William, I can't tell you exactly what you need to know. But I did find a site with Free Service Manual downloads which includes one for a '97 Lightning S1. It should help you out.

Free Motorcycle Manuals (http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp)

I set the idle for my 98 s3 with a dynojet thunderslide and jet kit at about 1100rpm, If I remember correctly I have the 43 slow jet installed. Ihave the race air cleaner, and the CF v&H SSR2 slip-on. and I just had mine pass last week.
I hope that helps

Good luck on the test, Mine initially failed a couple weeks ago.
It was close on the hc's last year, so I leaned it just a bit. then it failed miserably. took her home, let her cool off, went to pull the plugs, and they were loose. along with the connector ends, why don't they just put a regular connector on those, don't answer it is rhetorical. I can never get those little Bas!ard5 tight enough to stop loosening. Anyway she passed on the second test, another year without having to use the Waiver. :D
Well have to hook-up and ride sometime, their are some other valley buellers over on that side of town.
Welcome, Good luck and ride safe.
