb9 and xb12 both have the same cylinders (jugs). To do a 1200 conversiOn on a 9, case boring would be required

There is a thread somewhere on here about NRHS and hammer performance and another company that does bolt on kits for buell's. Might wanna check them out. Good luck [up]

Yes I was looking at those too. I just saw the 1200 h-d kit that stated it doesn't need case boring. That why I asked

The jugs are designed differently, so the kit WILL NOT WORK. I asked the same question to Revolution Performance and its a difference in the fins where the pushrods go. Also, I think they had mentioned something about the bolt location, but I could be wrong there. Its the reason they sell different kits for the models (and the reason I had to exchange the old style tuber kit for the new XB kit).

Oh, and the piston design is different between teh models as well with the rectangular tops.

I think pretty much the only kit for the 9's is the 1050 kit. And it adds like 5-10hp.

Hi cy!
NO...see one of those listed above. (Hammer/REV etc.), I had a discussion the other week about NRHS...I used to think they were all that, but I have been corrected (with substantial evidence)to now have to believe otherwise!! For whatever reason, the 883 Sporty and the 1200 Sporty share the same stroke...their bore sizes dictate the displacemnt, whereas our Buell engine share the same BORE size, and its the STROKE that calls out our displacement. Welcome to our forum BTW!!

NRHS seems to be hit or miss. Some have good stories about them, others bad. My brother dealt with them on a 1250 kit for his sporty and everything went great. I inquired about a 1050 kit for my buell and had a bad experience.

id to the 1050 kit. many on here will tell you that a properly tuned xb9r will keep up with a stock 12 plus it revs higher. even eric buell prefers his xb9r 1050 over the 12. with the 1050 kit and redline 585 cams and lifter upgrades you would be looking at 100+ hp if built right. thats what i would prefer and am doing to my 9r this winter. another thing to consider is the bolt on 12 kits have a thinner lining and are more likely to crack when there is no case boring required. just my opinion.

Honestly, A xb9 with a good intake/exhaust/tune combo should be over 100hp (at the engine). They are 92hp stock.

that is true and is really nice if you dont plan on having a major project but if your already going to have it apart and feel like doing it anyways you can get that horsepower at the wheels. all depends on how much money you feel like spending.

Thanks guys really appreciate the advice!!! I'm going to definatly take the motor down and put lifters in and probably the 1050 kit I think. Don't really feel like getting into cams and timing and all that stuff. I am very mechanically inclined and can do it just don't feel like having that much of a project (only trying for weekend tear down and back together). Do I need to re map my ecu? The ecu in my bike is stamped race use only. I assume that's the premapped ebr ecu. Probably a good question for whoever I buy the kit from but midaswell ask. Also since it needs a lifter do you all suggest factory lifters or any aftermarket ones?

I would get aftermarket lifters, and the ECM will have to be remapped since it is for a 984cc instead of a 1050cc which will need more fuel and air

Make sure the cam isn't hurt...if it lost an alignment and spun in its bore, it probably took the cam with it...hopefully not, but...!!

most of a power increase would be from cams and heads. the bikes now have a nice epa rated cam in it and really can change with new cams and especially the heads. you would get way more power out of the cams and even only stage one heads than a big bore kit. going from 984 to 1050 is only a 6% increase in displacment and really wont give you to much more power. if your looking for a quick power increase heads are where you would want to go.

Besides the 6% increase in displacement though it also up's the compression ratio a hair, that's probably where more of the power increase comes from. At least that's how it is with the blast big bore kit, which only goes from 492 to 515cc but increases power substantially. I've been looking and can't find one, but does anyone know of a video on youtube of someone showing how to do a 1050 kit install? I want to get one for my bike eventually but I've never done work on the internals of an engine. Do companies like nhrs, revperformance, hammer performance, etc, send good detailed instructions with their kits or do they just mail you the part and wish you the best of luck?
