From the EBR press packet

ORLANDO, Fla. – After months of speculation from motorcycle dealers, media and sportbike enthusiasts, Erik Buell Racing (EBR) today unveiled their latest sportbike, the EBR 1190RX, at the American International Motorcycle Exposition (AIMExpo) in Orlando.
While the new, street-legal high performance motorcycle is a direct descendant of EBR’s race-bred limited edition 1190RS Super Bike, the 1190RX features many new rider-focused features and has substantially raised the bar over competitive sportbike offerings. Most notably, the new motorcycle weighs-in at just 419 pounds, yet boasts 185 horsepower and 102 ft.-lbs. of torque from its ET-V2 1190 cc V-Twin engine. Few, if any, production motorcycles have ever produced this level of peak torque. The 1190RX’s wide torque band assures riders that ample power is available in every gear, and 21 traction control settings keep the power within the rider’s control in all road conditions. Aside from boasting the broadest torque band, the new engine delivers a combined highway/city fuel economy of over 40 mpg. Likewise, the hydrocarbons and nitrous oxide exhaust emissions produced by the 1190RX are less than 25% of those allowed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Carbon monoxide emissions are just 6% of the level allowed by U.S. federal regulations.
The breakthrough engine design and EBR’s racing-inspired handling features are coupled with all-new styling and scientifically-derived aerodynamics that rival the performance and drivability of any superbike produced by any manufacturer in the world. The multi-function digital instrument gauge cluster allows the rider to adjust performance parameters such as traction control, as well as to access numerous functions including track performance data, service intervals and system diagnostics.
Perhaps the most surprising announcement during the unveiling and accompanying press conference, however, is the 1190RX’s price: The new model is being offered with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just $18,995.
The EBR 1190RX is completely assembled at EBR’s facility in East Troy, Wis., combining EBR’s in-house engineering and manufacturing capabilities with specialized components from world-class suppliers around the globe. Full-scale production is scheduled to begin in December, 2013.

Interesting to compare the different specs of the RX (with the RS):
- $19k (vs $40)
- 420 lbs (vs 390)
- 185 hp (vs 175)
- 102 ft-lb (vs 97)
- 13.4 compression (vs 13.6)
- Showa (vs Ohlins)
- Alum wheels (vs Magnesium)

Seems it's cheaper to make 10 more hp than shed 30 lbs! I wonder how much of the price differential is due to mass-production versus down-graded specs?

It's also interesting that EBR has moved to a 22deg rake on these bikes as opposed to the 21degs used on our XBs & 1125s.

I think the price point is within range for what the bike is. BMW has a completely different economy of scale vs EBR, even with Hero. Also I would say that the electronics on the EBR are pretty advanced for their first street bike. Also keep in mind where and how they are built. 40k for the RS? Hard to justify unless you are a collector. 19 for an RX? I'd sooner buy an RX than the Duc or BMW.

Well now that the "suspense" is over for the RX, I'll be awaiting the AX debut. I have a 2009 Uly XT and is my favorite bike owned to date. (going back to the 60's lol) I'm fairly sure the Ax will be a bit too "high" tech for my tastes. I do my own service and repair, so like the new cars, bikes are getting too complex and expensive. I think Erik really had something with the Uly series. It's a shame that it wasn't marketed properly. ( in a motorcycle shop instead of a boutique) Well hopefully the AX will take some cues from the old Uly and be a success.

lotusexcelle
10-16-2013, 06:47 PM
I'm looking for the AX as well. I have an 08 XT and can't imagine ever getting rid of it. I'm hoping the AX has some of the Uly features. I'd like to see belt or shaft drive, standard cases, heated grips, power ports, excellent seat, etc. I could see the AX also gaining some advanced suspension pieces, too. I'd *really* like to see an AXT, though.

Why two completely different bikes. S1000RR is an inline and Buell is a V-twin. I'd like to see a ride comparison of it and the other V-twin or V-4 competitors like the Panigale and the Aprilia.

I never get why people want to compare V-twins with inline bikes when they are completely different characters. Lets compare the SV650 with the GSXR-600. Not even the same animals. It's like comparing a house cat with a monkey. But a RX and Panigale comparison is like a house cat to a tiger. At least they are in the feline category.

I'm a big fan of Erik's work, and I appreciate that this is going to be a fairly competitive bike from an American company, but this looks like just another boring liter bike to me. Since I'm not a racer, and only a guy with a chunk of money to spend on motorcycles from time to time, there's nothing about this model that makes me want it over a BMW, KTM, or Ducati. Too bad.

Why two completely different bikes.Â*
You're right to identify the obvious difference in engine between the Beemer & EBR, but they are designed to compete in the same arena (Erik even once said "we want to be BMW") and for me the similarity lays in the fact that superbikes are new territory for both manufacturers and they both came out of the gate remarkably strong.
Besides, we've all read those comparo articles where it's ALL I-4s or V-twins; pretty boring stuff to read IMO.

Any idea When will they unveil it?

Update on the top speed, 186 is the maximum top speed for production bikes in Europe and that's why it's the max top speed here. The EBR rep even said it with a grin on his face. Good indication that it will go much faster.
It also has a 2.8 second 0-60 time.

Too bad.

I have to agree with theocto.

I met a lot of people already in the network. They actually offered to deliver the RX weeks ago saying they just couldn't sell it till after today.

I posted a clip from ebr's website of them running it on the dyno. Sounds great to me. Check it out here. http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/EBR-Motorcycles/1190RX-Sound-Clip

I am with some of the others on this....I am not in love with this machine. Performance, I am sure will be amazing but I just don't like the looks as much as others in this price range. Maybe the other models will sing to me.

However, I must say congrats to Erik and EBR. It is very impressive what he has been able to accomplish in such a short period of time....though it has felt like an eternity.

I was thinking the same thing Vance. I would really like the CF one off the RS if possible. I would love to adapt the front wheel to my 1125R as well.

The brake scoops are available for purchase right now. You'd need the axle mount as well. Geoff was saying it was something like 70% braking improvement. He also said that he can out brake any bike at the track.

I don't think the photos really do it justice. I haven't seen it in person but the videos of it give a much better view - including that cool headlight. As far as the secondary muffler... keep in mind the noise requirements. I can't remember which thread I made this comment in but I'll make it here again - the secondary looks amusingly easy to remove. My XT with the Hawk muffler should indicate the first mod I'd make to the RX. I can't imagine what it sounds like with some "less quiet" pipes.

I'm really interested in that radiator setup as well. To cool that much output down... seems like they would need more fins and rows that it appears to have. The transfer tube being so close to the exhaust also has me worried for the long-term life of that hose. I can see some aftermarket opportunities there (ala the braided steel 1125 mods).

Also I think most of us were expecting an 1125R type of look. This isn't it. The bodywork looks VERY much like it was a wind tunnel design rather than a "lets make it look hip for 2014". In that regard... yes it is kind of ugly. But so are all Buells. I mean that in the nicest way. My Ulysses looks like it wants to punch you, kick you, make your ears bleed, then take you out for ice cream. In other words the RX looks more like it was built to rule track days and races rather than the parking lot.

The lucky people that own one won't be staring it in the garage, though. I bet the view from the seat is *gorgeous*.

It looks like it'd be really easy to remove, but after seeing this slide from EBR's presentation (posted at www.ebrforum.com), I suspect you wouldn't want to; it appears to be an integral part of the exhaust design. I'll bet that exhaust system plays a HUGE part in that broad, flat torque curve this engine demonstrates, and removing that can might royally hose that up.

^^Yea that looks different from the R, CR, and even RS muffler design. It blew my mind when I saw 185hp and 102 torque. Maybe the muffler design played an integral part in that? And this CSI (Controlled Swirl Induction) system? It looks important, but I don't know much about it.

No frame sliders? Someone can mount their own, But It'd be cool to have something like the frame pucks on the xbs...And for me, They seem to offer more wind protection(But at the cost of aerodynamics? lol)

I would cut out a piece of high quality mesh and fill it in, this way it would still flow air. Maybe paint a Pegasus logo on it too. Or paint the mesh to match the color of the bike.

Just the ugly exhaust, and the ugly front brake cooling duct(I know it's functional, but looks like an afterthought. Couldn't they have tied it in with the fender somehow or something to make it look nice).

I love this bike!!! I'm happy to see a super bike made here in the states. I know buell's are know for their naked street fighter look, but ebr has stepped up their game and wants to compete with the super bikes of the world. It looks like that is exactly what they have done!!! I hope this is just the beginning of the American super bike!!!
