Yah:D:D saw this on the web recently.. looks sick... I guess you're going to show it? best of luck with that... the gas mask is, well some might say, redonkulous[up]

Nice! I personally love the gas mask. Can we see a front on picture? I would go all black in a minute if I thought it was safe. I've always ridden the brightest motorcycles possible to give me a slight chance at survival.

thnx, guys. i'll post some more pics.

v12tiger, you might have seen mention of a local show i put it in. not really my thing but i was meeting up with some friends for the day. bike took home an award. fun day but would have rather been riding ;)

buellxb, sure, i'll throw a front shot up with some other pics.. .

Where did you get that gas mask? I have to have it. The riding position looks really aggressive. Did you just adjust the rear spring? Does the aggressive riding position make it easier to ride at high speeds? Wind?

typeone
05-15-2007, 12:14 PM
gas mask is a real British Avon unit that i modified to fit the XB headlight. picked it up from a military surplus vendor. the tail has been lifted with cast spacers, the bars lowered with MX bars, see pic. front and rear suspension are stock. riding position is more aggressive, great for street duty, not as good as clip-ons for twisty duty. riding in the wind above 80mph still sucks just as much as stock ;)

This is probably one of the most tasteful custom Buells I have seen yet. Great work, I love it. Where did you get your spacers for the tail? I have a SCG and I'd love to raise it up a bit without fooling with the suspension.

May I ask Where did you get your oberon parts? in the US?

typeone
06-13-2007, 05:06 PM
thanks! pretty much all parts came direct from the maker, see list above. i don't even want to know how much extra i paid in exchange rates and shipping. hahaa. such is life with no cool ****e in the states.

Where did you get the tail lift? Is it the spacers? If so where did you get them?

typeone
06-15-2007, 02:04 PM
all parts came direct from the maker, see list above.. .

tail spacers are from pM-Performance in Switzerland ($300US) or you can get spacers from Frank-Parts in Germany but I forget the price.

mrdozer2you
06-15-2007, 02:40 PM
Wow, too much. I can get a whole set-up from Trojan Horse for about the same price

typeone
06-15-2007, 08:57 PM
the Frank-Parts setup from Trojan is ~$600US :)

mrdozer2you

damn, I forgot they were in UK, thats british pounds. Almost a 2:1 exchange

mrdozer2you
06-16-2007, 12:35 PM
Oh, what seat is that? Is it the stocker? How did you re-fit it with the tail spacers? Doesn't that change the angle?

typeone
06-17-2007, 04:48 PM
yeah, thats the stock S seat. you gotta jam it on a bit, pushes into the 'tank'. i'm going to pick up a cheap pan, trim it then get a custom seat made. probably do that over the winter along with MORE BLACK. :D

Very Cool typeone. Super clean bike. I have to tell you...I think the gas mask in the front is very creative. You've inspired me to trick out the lights for my bike a little. I was gonna get a mask just like you did (giving you all the credit when asked of course) but have decided to go a different route. We have done a lot of similar mods, but my bike isn't blacked out quite as much. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

flyboy, see list above for all mods and makers, i ordered pretty much everything direct. for the Oberon bar-end mirrors, i ordered direct from Oberon in the UK. and yup, i can see out of them. i'm used to looking down after having the same setup for the past few years. used to have a CatEye mtb mirror on left in same position.

roberuno, thanks!

typeone, the fender eliminator you used, from hillbilly motors, do you have the link to it? thanks, guys!

dgp, regarding the tail, i dont think HBM ever sold that unit in their catalog. Jens happened to have a prototype on the bench in Carbon/Kevlar weave which is the one I have. its a dupe of an HSA tail. i'm not sure if they're still being produced by either company, this is going back a few years now. someone did find a similar unit recently but i dont have a link... i know it was another German company though. Most of my mods were bought direct from shops in the EU. required lots of surfing and translating German! :D

regarding the plate mount/location, i did that myself, not part of the kit. most tail kits allow for a bracket that sticks down as you mention. i positioned and drilled for the plate in the stock undertail.

few newer pics...

typeone, got 1 Q for you.

the oberon footpegs, did you get a spring mounted for them aswell?
i've made a testrun with those footpegs but they were mounted without a spring to keep them in their position.
it was a pain, since when i opened the throttle, the peg was pushed inwards and i had nowhere to place my foot.

HOVERJOCKI, just took my time cutting and fitting. quite a bit of material got cut away. the masks eyelets are much smaller than the Buell lights and have heavy duty plastic lenses. all that needed to be removed. along with the cannister and a bunch of interior rubber.. .

drakon3rd, not sure which part you're talking about exactly since i dont have a rear fender :) but the tail piece (with LEDs) is a Hillbilly-Motors carbon/kevlar dupe of an old HSA style and the undertray is just stock Buell with the LP mounted directly to it.

typeone
08-28-2008, 12:57 PM
Hey Paul - Glad you dig the bike, thanks.

I don't really have much information on the mask fitting but to measure, trim, measure, trim while test fitting. The eyelets need to be enlarged by quite a bit of course, and a bunch of inner material needs to be removed, then you will need to work out a strap system.

I never made a template or anything so not much else to say :D its pretty straightforward, just modify the mask slowly so you dont cut away too much.

Polo
08-29-2008, 08:23 AM
You enlarged the eyes and cut the back straps with a cuter ??? do you remove the straw for drink ???

typeone
08-29-2008, 01:10 PM
i just sold the mask yesterday so i can't look at the interior but i cut away anything that was interfering with the light housing. just keep fitting and trimming, it will take some test fits to get it right. cut slow :D

i cut the eyelets larger (along with everything else) with an Xacto knife, dont cut the back straps until after you have the mask fitting properly. dont cut the clips to mount the straps either, unless you want to glue the mask to the housing.

i would have taken pics for you but the mask was boxed up and sent to BryD959.

Typeone,

I was wondering if your seat caused any rubbing on wire's and such after you put the tail spacers in. Reason I ask is I just put them on my bike. Anything I need to look at or watch??? BTW What did you put in place of the mask???

typeone
09-08-2008, 01:09 PM
BadS1 - the angled seat hasnt rubbed any new wires it didnt rub before :D

i think the only things to watch out for are... 1. that the rear latch is spaced properly so it latches/unlatches cleanly. cant remember exactly how long my spacers are for the latch but i didnt go by pM's directions (if you got the pMs) and 2. crushed nuts under heavy braking! hahaa

for the lights, im just running the stock SX grille guard. been planning another front end transition for winter. i want to either go R fairing or true clipons with a single headlight.

i just bought, powder coated and installed Crossroads clipons and dont like them :( even ran the cables through the S bikini fairing brackets for a super clean install. holy-waste-of-time. the seating position just isnt as good as my Rizoma clamped ProTaper fatbars but i need a little relief for my wrists on long-twisty days so some sort of clipons are in my future. looking to LSL next.

BadS1
09-08-2008, 07:01 PM
Thanks Typeone, I have the Trojan spacers. I have no shim/spacers on the seat latches but now that you said something I need to maybe put a washer in or something to make the seat latch a bit easier. I thought about doing the R fairing but it seems to be done enough. Thats why I went to LSL mig lights instead. Have you thought about those in Black for your bike ?? They'd look sweet. Not cheap though.

typeone
09-09-2008, 01:04 AM
no sweat. yeah, i was working on the bike today and looked at my latch spacers, i went with a washer or two and they work great. just a little helped a ton.

i have thought about the MIGs, but have a thing for single headlights. something shapely like a vintage Porsche headlight would rule. ive got a '66 in the garage. love what Goldammer did with Nortorious.

BadS1
09-09-2008, 02:50 AM
Sounds like a V-rod light would be up your alley ??? Blacked out with a Blue beam light in it.... cooooool!!!

typeone
09-09-2008, 03:29 AM
mulled over the VROD headlight too, its a popular streetfighter mod, but i think its too small for the XB. could also be the spindly mounts you see people make for that headlight. i want something tough but with a vintage feel. needs to mesh with the XBs great lines.

did you post pics of your bike with the new tail? if i missed 'em link me! [up]

I can't remember how to post pics here. If you remember I had Trojans Street Fighter tail section on. Right now it has the Buell Street Fighter seat. I have to modify that tail to work. Also some paint work is going to be needed after that. But It'll go back on. Its got my clown on it.LOL

Congratulations on your long running thread and of course your expertly modified bike. I was hoping to read some discussion of your Free Spirits pieces. Is this bike the first time you have used them? What was your motivation to add them? Any difficulties on the install? How much of a change did you notice? Thanks man

typeone
10-05-2008, 05:18 PM
thanks, blvdrider. the FS parts are top-notch and yes, this is the first bike ive used their parts on. as for motivation for each:

- pulley cover - purely aesthetics
- soft clutch - smoother clutch action, softer pull
- tensioner - looking to keep the belt healthy under strain

no difficulties with install on any of them, clutch still works nice and smooth and the belt looks basically new with ~16K on it

tf1175, picked the bars up from my local dirt bike shop. most stock them, if not, tons available online. and yes, they make a 7/8" version but I'm not sure if the finishes are the same. check out ProTapers site.

RyBuell, no sweat. yeah, i'm getting anxious for the next project too, just put a deposit on a SXV 5.5. gonna be a fun season to say the least!

It would be nice if someone decided to open a Streetfighter shop in the US and carried all these Eur parts that we seem to be in such demand for...

ProTaper Contour fatbar in the Carmichael bend, cut ~1" off each end, mounted with a Rizoma oversized clamp.

Typeone.. I went to the Rizoma site, I cant find a oversized clamp. am I not looking right? which one did you get or where...

Timeless, the clamp is in the Buell XB product section. here's a pic from their site

one more question. typeone. and/or everyone..

you said you order straight from the manufacture, how do you go about paying for it.. I know that some if not all of them said they accept paypal.. I would like to use that method, does it do the currency conversion right for you..? or do you have to look up exactly what you owe.. how does the paying thing work, or how did it go for you..?

typeone
02-16-2009, 12:31 PM
ive used PayPal and credit card direct to the vendor. for instance, with Hillbilly Motors in Germany, I talked directly to Jens. with pM-Performance, talked directly to Patrick in Switzerland and for Trojan-Horse directly to Matt in the UK.

i had a temp hookup in the states for Rizoma stuff so that was direct but not to Italy.

Most shops, if you can get in touch, will work with you via email/phone if they don't offer PayPal directly through their site.

for conversion, just use a conversion tool on the web to understand pricing before you begin the deal. i'm on a Mac and use the Currency Converter widget thats built in, it uses Yahoo! Finance connection.

after you know how the conversion is looking, PayPal will do it all for you, or the vendor/shop will do it for you and let you know the product price as well as post to the States.

hope this helps. i never had an issue except for the looooooooong waits :D

I totally agree with you timeless801! i just wish we had a few straight Buell dealerships in Southern California.I hate dealing with Harley, they don't have anything in stock let alone any nice aftermarket parts.I've ordered off Rizoma web site ,Sato Racing and Pazzo for parts and had no problems.Trojan Horse is a good site in the UK and speed of color has given me some ordering grief but most of the time are good.It just sucks all the trick parts are in Europe for an American made bike. Can someone answer that or do we just need to get our own custom parts web site?

Timeless801
02-16-2009, 08:12 PM
It would be nice :) real nice or even if we could get buell null (http://www.buellparts.net/) to carry them for us..

typeone
02-16-2009, 08:15 PM
i dont think it will ever happen, and if it does, everyone will still bitch about how expensive the parts are once in the US ;)

cool stuff ain't cheap!

Timeless801
02-16-2009, 08:18 PM
True.. AND.. it would dampen the Glory you have in the fact when people see your bike.. we know it wasn't easy overnite delivery..

Oh well Im going to get my parts one way or another.. :D

typeone
02-16-2009, 09:49 PM
i mainly mean that Buell itself is really a niche bike/company/product, to expect a large aftermarket presence state-side is a lot to ask.

not directing this at you in particular Timeless, just saying generally that a lot of Buell riders get pissed there isn't tons of cool stuff available right here in the USA but the fact is, US motorcyclists haven't grasped the Buell brand and product like some EU countries have which = way more trick stuff.

i always loved the hunt for uncommon stuff anyway, i think its half the fun! no glory needed here, i like what i like and do it for me.

:D

I know what you mean typeone and agree to a point.I want to search for that special part but it would be nice to have a custom shop here in the states.I pay the extra to order from far away places so It would be nice to buy stuff from the states, high prices or not.

- unfortunately, i dont remember what size S10 mask i used, just checked the receipt and its not listed there either
- i never had it contact the fender under hard breaking but i'm sure it could, looked pretty close. i didnt leave it on very long

My mask is a size 1 ,and it will make contact with the front fender if I hit something hard like a driveway or pothole. I also have the Ss so I have more suspension travel than most.

typeone,

first, I just wantb to thank u! U helped me make my decision on the purchase of my first bike! It was a toss up between a 2000 Duc M900 and a 2003 Buell XB9SL. Picking one up when I get back to Toronto, Canada! Just wondering, though........ I've searched everywhere for the gas mask and can't find it anyhwere! If you have easy access to one, do u think u can get one for me, custom fit it and I'll pay you for it. Let me know!

That's got to be the most bad ass XB I've ever seen!!!!!!

Steven has you hooked up with a link for more detail. i dont remember what size mask i used but as mentioned, it was a British Avon S10. picked it up from a military surplus dealer in the UK.

another Bueller bought my modded mask and the freekin USPS lost it. so lame.

good luck with your project. post pics!

help anyone!!! picked up my '03 XB9SL last wednesday. the guy i bought it from promised to provide the owner's manual with the bike but can't find it! called a buell dealership to see if they can order one for me. they're charging $99+taxes for a service manual. is this the same as the owner's manual? i really want one just so I can learn the in's and out's of the bike. This being my first, so it's really a big thing for me!

anyone know where i can get one? anyone kind enough to hand down their copy? even if i can just borrow it to photocopy! i'm desperate. i don't mind paying as long as it's cheaper than what the dealer's charging!

You can get both free. The Owner's manual is self-explanatory - The Service manual is in-depth with Disassembly/Assembly.

[Owner's Manual] Go to Buell.com / Register under the "Owners" tab and you can access them free.

[Service Manual] Click on the "Buell Service Manuals" link at the top of this page. There you'll find a Free Service Manual Download. (It's for Bolts, but they're close enough for what you'll need it for.)

tesal, that tail isn't available anymore, it was a Hillbilly-Motors carbon/kevlar dupe of the old HSA style. i think you're only option is to look at Speed-of-Color in Germany.

for tail lifts, check out pm-Performance in Switzerland or Frank-Parts in Germany.

Just curious as to how thick that tail lift spacer is. Wondering if i can fab something up myself and make my own spacer... is it just flat or does it have any angle to it?
