I've been working on this for awhile now and just got it all mounted and wired up. Pretty happy with it. Light is an led from Radiantz.

That's pretty slick. I like it. Few questions:
1. Is the light battery powered?
2. How did you attached it to the swing arm? Belt guard has to be removed in order to mount it?
3. Are you plan to make few more and sell them?
4. Is it street legal?

SHAWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!

Price please, and you must absolutely make one for me now...

Thank you

Wait, I have an 09, I don't think this would fit...

;)

EVLXB

1. Is the light battery powered? no, the wire runs thru the tubes and up the inside of the swingarm

2. How did you attached it to the swing arm? Belt guard has to be removed in order to mount it? I replaced the 2 bolts for the brace with longer ones and and used nyloc nuts to mount the bracket.

3. Are you plan to make few more and sell them? not sure yet. Lots of fabrication not sure anyone would buy them for the time I got into it

4. Is it street legal? Hell no

5. Fit an '09? Not sure, I'd have to and look at the '09's or I could trade you for my '03 and you wouldn't have to worry about it. ;)

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the compliments. Yeah I hear FL and Cali are pretty strict. I know this local police officer (bitter rod)... I think the MI cops are way cooler than the other states cops ;)

I am thinking about making a few, I just need to come up with a reasonable cost for it. I'll let you guys know what I come up with. I will probably make another and see how much time I have into it.

I did sand the edge off the pulley as LeFox suggested.

sand it and rub it in with a bit of oil.
dirt comes off easy and no need to keep polishing or sanding it.
just oil it in with a rag every time you wash your bike. ;)

Hey Bitter Rod!
Is this bracket illegal because it bends the license plate or because it is sideways? Cuz I know all my dads choppers have his license plates sideways and he has never gotten problems for it.

I saw some of the new V-rods up at a harley shop in NH and they have side license plate mounts....not sure if this is for all new v-rods or just NH. I really love that plate mount and want one bad but I have no idea if it is legal in MA! I figure if harley has them on their stock bikes in NH then its legal there but I don't know about MA....anybody know? or where to check?

If used right, this site is really helpful. Just use the "bar links" at the top of the page to navigate, the rest is advertisements. DMV.org (http://www.dmv.org/)

It's how I found out it's illegal to Lane-split in KY. [mad]

onelogue
04-17-2009, 02:39 PM
ok thanks Stevenc150. I looked at MA's and it seems to only say that the license plate has to be visible. I live in OR so the laws are probably the same. The only plate problems people have seem to have is when they hide the plate way back under the fender.

Stevenc150
04-17-2009, 04:22 PM
It'd be bad to get a ticket over something like you're plate not being mounted correctly. Here's Oregon just in case: DMV - OR (http://www.dmv.org/or-oregon/motorcycles.php)

Bitter rod are you a bay city officer or a state officer?

Sorry, just saw this post. I am a Bay City officer. As for the plate bracket...in MI it is illegal because it is vertical. Having said that, I had to look it up. Which tells you that I have never stopped, or written anyone for it in my career. What could happen, if you were to be stopped, is a simple "fix-it" ticket. Meaning there would be no fine if you corrected the issue. Then once you get the ticket dismissed, you could put it back and try again.

Awsome mount. Is it made out of steel or aluminum. I have some stuff here that I could try to do one out of aluminum. I made one similar this for my Wide Glide, but it was Aluinum and I polishied it. Of course on these bikes, the polished would look out of place unless there was some more on the bike else where.

the sub-frame of the R is made of Steel, but all the swingarms are aluminum as noted by One.

Jornum1
06-11-2009, 02:13 PM
The subframe on the R is aluminum. I know that for a fact. I had new upper mounts welded on mine when I put it on my Ss.
Steel would be way heavier with that much material.

EVLXB
08-13-2009, 04:17 PM
Hey guys - I know it has been awhile... I had to take a step back from the project. I had mine on the bike for months and it broke off the other day. I was riding and it bounced around between the wheel and swing arm. If it would have gotten into the wheel... bad things. So I am re-evaluating the design. Mine is steel and pretty heavy - I believe the welds fatigued and broke due to the vibrations and the long moment arm. I may add a rubber isolator to elliminate the vibrations.

Samniam - I would keep an eye on your welds. The risk for reward is a concerm.

EVLXB
08-13-2009, 04:24 PM
Oh and sorry I left so many folks hanging on this project. The failure was completley unexpected and very serious. I am glad no one had this on their bike when it failed.

Jornum1
08-13-2009, 05:15 PM
wow glad to see your ok, thats what matters.

Ever thought of drilling and taping the rod(solid I assume). Then bolting it to the plate mount and mounting bracket flush?
Even if you did it after welding as a safety feature.

onelogue
08-13-2009, 05:41 PM
Dang Evlbx, sorry to hear about the unfortunate mishap. Hope the bike is ok!![sad]

That is why Chris did his the way I have shown below and have the other thread about. No welds no worry on the breakage. Just use lock washers as supplied and you should be all set. Plus it is only $20.

EVLXB
08-14-2009, 05:12 PM
Sam - I took a second look at your design and I think you will be better off. I ground off alot of the weld where the bracket mounts to the swing arm and I think I went too far. It looks like yours has much more fillet to it. Mine was flush to the tubes. I am in the process of building a new prototype for myself - I may 'borrow' your idea on the bracket. I would still like to incorporate some sort of rubber isolator though. I'm using hollow tubing to save on weight... is yours solid or hollow.
