Hello everyone! I have acquired a Buell fuel tank mold, with tag that states "Buell R&D Storage Tag" in which it refers to the mold I have. I was wondering if anyone knew anything such as if it is a good find and worth anything. I have both pictures of the fuel tank mold, and the tag attached. I know nothing about bikes or anything, so please let me know what you think. It's made from cast iron as well.

I'm sure it's worth something to a collector, and it looks like it's off of a tuber

Edit: I didn't look at the tag, it's for the S3T models

I have another tag for it, there was two tags on it, the other tag says it's for the X1 as well, but I'm not sure if the tag was misplaced on it, either way, its for one of the two, I'll get a picture of it tomorrow. But yeah, it's cast iron, and was supposed to be destroyed according to the tag. So if you know anyone who might be interested let me know.

Someone stole an R&D part hahah........

How'd you get the mold?

RunDLL32

Not a stolen part, the mold was from there old location in East Troy, they moved out and my company owned the building, they never took this when they left so it became our property, my boss was going to throw it out and I told him I'd take it.

Could you open the mold and snap pics... Possibly close ups of the fuel cap mounting and exits on the bottom half?

The more I look at it I think its an x1 mold. Hmmm. Interesting stuff.

Yeah I can open it and snap some pictures of it, I don't know what I'm looking to get out of it, just offers for now and I'm pretty open for offers, very open actually as I'm looking to get it out of storage and into somebodys hands who can use it. Centroinc might be interested you think? Or? I'd prefer to have this in someones hands who can use it and make molds out of it and see it put into production again, as it is a piece of history indeed.

I wonder how legal making re-pops off an oe mold is? If it is something unique that never went into production.... Screw legal... That would be cool **** right there. Even just to have as a collector piece I am interested. I sent u a private message.

Well they left it in OUR shop after closing their business so the legal rights belong to me now, so it's perfectly legal and it's been a few years already. Like I said though I'll post the other tag I have off of it tomorrow.

Most if the cost is in the mold. The price per part would be pretty low

I wonder if there is even a market to try and start producing these things. I'm near you and interested, but its a gamble and I wouldn't gamble a lot.

I'd say, it's actual monotery value is pretty limited. Fact is, not a signifigant number of X1 nor S3Ts(S3 and S3T use the same tank) were built for there to be a large calling for remanufactored fuel tanks. On top of that, a large majority of tube frame Buells have been mutilated, destroyed, and chopped up into piece of **** choppers.

From a strictly Buell lover/collector point of view, it is a very unique piece and would be loved/cherished. Value as such is simply what someone is willing to spend on it. As far legality of it, the piece would indeed be legally owned. As long as one was producing tanks as replacement tanks/reproduction tanks, and not "original Buell" tanks, I believe you'd be fine. Lots of companies make replacement parts for vehicles of all types that are in no associated with the OEM.

I don't think there are any legal ramifications at all. It's a bike that's no longer in production, for a company who is no longer in business, and It was acquired legally. Mold away!

And here comes the insides, it's all mint condition.

It's 200lbs it says, and it has 1 inside of it which I believe means it's the original number one mold.

NwRider

Definately not an x1 tank.

RunDLL32

Says an S3 tank on the tag in first post. I guessed an X1.

Looked at some photos... S3 for sure. Not sure on what years are injected but that mold is for carb models.

I still may be interested.
