Has anybody out there tried to do this themselves? I saw a guy recently who made a custom setup himself out of a couple of glasspacks, probably saved him a bunch of cash too.

I have a design for a modified stock muffler but the way the outlet is hooked up it points at the back wheel, not off to the side like most (think of a drummer with a wider and shorter oval tip pointing back). would that design affect the back tire temp/traction at all with the exhaust gas hitting the tire about 4-5 inches away. a few people I have talked to said that wouldn't be a problem but maybe somone here would give me a different side.

would not do it if i was you [smirk]

ofcourse it will affect the temp & traction...there's reason why all exhaust point away from the tire.

It can be done! Although I didnt do it myself. I had a guy build me a pipe. Had to make a modifications to it but once I get it back. Im gonna ceramic coat the thing and put it on. I needed my bike louder then the pipes out there!!! Now she's showing her harley roots!! Ill get some stuff posted once i get it done should be in 2-3 weeks!

Who did it? And how are you going to do the ceramic? I look forward to seeing your pics. It would be great if you could let us hear the sound as well. Thanks.

A guy I work with has a small powder coating business and is going to do it for me. I do have a pic of it on the bike but its far from finished but it would give an idea. I dont know how to post pics but I can email them to someone if they wouldnt mind posting them for me.

on top, just below the adds, you can see 'your photos'
there you can browse the pics on your pc & upload them.

in the post you can choose 'add your photo' and then just click on the pic you want to add.

i tried uploading mine in the pics section but my file was too big! So im not sure how to resize it. Ill get smaller pics when I get the pipes back. Or I can email them if anyone wants to see them.

Down load the infanvew program. It will resize your pictures to any size. I've been using it for a while now, it gets the job done. http://www.irfanview.com/

Wow. Looks cool, but almost like a straight pipe. I want louder, but I bet that thing maybe just a bit too loud. How much did they charge you to build it?

mrdozer2you
08-28-2007, 07:16 PM
is it packed or just straight through? Looks sweet [up] If i were you I would send the pipe and header out to be coated together, that would finish it nicely.

mnbuellman
08-29-2007, 02:30 AM
About $250 in it. Its straight through there is some baffles inside not packing though. I talked with a buell dealer told him what I was doing and he said you'll want some back pressure which the baffles provide. Id love to have them coated the same but dropping the engine to get to the header bolts just seems like to much work right now. I wanted a sport bike but yet showcase some of its harley roots! I think Ive achieved that.

I'd love to hear them. Just how loud are they?
If you ever record them, I would love to hear.

Ok. That is really cool too. Can you share how you did that? Tell us about the power, sound, etc too. Thanks for sharing!

I've tried a couple of designs now and have not had much success yet. With the two designs I tried they revolved around using the stock can (on my XB9) and a Car Chemestry insert. CC said their inserts reduce noise and cause no back pressure. Both were incorrect. The caused large amounts of back pressure and sounded just as load as open pipes. I now have an XB12S and am getting ready for another try.

What I have planned will again use the stock can and retain the valve in the muffler. My idea is to reduce back pressure as much as possible without changing the tuned length of either paths. It will end up being a twin outlet design and should be somewhat louder than stock without being obnoxious. I will take pics and post up whatever I do if it works out.

I know with the 12's you can get a servo emulator to replace that valve. Anyone back me up on that?

It works, idle sounds great--got anything with a bit of revving? How does this one ride--midrange good, top end strong?

mnbuellman
09-12-2007, 03:29 AM
yeah sorry about that i just didnt have time to let her warm up and rev it up a bit. I realized that after I postd it. And I still have to get it coated too. Hopefully I can get it sometime this week. She seems to have a good midrange. Ive only cruised around town to about 55mph. Havent got to the interstate yet and spread her wings a lil.

an intersting note is in one of my old Battle2Win magazines they did many exhaust tests. One where just for kicks they threw on a cherry bomb glass pack pipe from the auto store and the bike lost power.

badbandit12
12-23-2007, 04:59 PM
yes exhaust isn't like everyone thinks , you can just throw big pipes on the motor and think your doon. you have to figure the tourqe curve and power you want. and then start from there. If I ever get my xb12s done I will post pics.

I did the gutting of the muffler like LeFox has up.
The power band was kind of weak up to 3500 and then it will rip you off the bike.
I went back to the stock muff after my engine started running hotter.
The computer needs remaping for this to work right.

buell007
01-17-2008, 01:52 AM
i did the gut as well i will post a vid on sat. the bike did ping in the summer but with the race ecm no pinging. the same power band below 3500 not much but above 4000 it was very strong

i gutted the stock pipe on my 07xb12r yesterday. didnt take long (less than 3 hours from me driving up, until i drove off). sounds really good. i rode about 140 miles today in the hill country and i cant tell too much of a difference. the torque below 2500 is where it was affected but it is minimal. the sound is great though. the stock exhaust on our bikes reminded me of a scooter, it just took everything good out of the sound. i removed the three pipes out of the can, left in the servo(disconnected), and i welded in a half moon towards the back, on the side of the exhaust outlet. CUSTOM HACKPIPE. anyway i bought a stock can to send to kevin but never had the funds so if anyone wants a custom hackpipe, i'll cut it up for you and send it on its way.

Just don’t want it locking up on me and some parts are becoming rare...still too much fluid!?! Used a qrt
