I picked up an 02 M2 last week and have been working through the bike and fixing the little things.
Somewhere along the line it was converted over to chain drive. It seems to be working good but the idler that someone put on is shot and the chain has been hitting the swing-arm and support bracket at the frame. I can't figure out where the idler came from and am at the drawing board trying to come up with ideas for guards/pads.

I was thinking about using some 1/8" thick Kydex and molding it to the swing-arm and attaching it to where the upper belt guard goes. Has anyone seen this mod done and have any other ideas?
Thanks
Greg

Post some pics and maybe someone will be able to recognize it.

^yep let's see some pics. I've got a chain conversion on an xb and there are several others on here with chains as well. I'm sure we'll be able to figure it out.

Does your chain seem loose or stretched?

Not knowing the age of the chain have you worked with them before? You might want to upgrade to a new x-ring chain when you replace the idler. They are cost just over a hundred bucks.

As part of my checkup on the bike, I set the shock preload for my weight and it seems that the bike lowered about an inch. It also looks like I have more clearance now for the chain. But, I'm still going to need guards/roller. As you can see by the pics, it's kind of dirty. The kid lived on a gravel road and I haven't been able to wash the mud and dirt off it yet...

The chain is pretty new from what I was told. I'm not up on chains these days, but it looks like I'm going to need to real fast. The number on the side of a link is 50 and below that XS01. So, is that an X chain?

This one you can see where the chain is hitting the support. You can also see where the bolt hole is for the roller that was on it.

Wheres the pic if the idler? And what size is your reader sprocket? Teeth count?

Can you post a pic of the entire chain drive? Being on an XB, it's hard for me to picture it. On an XB, the idler is on the bottom of the chain drive. That bolt hole looks to be higher? I'm jst not familiar enough with the older models to visualize without the pictures.

Chain looks like an RK.

The bolt hole may have been for the original drive pulley guard. There isn't any idler on it now. I will get a pic of the worthless plastic thing he had on it. At this time I have no idea where an idler would have mounted for the belt. I need to look at pictures of stock setups to see. I am at work now and will get a pic of the whole system this afternoon.

What's left of the little roller unit. 1.5" diameter and width. Obviously it was a best fit thing that may have worked for a little while but not a good fix to the problem.

As you can see, it's wasted and one bearing is totally blown out.

Tube frames don't have an idler pulley for the factory belt drive. I have used skateboard and roller skate wheels on dirt bikes and 4-wheelers in the past to replace worn idlers. All the idler is doing is lifting the chain a little to clear the swingarm. It's a little different on the XB's thats what keeps the chain tight since the rear axle is not adjustable.

I think this one was a skateboard wheel or a cut down version. I used a bearing from one of my kid's skateboards and it works good now. I'm going to try and find a hard skate wheel to replace this one...

I found out the kid used the wrong shim behind the drive ring and there was a 1/4" gap between it and the seal. So, 80w90 poured out if I tilted the bike sideways. It's getting the shim replaced and a once over by a local shop I trust.

Thanks
