View Full Version : Uly crap

Had the Uly at HD to tune up and run diagnostics to check everything is still OK.

Got a report back with:
1) Surging around 2500 rpm (which has been there from the beginning)
2) TPS readings jump between 4,2-5,0% at idle (is this normal?)
3) Motor sounds noisy (this I laughed off, as it is a Buell, but upon listening it does sound noisier than usual at idle when the clutch lever is released - in neutral).

Now this morning into work the CEL comes on while riding in drizzly weather.

I know it has probably been shared before, but where on the Uly can I check the error codes.

I need to get her sorted as she is my daily driver again and need her to be super reliable on a 50km round trip every day.

Thanx!

#1-this is normal with stock uly mapping
#2-yes
#3-check primary chain cold freeplay
uly diagnostics plug under seat. it is the gray plug with black rubber cap on it. if you have ecmspy and cable plug into that diagnostics plug and run diagnostics check. if not you can use simple jumper wire and check for codes. that procedure has been posted a bazzillion times on here.

Thanx fringe!

I really struggle with the search function on this forum - never get what I am looking for.

Going to have to look at it tonight when I get home. Don't have ECMspy or cable, so will have to jump it.

Tried in vain to jump the pins without success.

Went to HD this morning, they quickly checked and thank Heaven it turned out to be a sidestand low error.
So either a faulty switch or wire or something.

Will check primary chain over the weekend when I get a gap.

Ordered the required parts to make my ECM cable off ebay (as nobody in South Africa seems to stock the stuff).

Comes to about US$26 incl postage.

Gonna (try) make my own cable. :D

Had bike at HD yesterday to trace the fault.

After full diagnostic test on all systems it points to side stand switch assembly being toast.
All other systems 100%.

New part on the way and should be here in about 2 weeks time.

Best part, they are not charging me for diagnostic test - only part and installation (which should be about 1/2 hour).

wally: that's fine diagnostics and money well spent as a faulty sidestand switch can leave you stranded and it's always at the most inopportune time.

Yip!

Now a new bug has crept in... Horn has pinched wire in neck area. [mad]
Works when steering is straight or clocked to right, but not to left, so will have to trace it this weekend.

I really struggle with the search function on this forum - never get what I am looking for.

Search function is useless on this site. To search for something type it in google and include site:buellxb.com at the end and it will yield only results from the buellxb domain.

What will be the best (and easiest) way to get into the loom to check for the pinched wire.

Really don't feel like dropping the motor again... ;)

I realised (again) this morning, that even with all the quirks, the breaks, etc it is still a majorly fun and satisfying bike to ride! :D

Now just waiting for cable from China and for US$14 I have an ECM cable!
:D

Then I have to figure out how ECM Spy works...

Heard loads of popping from the exhaust this morning, sputtering and not wanting to go over 3500-4000 RPM.

Also noticed a bit of stumbling when taking off.

First thing I thought is "Crap, O2 sensor mount broke off again on rear header..."
Pulled over, seat off, all in tact, buuuutttt...turns out the O2 sensor has come slightly undone. :p

Phew! Relief!

Fixing it up tonight. [up]

Becoming rear suspension removal expert!

Off, O2 sensor refitted and back together in about an hour. :D

Got the cable on Friday and assembled my cable:

Now, some grace and patience please...

I read somewhere how to test if the cable works, but for the life of me can't fine the link...
Also, what version of Ecmspy do I need for my 08 Uly?
Do I need a driver vir the USB cable?

So many questions... [confused]:D

Thanx!

Found fix for the horn and was pretty silly...

Finally plucked up courage to take front apart.
Then saw this little wire hanging lose and not grounded.

Striped it back a little, earthed it, prayed I am not shorting the whole system out and turned ignition on.

No sparks which was good!

Pressed horn and magic!

Getting some connectors tomorrow and brighter bulbs (seeing as light cluster is apart). :)
