Hi everyone My name is Denise and I am new to this forum as well as Buell. I have recently picked up a used 2003 Buell blast and in the process of stripping it down and going over everything! I cant seem to find what Trans fluid/oil I need! I am trying to avoid going to Harley to buy anything. I usually go to Advanced or Auto Zone to get my oils and filters for my other bikes. I have heard that I need 90 wt oil for inside the primary cover but when I called Harley to ask they couldn't tell me anything! SO YOUR HELP WOULD BE AWESOME!! [confused]

The article below first says to use 75/90 tranny oil, but then at the very bottom it says not to do that and to "Use a good synthetic 20/50 motor oil and you'll be fine.". The procedure is also outlined quite nicely if you don't have a service manual handy.

Well based off of that I would just use the 20w50 as stated.

Ive been using 75/90 in the trans/primary and 20/50 v twin oil in the engine. If you use 75/90 it should have a friction modifier for use in wet clutches. The lucas 75/90 already has that in it and some others might as well. Just read the bottle. If it says safe for use with limited slip differentials then its okay. If it says do not use with limited slip or wet clutches then obviously dont use it. 20/50 is fine for both holes and what the manual calls for. I dont want to get into why i chose the gear oil over engine oil but there are lots of places to read about that. You can pick up mobil 20/50 v twin oil or valvoline synthetic 20/50 v twin oil in most auto part stores.

I know to use 20/50 for my engine oil but in the service manual it says to use SPORT-TRANS FLUID but what is that? is it normal 75/90 tran fluid?

I use Royal Purple in my tranny and Mobile 1 V-Twin in the engine. I love the combo.

Mobil 1 full synthetic in both the crankcase and transmission:
Warm Weather: 20w-50
Cold Weather 15w-40

End of story.

If you put 75/90 in your transmission, you're next post will be something along the lines of, "My Blast doesn't accelerate as quickly and maxes out at 60mph".

A Blast is not an XB...the flywheel is different, the clutch is different, the transmission is different.

Fact is the gear oils listed above for the primary have large sulfate additives, 10,000 miles or so - you will wonder why your stator is going bad. 20/50 or 15/50 synthetics.
EZ

Thanks for reminding me of that. I still like using a gear oil for transmissions as they are designed for that application. Most of the gear oils supplied use inactive sulfates now. I had purchased lucas originally when I was going to switch and found this white paper about it. I returned it for something else after reading this, im trying to remember which brand i chose but it was something from this test I had bookmarked. http://www.goodsenseoil.com/G2457-GearOilWhitePaper.pdf The copper is coated in the stator so im not terribly worried about it. The shift forks are brass or bronze though.
