View Full Version : Custom Reverse Exhaust Take 2

03-29-2013, 03:35 PM
OK so I'm not very happy with the way the stock gutted can reverse exhaust came out. Sounds good thumping around town but if you really rip on it, its very very tinny and sounds horrible, but I love the way it looks and the guys at work like how its different then anything you see. Power was good didn't feel any loss from the race pipe.

So now its time to do the exhaust I wanted to do in the beginning.....

Here is my idea......

The only thing I can't decide on is no mufflers and use a slip in baffle like I drew which I would also make myself...... or use one muffler on the left or the right or two mufflers on both sides. What do you guys think. I bought a magnaflow glass pack to use the perforated tube and packing it was cheap at local parts store.

Other parts consist of 2- 180째 j bends 2" OD on a 3" radius, a 2" 180째 u bend on a 2" radius, a 2.25" chrome tip and the 2" magnaflow glass pack. I have about $100 in materials and all bends are mandrel bends from summit racing.

All parts will be mig welded using .027" E706S wire and all the pipes are aluminized. After the pipe is done and the mounts for the chin fairing are on it and I'm happy with the sound and performance I might have it poweder coated or cermacoated.

So this is where I'm at so far cause I'm still waiting on the tight u bend from summit. I cut one j bend in the center to make a 90째 bend and put on a small piece of coupler to attach to the header..... the bend is right and the coupler fits nice and tight all I have to do is slice it and use the stock clamp. The next part is see how the tight u bend lays and that will determine if the rear u mount is staying or if I have to weld tabs on the pipe to mount to the bike.

Now the tricky part is going to be the mufflers..... with that pipe on it, it actually doesn't sound bad its loud but has a good sound..... but its a little raspy high up the rpms. No popping at all but there is a dead spot right off idle.... no worries ecmspy can fix that.

I slid the glass pack on and omg its quiet but sounds decent. Now granted its brand new and also about 30" long. From all the research I have done the slide in baffles for drag pipes don't perform well at all so I'm kinda steering away from that... I like the simplicity but I'm looking for performance and a certain sound. The best way I found is to make a lollipop baffle..... another good idea cause it uses a washer and is adjustable by turning the washer, but its still gonna be loud.

So do I use a slip in baffle or lollipop baffle or make my own mufflers with packing or not and do I make two for symmetry or one on the left or the right? I think if I go with the left the remainder of the pipe will give it a good hollow rumbly effect.....atleast that's what I'm hoping.....also stepping up to a 2.25" pipe will help that also after the muffler.

Let me know what you guys think. I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!

Thanks Dan

I like my reverso[up] APH made by albert666, a member here.

03-29-2013, 04:53 PM
Does it have one or two mufflers? Any better close up pictures?

03-29-2013, 04:59 PM
You have my attention!

I am excited to see the finished product.

03-29-2013, 05:19 PM
Well I need some opinions on the direction to head.... straight pipe? Baffles? One or two mufflers?

03-29-2013, 05:28 PM
Here is a link to the APH website, pics inside.

03-29-2013, 05:31 PM
Damn he kept that thing compact..... I hope I don't have to go that small..... how's it sound? Loud? How's performance?

03-29-2013, 05:54 PM
Performance wise it made alot more low end compaired to my buell race pipe. I heard that it is because of the longer header pipe before it gets to the actual exhaust. (i really don't know, but i like the power) And for some reason it got rid of the slight stumble i had between 3500-4000 rpm. It was louder than the race pipe, which was ok but i opted for the db killer he offered for it. And i like the looks of it[up] (pic of db killer on mine)

03-29-2013, 06:48 PM
How much was that glasspack?

Personally I like the appearance of the stock outer shell. I'd hide it all inside that shell. 1 or two mufflers just depends on how loud you want it. I'd do two, personally, if they are straight through. You can't use a baffle without an outer casing, it won't do anything.

03-29-2013, 06:52 PM
$25 with a discount at my local auto parts store. I like the more naked look of the pipes..... function over beauty. I think all that pipe and pieces look bad ass......

A slide in baffle should work.... all the Vance & Hines pipes use slip in baffles......

03-29-2013, 07:02 PM
gotcha, that baffle should work then. I'd think if you use a 2" pipe with a slip in baffle it'd restrict flow a bit though. Still way better than stock though.

03-29-2013, 07:38 PM
Idk what I'm gonna do yet..... basically the tight u bend will determine muffler design..... This is the bend I'm using.... it has a 2" bend radius so it should be exactly what I want....

I want to stay 2" ID. The stock pipe in the buell muffler is 1 7/8" all the way through.....the header collector is 2" so I want to stay at that size. I have seen many dyno results that a slip in baffle that goes smaller inside of a 2" drag pipe hurt overall performance so I dont want to do that. If I use a 2.25" pipe and a slip in baffle and go back down to a 2" pipe that should work pretty damn good. ID should still be 2" maybe 1 7/8" depending if baffles are louvers or perforated tube. This is something I'd look into using just making a bit larger case like 2.25" or 2.5" and packing and no packing..... I want that I pitched rasp gone.....

The guy at work has a Harley fat boy with a twin cam and boy it makes me a tad jealous the sound and note that comes out of those pipes...... just sounds absolutely amazing and its not that loud either. That's the sound I'm shooting for..... so far the short straight pipe is close just bit to loud

03-30-2013, 06:36 PM
OK so no working on the bike tonight..... I didnt get home till 730 from the flyers game but anyhow the bend showed up today. Its gonna work out perfect. The pipes are 4" on center so by the time I add a 3" muffler case it will be right on 7" like the factory pipe was. I'm gonna try and make it so its repackable..... it shouldn't be to hard.... I'll just have to go to the local exhaust shop and have then stretch a piece to fit inside the 3" case then rivet it together. I'm gonna put two mufflers on it but one will be fake for now..... I wanna do it so I can test muffler on one side or the other and packing or no packing......

03-30-2013, 07:04 PM
You like hockey? That's Fing awesome!!! :)

03-30-2013, 07:12 PM
Do I like it? I freaking live it!!!! When I have extra time I play street hockey and ice hockey..... both me and the wife love the flyers and both have tattoos lol. Once I get the black plastics on my bike I'm gonna have the bike vinyled orange with a flyers logo..... so in short yes I like hockey just a little lol.

Oh and we killed the Boston Bruins today haha!!!!!

03-30-2013, 07:20 PM
Are you from Philly? Hockey is awesome, so fun to watch.

03-30-2013, 07:59 PM
Not in philly but I've lived in the burbs almost my whole life..... born and raised in pa! Broad street bullies baby!

03-30-2013, 08:00 PM
OK well I just couldn't leave it alone so I cut some pipe and mocked it up..... so far so good. It looks freaking sweet..... I wonder how it sounds like this..... can't find out till tomorrow... kids are tucked away waiting for the Easter bunny lol.....

All I have to do yet is hack up that glass pack and make some end caps and tack it all up and see how it looks..... as far as making it able to be torn apart easy I think I'm just gonna let it go..... it will be easy enough to cut the end caps and slide it apart..... I'm going to let it as a slip joint inside the mufflers.... on second thought I might take a piece of 2" pipe and use a plasma to punch a bunch of wholes in it and make my own glass pack....... hmmmmm

03-30-2013, 08:06 PM
Im guessing its going to be fairly quiet, not stock quiet but not jardine loud. You ve got me thinking about building a new pipe myself! I should just leave it alone!

03-30-2013, 08:18 PM
So your saying maybe I should try it as a straight pipe? I want jardine loud minus the bad performance I read about. If I do make mufflers I think I'm gonna leave then empty..... just a perforated tube inside a 3" or 3.5" case.

03-30-2013, 08:20 PM
Also just noticed that the 180째 bend is stainless steel..... I should really get some 2" stainless j bends to match the rest of the pipe and then it wouldn't have to be coated.

03-30-2013, 08:36 PM
I wouldnt even put the perferated tube into a case that big, prob sound very tin'ee hollow, raspy what ever, cram that perferated tube into as tight of pipe as you can. Get that harley sound. Without a large case and packing you wont get a deep sound.

03-30-2013, 08:43 PM
How do you think it will sound with packing vs sliding the perforated tube in the pipe?

03-30-2013, 09:24 PM
Quiet, my pipe is a 2" outlet similar to a jardine in shape, its longer by a couple inches, over all decibals the jardine is louder but mine is deeper. So id say the bigger the case you make with packing the deeper growl, but will be quiet. Deans system sound is amazing, duel large cases straight through makes for amazing sound.

03-30-2013, 09:35 PM
So it will be quiet but sound good..... hmmmm sounds like this might be a lot of testing to find the sound I'm looking for.....

03-30-2013, 09:38 PM
One thing I have noticed that the longer the pipe gets the quieter it gets.... right of the header is obnoxiously loud.... once I put the extra 18" on it got a bit quieter but still barked.... now throw it the 180째 bend and another 16" or so of pipe.... Idk..... might have a lot of playing with this project to get a good outcome.

03-30-2013, 09:50 PM
If you have the resources the time and interest you might even come up with the next bad ass system everyone will want. Ive thought about an under tail system but that goes against what buells were designed for and i dont like impractical mods or changes

03-30-2013, 10:03 PM
I could build more once I get this one figuref out....

03-30-2013, 11:16 PM
I didnt build my pipe but it only has one muffler on the exhaust exit side. I love everything about the front exit exhaust. Keep going on this build. You will love it.

03-31-2013, 05:21 AM
Could you post some more up close pictures??? That sure does look good!

03-31-2013, 07:26 AM
So I got the pipe mocked up and on the bike. Everything fits really good except the front slip joint on the header is gonna needs slight tweek to get the left side of the pipe to rotate up just a hair its pretty short in the rear so I'd also like to push the entire 180째 bend back about 3" which I can do when I build the mufflers. The exit pipe also needs to come forward about 3" as well to match up to the notch I have cut in my chin fairing ..... so I'm far from done.

03-31-2013, 07:38 AM
Did you fire it up? What did it sound like?

03-31-2013, 08:14 AM
Idk you guys tell me..... idle sounds good nice and deep..... but when you rev it ..... it sounds very high pitched.... its gonna need a muffler....

03-31-2013, 08:40 AM
The question is how is it going to sound under your helmet , you have to listen to it when your riding. To me it sounds nasty as hell .( I mean that in a good way .) You might want to put a muffler on it though.

03-31-2013, 08:45 AM
Idc I'll wear ear plugs on long rides.... have to wear them everyday at work anyway so it doesn't bother me. I have to get it braced better so it doesn't vibrate off like it did in the video.... lol. Once I do that I can do some tests under load cause the motor always sounds different under load. Some of the best sounding v-8 motors I ever heard were in boats cause a boat is always under load and they sound bad ass!

03-31-2013, 01:27 PM
Good luck with the build i'm going to have to meet up with you some time just to hear it in person and ride with you .

03-31-2013, 01:35 PM
Sure thing..... what part of pa where you from?

03-31-2013, 03:22 PM
So I got back from Easter dinner and decided I was gonna hack up that glass pack..... I just don't like how those louvered baffles look and I can't imagine they perform all that great. The magnaflow has really nice internals but the packing was horrible. A real dense hard type of fiberglass and not all the pipe was packed either only about 2/3 had packing. I also don't really want to use the 3 1/2" case so I'm gonna grab some 3" and some steel wool tomorrow. My idea is to make two mufflers one functional and one to start out fake but depending on the sound I might make it a hollow chamber to see if I can get a good rumble out of it.

The first try will be this, The real muffler will go on the left side of the bike right after the header and will be around 16" long. The perforated tube is 2" OD just like the exhaust tube. Then into the 180째 bend then into the fake muffler then out the side in the front. If that doesn't work or sound good I'm going to flip sides. The real muffler will have the inlet that can slide in and out so it can be repacked. Rivets will be hidden under the cowl....... let me know what you guys think. Thanks

03-31-2013, 03:23 PM

03-31-2013, 05:22 PM
greasyxb9s I am in willow grove Pa not to far away, maybe an hour if that.ON a bike probably less.

03-31-2013, 05:24 PM
Yeah that's right.... well I'm planning a day strip for memorial day weekend I was thinking about going out 322 to Harrisburg and then 15 N we'll have to get together

03-31-2013, 05:31 PM
just hit me up brother and i'm in. will find some where to meet.

03-31-2013, 05:53 PM
Oh **** iu said willow grove lol I was thinking Williams grove racetrack damn I'm tired haha.... hell I'm from Montgomery county and so is a lot of my family..... I wouldn't mind meeting you somewhere down that way and we could run around lansdale, quakertown area.....

03-31-2013, 06:36 PM
WOW your closer than I thought ,i'm in any time. you ever go to van sant airport a lot of bike stop up there? (bucks county)

03-31-2013, 06:41 PM
No I've never been there I live in Berks county now right outside of reading..... about 15 minutes from cabelas.....

04-01-2013, 07:27 PM
Well its pretty much done..... its all mocked up and tacked together. Little heavier then I wanted it to be but it sure looks freaking sexy.... and sounds ****ing bad ass!!!!!

I got 3" round pieces of scrap at work and used a hole saw to drill out the 3" centers. Then I got 3" pipe at auto parts store cut a short piece off to slide in the expanded end that way I can test the pipes with packing or with out and later on down the road I can repack or repair if need be. Its a bit longer then what I expected being about a 1" from the tire.... so I'm gonna have to shorten her up just a tad. Overall I'm very pleased with the way it turned out and the sound..... omg wonderful with no packing. I haven't riden it yet cause the back straps are about a 1" to long now so the back doesn't get tight. But it looks freaking good!!!!

Well here ya go let me know what you guys think!!!!!

Thanks Dan

04-01-2013, 08:07 PM
Nice, Nice.... Im about to start building a muffler as soon as motor is back in the frame. I picked up a brand new Bassani 4" Megaphone with a 2.5" baffle. Im basically making something that looks like a force muffler.

Yes its way long, probably cut off more than half of it.

04-01-2013, 08:09 PM
I wish I could find a force those pipes sound awesome!!!!

04-01-2013, 08:23 PM
I used to have one on my old 12. I got it for $150 shipped from somebody off badweb in like 2006ish. Freaking deal of a life time.(somebody knocked my bike over)

This bike made 100hp and 85tq, Pipe, Nallin Stg3 heads

04-02-2013, 02:04 AM
Looks great Dan, wish I had skills like that but I don't so I'll be buying one from APH when the funds are available.

04-02-2013, 06:10 AM
greasyxb9s need to hear the sound looks great do a vid please.

04-02-2013, 06:32 AM
I will tonight once I shorten it up .....

04-02-2013, 07:38 AM
Come on guys I want more opinions on what you think!!!! Please!!!

04-02-2013, 09:50 AM
yeah! reverso is tha ****! i have a APH it performs the only thing is the sound its for me too much Harley (on steroids) so i쨈m thinking in packing it for a more deep sound.. its on the never ending to do list..

yours looks cool do you know this italian guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRXRWb-Hstg) ? if you want to open the second chamber this can give you the idea of how it would sound

04-02-2013, 05:58 PM
Well out of trying to get it done before dark and out of my own stupidity I f'd the pipe up tonight.....

I left the house and went down the street I'm thinking damn this sounds bad ass. Pull out onto the street and rip on it..... starts missing and carrying on and I don't know why. Low fuel light comes on so OK maybe I'm out of gas but I wasnt that low.... so I pull out on the highway and barely make it to the gas station. Fill her up with 93 fire it up.... it carries on for another minute or so and goes away.... before one last backfire... the end cap of the pipe blew off..... tink tink tink there she goes.... so I loop around and grab it and go home. I forgot to tack the damn think so it wouldn't fall off. Its completely ruined I'll have to cut it apart and use a new piece to fix it. What really bothers me is why did it carry on.... Idk I'll post another thread.....

Also I'm going to have to make brackets to mount the pipe cause the hose clamp is to big now.... I cut one down and welded it shorter but I don't like it at all and I can't find a 23" t bolt clamp anywhere..... pisses me off....

04-02-2013, 06:13 PM
the exhaust is probably more free flowing than your original and mite need to be fattend up the backfire is usually from exhaust leak. Do tps reset and weld up everything.

DrogeN Omen
04-02-2013, 06:51 PM

04-02-2013, 07:07 PM
Yeah but the last pipe was almost just like this one..... and it ran fine the way it was..... I dont get it.....

04-02-2013, 07:09 PM
And I have a race ecm.....

04-02-2013, 07:19 PM
Maybe, just maybe by the time the exhaust gases reach the end theyve slowed down to a near stop, creating a massive air dam, little cold air some back pressure and raw fuel, SssPppLllloooooSsiiiioonnn! Also missing cause its backed up, might look free flowing, but if the exhaust cant maintain speed and momentum through the entire system the gas isnt flowing. Regardless of sound

04-02-2013, 07:26 PM
Damn I hope that's not it... I hope it was just low on gas.... like I said as soon as I filled up it went away a little bit later took 3 gallons of gas.... but when the light came on before it didn't carry on like that ..... Idk I just checked it with ecmspy and no codes were set all the maps look OK I mean nothing funny..... maybe I should really weld her up ..... maybe that's part of it too.....

04-02-2013, 07:27 PM
The more i study your design and compare to other systems im More inclined to believe exactly as i suggested, you have 2 very large chambers in sequance that allows gas to expand thus slowing your flow speed, then pushed into a smaller diameter/restriction slowed even more, and again large long chamber expands and slows, then exits smaller diameter creating one last bump, flow has stopped at that point entill next pulse bumps it out.
Posted early, bet it cleared up after the ECM adjusted the fuel tables to compensate.

04-02-2013, 07:30 PM
But the second muffler is fake the pipe flows straight threw it

04-02-2013, 07:31 PM
Even besides the second muffler being fake do you think I should flip them? And have the muffler right before the exit?

04-02-2013, 07:33 PM
The second chamber is a solid pipe no holes into the chamber? and yes id have the packed/large chamber on the exit side.

04-02-2013, 07:43 PM
Yes solid pipe look at previous pictures.... now the muffler is a perforated tube and has no packing in it yet.....

What's your reasons for putting the muffler at the very end?

Also elaborating on your theory the pipe is.just tacked together.... so there are leaks everywhere I didn't even think of what you said and the pipe not being sealed till you said it..... I was trying to see how it sounded before I welded it solid..... guess I have to weld her up.

04-02-2013, 08:43 PM
That way the hot gas velocity is fast the majority of its travel, enters chber slows down then exits, vs slowing down 18" before the exit and forcing fast flowing exhaust to smash into it thus causing an air dam and restricting your system.

04-02-2013, 08:56 PM
There are a lot of other factors you could consister such as heat, higher exhaust temps mean higher velocity, bends cause reverberation, the amount of expansion and how much thetemperature drops, even the length of your pipe could cause a cooling effect especially with open seems rushing air in. That along could make it run funky. Last thing you wanna do is slow your flow, only time you add baffels or chambers is to actually increase velocity. Dean has a link somewhwre thats very informative maybe PM d_dams about the link

04-03-2013, 05:05 AM
So I rode to work this morning and it ran great.... no hiccups no missing no backfires...... I don't get it ..... maybe it was that low on gas..... but why didn't the low fuel light come on at home when I was idling and reving to test the pipe? Oh well all's good.

Sounds good... not loud but has a beautiful Harley rumble. And don't get me wrong it can be loud if you want it lol....

Before I weld it up I'm gonna flip the muffler and try that and also packed and in packed.....

04-03-2013, 05:17 AM
Good to hear/[up]

04-03-2013, 05:13 PM
So I got it all welded up tonight and packed the muffler.... it actually got louder.... although I'm not happy with the packing..... I'm going to order some better packing or possibly steel wool.

Man it sounds really good. I left it the way it was with muffler on the left side right after the header. I'm going to try it on the other side as well but I'm happy with the results. It runs good and pulls hard through the bottom end to the top. I like it!!!!!

I'll let you know what happens with the reverse side of the muffler when I flip it......

Next project.....a possible force exhaust copy lol :D

04-04-2013, 05:58 AM
.....a possible force exhaust copy lol

don't copy off me!

04-04-2013, 06:33 AM
Thanks for the idea lol

04-06-2013, 08:27 AM
Don't use regular steel wool...very flammable make sure you get stainless steel wool if you are gonna go that route for packing I'm currently building a pipe and I was gonna use stainless steel wool but found a product that I liked better....ceramic wool... should never burn out at least from what I read and it's pretty inexpensive too...good luck on the rest of your build!

04-06-2013, 10:31 AM
Yeah I meant stainless steel wool...

Idk I gotta flip the muffler to the exit side...... it sounds great the way it is but breaks up pretty bad around 5800 rpm and struggles to pull through 6000 rpm... I think it is the reason stated above..... if I can't figure it out with some simple tuning I'm gonna scrap the whole project and build a d&d look alike or a force

04-06-2013, 11:41 AM
If you really want to know what its doing, you need a set of wideband O2 sensors installed, both front and rear.

Not exactly reference material, but you get the idea. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/exhausttech.htm

There's a link to some wideband info on their site as well, I bought a dual PLX-devices setup for my 1125, but amd going to try out a set of Innovate MTX-L's on my xb.

04-06-2013, 12:16 PM
How keep them wired in with the ecm then? Also can you swap a wide band out for the stock one? I have to do some research on this

04-06-2013, 12:22 PM
I'm also wondering if this exhaust is even a good idea..... yeah it looks cool but there is a reason why no one else makes them and not one other motorcycle I have ever seen has a reverse exhaust on it.... Idk starting to make me wonder....

04-06-2013, 02:13 PM
Look for freespirits RS 404 reverso these guys invented the system (I think) together with HP CORSE Italian ehxaust manufactor and until then no other exhaust system got a bigger hp gain at the wheel after they stop making it other company's or craftmans still make it it's about making the gases travel a longer distance inside the pipe it's kind of the same thing like Buell made on the XB12 with the exhaust valve actuator it shore is different and changes the performance of the bike but not necessary a bad thing

04-06-2013, 03:36 PM
Yeah exactly what was said earlier my muffler is on the wrong side which is probably affecting he power and its hitting a was at 5500 and can't over come it....

04-06-2013, 04:13 PM
How keep them wired in with the ecm then? Also can you swap a wide band out for the stock one? I have to do some research on this

They run independent of the ecm, you can send a narrow band signal to the ecm if you want via a single wire. I did it on my 1125, the xb will work the same way. You don't have to use both inputs to the ecm, although you can set up a switch to toggle them if you wish to datalog it and get accurate results. I think the plx setup I have supports it's own datalog function, I've just never used it.

04-06-2013, 05:21 PM
Greasy the simple answer to deans suggestion about the wide band, is they are used for tuning purposes, you use the wide band to monitor the air:fuel ratios data log and make adjustment in your tuning. Its not meant to replace your narrow band o2 sensor, also some mods like another O2 bung would need to be added for best data logging.

04-06-2013, 05:41 PM
I did permanently replace the stock narrow band sensors on my 1125, the xb will get the same. It has narrow band outputs, so the ecm will never know the difference. The MTX-L setup comes with a bung, the PLX-devices one did not.

04-06-2013, 06:06 PM
I'll have to look into that setup.....

On other notes I flipped the muffler around tonight and omg what a difference its like a whole new bike! More power everywhere it just plain runs better.... the pipe is getting pretty beat though pulling it off and on.... I'm gonna run it for a few days like this and then next weekend its getting cut all back apart one pipe from header to u turn so there is no joints and then brand new packing and then welded completely up. Then I'll grind her down paint it and be done the its time to start tuning. I'd really like to get with max from tuniversity just don't have the cash right now.

04-20-2013, 09:06 PM
Well guys I have given up on my reverso exhaust.... yeah it looks cool but the performance I am looking for just isn't there.

I got a jardine from rchuff today and put it on as soon as I got home. I rode my bike an hour to meet him and took me about a had.hour to put it on so I was fresh off the bike. The power is much better. More low end torque and quite noticeable top end. I am running the race ecm from the buell race kit so it is probably fairly close to being right...... but Idk why you guys complain about the jardine cause I absolutely love this pipe......

My reverso is more Harley sounding and louder then the jardine but the jardine has that thump I was looking for. I'm going to mess around with my pipe some other time and will probably start saving my pennies and dimes for another jardine system so when it does need repacked I can just swap the cans......
