Sweet! Thanks for the 'do-it-yourself' airbox mod. It's too cold to ride my Buell now, so I think I'm going to spend the winter adding mods and playing with tools in the garage.

I wish I had my own garage. My bike is in a friends garage 5 miles away. I don't want to rip my bike apart in someone else's garage, especially one that they use every day.

By changing the air intake do you have to do any other adjustments?

With work and school, I have not had the time to complete the project. Hang in there guys, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I will get it done soon!

I had a buddy buy the air box conversion from ASB for his XB12, and I took off with that design for my air box.

1) All I did was cut the factory air box up, leaving only the lip that actually sits on the filter itself.

2) Then I took a piece of aluminum sheet and traced the shape of the filter, both inside and outside.

Now this is the time consuming part

3) Cut along the lines that you traced both inside and out. Get the outside to fit around the the top of the filter flush (for looks). Cut and grind, and cut and grind some more until you get the inside to fit inside the grove of the factory lid that you cut off.

4) Go to the hardware store and find the appropriate hardware, to hold everything in place. I have the actual list from ASB at home that I can get and list up.

Alright here is my modified airbox http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/181_20071216142634_L.jpg

The black plastic is the factory airbox that I cut up. The silver is an aluminum ring that I made, and the black "stuff" is seam-sealer, which holds the two together.

To be competly honest if I had it to do over again I would leave the front two snaps on the original airbox cover alone. That way it could just snap down in the stock locations with no worries about the front pulling up or anything like that, and the hardware to hold down the rear as it is.

Sorry that it took so log to post up the pics lol

looks cool. but , it looks like a lot of work and for what? i have my all cut up on the sides and the great thing is that my factory latch pionts still work. makes for cleaning to K&N very easy "A SNAP". then cut some holes in the front and back.

Do you guys think this is better than the factory ram air setup?

Why did you fit the ally ring? I just did this mod and fitted it straight to the top of my K&N.
It fits nice and snug with no movement and I think it looks OK.
While were on the subject of the airbox mod do I need to do anything else alongside this eg. remap or TPS reset
My bike is an 05 XB12s with a HP Corse can and the diy airbox delete and a race ECM.Will the race ECM be enough on its own?
I also intend to do the breather reroute at a later date will this change things?
Any info would be appreciated,thanks.

Wow... (insert jaw dropping smiley here)

What's the story on that rear fender? I'm going to lay some glass to make a large rear fender/belt gaurd in one piece. Like a motoGP fender.

Your race ecm will do fine with your set up but its not the optimal tune for your bike. The race ecm is set up for the Buell race can and Buell high flow filter. Its better to just put your stock ecm back on and remap it. FYI the race ecm is just a stock ecm with a rich map and some changes in the timing table, sell it and spend the money on a LC-1 wideband 02 sensor then remap you stock ecm. You will be much better off and have a better running bike. Its also fun to tinker around with and gives you an excuse to go for rides, you know to do some data logging ;).

I also intend to do the breather reroute at a later date will this change things? Nope. It doesn't affect airflow/temp./etc. enough to merit even a TPS reset. Just mod and ride. :D

(Edit: And just to add on to Gator, if all you got is the Race ECM, it can be mapped just the same as the Regular ECM. If you don't want to do it with ECMSpy, Xoptiinside.com can take care of you.)

The rear fender is an Ilmberger carbon fibre one.It doesnt actually extend as far as it does in the photo.I only placed it on top of the tyre, normally it would fit further back on the existing fixing points.Check out my other pics on American bike in England thread.
Thanks for the other info. I havent had a chance to take the bike out for a test ride yet so I am going to see how it runs first.
Is the remap an easy DIY mod with the ECMSpy cable?

Is the remap an easy DIY mod with the ECMSpy cable? Just be careful and read up everything you can find, and you'll be golden. It's not as simple as loading program and modding maps and that's it, but with some time it's as effective as anything out there.

Most important thing is to save a copy of your EEPROM before doing any changes. That way you've always got it to fall back on.

ECMSpy.com has the manuals if you don't have them and Xoptiinside.com has some great info as well.

for you guys that just use a piece of the original airbox top traced to the footprint of the filter top, I see you use two bolts to hold it down. They appear to be directly above the two tubes that come up inside the filter...how does this all work? Where are the bolts attached?

for you guys that just use a piece of the original airbox top traced to the footprint of the filter top, I see you use two bolts to hold it down. They appear to be directly above the two tubes that come up inside the filter...how does this all work?

You have to re-route those two tubes that come up and inside the filter.

Where are the bolts attached?

The bolts are attached to a nut and washer that you will use to hold the new "TOP" of the Airbox and the original "UNTOUCHED" floor/base of the Airbox.

So the hoses are re-routed with the breather mod? Both of them? And the bolts I realize will hold down the top piece that's left of the airbox. What I'm asking for is exactly what they thread into, and how that is fastened, pics would be good too. Or are you saying they proceed through the bottom airbox plate and under there there is simply a washer and nut?

Here's something that should help out, click here to see the "How to crank case breather mod" (http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Do-It-Yourself-Buell-Mods/How-To-Crank-Case-Breather-Mod-with-pics)

When doing the Airbox delete mod, you have to almost always do the crankcase mod, due to there not being any other place to run those hoses through the floor/base of Airbox without keeping the original set-up (in which would defeat the purpose of this mod) and then drilling new holes for the 2 screws, 2 nuts and 4 washers to hold the new fabricated Airbox top and floor/base together.

Hopefully I didn't further confuse you [confused]. If I have given false information, fellow buellers please feel free to correct me.

Thanks Rei

I havent done the breather mod on mine yet, but I simply fitted the two bolts straight through the airbox bottom plate with a locknut underneath and also a nut threaded all the way down onto the top part of the plate to keep them stable. The threaded bars were placed in a suitable position alongside the breather pipes.

Youre welcome,I think even if I didnt do the breather mod I would put the threaded bars in the position I did.Looking at others who havent, but have used where the pipes go,I think they are a little too far back and this could give problems holding it down at the front.Where mine are is solid and there is no movement at allhttp://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/3688_20090511152207_L.jpg

Hey Yorkshirelad, any chance you could advise on the length of the studs you used? I'm not near my bike but would like to pick some up on the way home.

They are stainless 8mm metric because this is what I had laying around. As for the length I just cut what I had in half and that turned out OK.Im going to fit wing nuts to them when I get chance for ease of removal.

as long as you have a race ecm or ecm spy to shut the exhaust valve off so it doesn't throw a code.
